dnel··on Bitwarden Was Down
I see no reason to move away from my synching/keepass setup, it's worked reliably for years and I expect it will continue to do so regardless of what happens with these services. It's nice they exist for less technical users but it's not for me.
dnel··on DVD shop owner vows to be ‘last man standing’
During lockdown I ripped my entire DVD collection using makemkv. It's as close to one click as you'll get and works brilliantly. All my DVDs are stored away now and I play them from Plex in full quality.
dnel··on Switched Back to Windows After over 10 Years on Linux
What a time to switch to Windows. It seems like walking into a burning building. My views softened on Windows after years of exclusive Linux use but after getting Windows 11 on a laptop I can't not see the end of the road and want to switch everything back away again. Linux has several solid distros that "just work" in my view but Windows 11 does not meet that criteria.
dnel··on Ask HN: Do you backup your Emails?
I have about 11 years archived as annual maildir tarballs. I archive using thunderbird and export them when I remember to. I don't know why I bother, I almost never need anything from them.
dnel··on Vintage digicams aren't just a fad. They're an artistic statement
I saw a Youtube video recently that looked like it was filmed using a late 90's webcam. The presenter looked too young to have owned it from new so I assumed it was a lo-fi aesthetic choice but having suffered those cameras at the time the appeal of them eludes me.
dnel··on The million-dollar mystery of milk.com
since they can't have their brand's ampersand in a domain it seems better than the alternative: bandq, which isn't correct either.
dnel··on I have 2000 old VHS tapes in my garage and don't know what to do with them
oh my that video promoting Gary Glitter going on Live and Kicking made me feel very uncomfortable
dnel··on Unexpected Consequences of McDonald's Touchscreen Kiosks
Very optimistic piece describing the gradual automation of McDonalds, soon they won't need as many humans.
dnel··on Steam Families Is Here
I remember in the early days the idea of not having physical copies and trusting Steam to continue to provide access to your content was quite a hard pill to swallow for a lot of people. It's somewhat ironic that while they paved the way, they have kept a good reputation while others that followed have abused this trust.
dnel··on What's your favorite RSS feed reader?
I didn't get on with miniflux so I've been using Feeder for Android the past year or so and really like it. I also use Newsboat on desktop which is great but gets used less as I tend to consume feeds on mobile it seems.
dnel··on Co-defendants in HP fraud trial pass away just days apart
It makes no sense, you hire a high end hitman who will make it look like a natural disaster and he goes and does both jobs before the weekend. Is there ball game on?
dnel··on It's Not Just You. No One Wants Kids Anymore [video]
It's an oversimplification to say it is just about the cost of living, but its an easy to understand reduction of the problem that is far more complex and what I'm saying is that the consequences of high housing prices/rents and a lack of financial stability in our boom and bust economy is delaying parenthood, and this leads towards the failure of the familial support network that is critical to raising children.
dnel··on It's Not Just You. No One Wants Kids Anymore [video]
Have two kids, I always wanted a family around me and I love having them but I don't blame people for making other choices, it is very hard.

We were 34 when we had our firstborn, 38 for 2nd, waiting to be financially stable enough, be on the housing ladder etc, but now one of my wife's parents is elderly, the other is dead, one of mine is still working due to delayed state pension age, and the other is raising step grand-kids. Siblings emmigrated and live thousands of miles away so we're on our own in a country that does very little to help parents with astronomical childcare costs, some of the most expensive in Europe.

It's a system set up to prevent the next generation from existing, while at the same time the country that is literally rioting against the immigration needed to plug the gap. Sure, call it the "far right" but the sentiments are muttered by many more moderate voices.

I knew then what I know now, I'm not sure I'd make the same choice.

dnel··on I Quit Spotify
When I left Spotify I remember it being difficult at first, I went around to various competitors who were all objectively worse. I've been using YT music for a few years now too and while it is not as good by a long shot, it's good enough and I feel more in control of my musical journey. You're right that they don't change much, it almost feels like a forgotten product, which probably doesn't bode well for its future with Google being Google.
dnel··on You are probably sitting down for too long
It's the same in the King's English
dnel··on Ask HN: Those who run mainly Linux and game on Windows, what's your setup like?
I have a dedicated Windows 10 gaming PC hooked up to my TV which I either use directly or stream from using steam-link.
dnel··on WD Releases New 6TB 2.5-Inch External Hard Drives – First Upgrade in Seven Years
True, and this one has the luxury of living in a data centre kept at a constant 27C and never being moved or knocked over. As far as USB hard drives go, this one is living its best life.
dnel··on WD Releases New 6TB 2.5-Inch External Hard Drives – First Upgrade in Seven Years
I assumed that but then I've been torturing a usb WD 14TB drive for years with 24/7 writes backing up a busy logging server and it hasn't missed a beat. I guess it's just the luck of the draw?
dnel··on Podman Desktop 1.10: 1M downloads and counting
I'm one of those million as I installed it last week and I've been impressed with it and podman as a whole.

Just today I piped a cross-platform image from my M2 Mac running podman to an amd64 Linux server running Docker today and it just worked. So far it's been a viable alternative to begging for a Docker license.

dnel··on The children who remember their past lives
My mother often talked about children she'd witnessed talking about their past lives. She believed it but I'm sceptical. Then my son started saying things like "when I was a girl" which seemed to confirm it and my mother thought so until I told her he also talked about "when I was James the red Engine" and it became clear this was him recounting stories from books but in the first person.

He quickly grew out of it as his language developed further and I believe similar cases are just young kids being unable to express their ideas accurately.

dnel··on Boaty McBoatface
It makes gritters great fun to spot. We have Basil Salty cover our area. Never seen John Cleese driving though, that would be extra points
dnel··on New UK record for wind power set today – 21.81 GW between 0900-0930 GMT
the storms only ever pass on bin day, I'm seeing the pattern
dnel··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
It depends how you use it, if you dont need to synchronise the database between machines (much) then KeePass is likely the easiest solution and works very well, beyond that Vaultwarden makes it easy to maintain a single centralised database accessed from multiple systems
dnel··on Threema – Secure and Private Messenger
The cost in itself isn't a barrier, but it compounds hidden network effects making it a problem.

I paid for Threema this month while looking for WA alternatives. I had to pay the money just to find out that absolutely nobody in my contacts uses Threema.

Was it a waste of money? Maybe, but I'm ok with being the first, most people would not be ok with that and I have a very real concern I'll never see a friend join me there, then it would be money wasted.

WhatsApp charged its users to continue using it after a year, I wish Threema took this approach. I paid that money without issue because I already saw the value, so did a lot of people I know. So it's clearly not that people won't pay, but they need to show their customers it's worth it first.

dnel··on Ask HN: How secure is Protonmail really?
I've considered using it but saying nothing of the quality of the service itself, I saw it as a bit of a surveillance goldmine for anyone with an interest in monitoring people that use secure email, and you have to trust them absolutely, which is impossible for me so their selling point is rendered moot.
dnel··on Ending support for Dropbox syncing to drives with certain uncommon file systems
I sync to my NAS where it gets backed up to b2 using duply, cloud backup is out of scope for Syncthing itself.
dnel··on Show HN: A map that shows you how far you can go for a given time or distance
yeah, it says I can commute in half an hour, but unfortunately it's 45 minutes on a good day at best. A little too optimistic for me.
dnel··on IP addresses and routing
Either they really don't understand IPv6 or they are creating a false scarecity to charge you more money for what is essentially a free and virtually infinite resource to them, probably both.
dnel··on British cave diver considering legal action after 'pedo' attack by Elon Musk
I doubt any amount of damages he'd get would even slightly sting Musk, the worst Musk will get is the bad press about this but that's already happening. At least the guy might get some legal cleasing from the stain Musk put on him and a bit of cash in compensation. I hope he follows through because throwing about accusations like that is not on and kids, and some grown-ups, who look up to a man like Musk need to see that he has boundaries of acceptable conduct and he's stepped over them this time.
dnel··on Ask HN: How did your passion for computer stuff start?
My uncle was the computer guy of the family. I remember playing on his Amstrad 1640 when I was very young. I always wanted a home computer desperately but my dad never had an interest or saw it useful to encourage my passion for it. It wasn't until my uncle eventually upgraded from his 8086/640KB Amstrad to a Pentium 60 then he gave me the old Amstrad and I was hooked. This was probably about 96/97 so this was already vintage hardware and my attempts to run anything contemporary was frustrating, but that didn't stop me trying to squeeze out every drop of performance from the old beast. I had it for many years and eventually my experiments in trying to get more out of it broke it and it went to the tip. I could probably have repaired it easily just a few years later but I guess that's the tragedy of youth. I'm tempted to buy another 1640 to remember those days but I know it would never be the same.
