dkobia··on Why do countries welcome some refugees and shut others out?
Terrible things happen during conflicts that deserve consideration and a myopic focus. Is it wrong to highlight racism, or rape or the abuse of children? The most vulnerable are at risk and deserve attention now more than ever.
dkobia··on Why Apple’s new M1 chips are essential for rapid iOS development
Writing integration tests on the M1 is now fun instead of tedious and painful!
dkobia··on Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route
Very cool. Just confused as to how the Starlink kit itself will be distributed in a war zone in order to consume said service?
dkobia··on Invasion could drive 5M Ukrainians to flee abroad – U.N
He’s a very complicated figure and I think it’s best to view everything he says through the lens of someone desperately trying to get home. It is understandably self-serving.
dkobia··on Google lowered its salaries in North Carolina. Now workers are protesting
Is it unreasonable to think that the market will pay what the market will bear? Surely you can’t expect that the ability to work from anywhere wouldn’t come at a price? Ultimately people will vote with their feet, get replaced by what is now a much greater talent pool and this cycle will continue until an equilibrium is found. I suspect that the sad outcome will be the rise again of places like San Francisco and Seattle.
dkobia··on Ask HN: Which open source versions of SaaS products would you like to see?
Any SaaS product that uses a rent seeking marketplace to compensate for missing essential product features. Think Atlassian, Shopify, QuickBooks etc.

I was very happy to discover Medusa (https://www.medusajs.com) on HN recently, a pretty solid Shopify alternative.

dkobia··on Peloton replaces CEO and lays off 2,800 people
Peloton has pretty expensive products and induces the same reaction folks had to iPhones before other companies released similarly priced flagships. Generally I think it's easy to hate on these products if you don't have one. I was pretty skeptical myself. "Was", because my partner picked up the Peloton Bike and subsequently the Peloton Tread.

Like some other comments here, the almost cultish following is quite fascinating to witness in person. Would I get one myself -- probably not, but there's something to be said about the intensely passionate users Peloton has. This passion comes not from the hardware itself but from the trainers who've become celebrities themselves.

dkobia··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
Second this. I was highly skeptical of the watch until I received it as a gift for Christmas. It has made me more acutely aware of how sedentary I’ve been during a typical work day. Closing the rings is now an obsession and I’m better for it.
dkobia··on Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after falling out over Joe Rogan
One thing is clear. Spotify should probably have stuck with music. The special relationship with JRE blurs the lines between publisher and platform and their fates might end up being inextricably tied together for better or worse.
dkobia··on The Rise of A.I. Fighter Pilots
I am reminded of the very awesome book Kill Decision by Daniel Suarez -- A fictional account of a future with A.I. fighter pilots with permission to kill.
dkobia··on U.S. Justice Department forming unit to counter domestic terrorism
5 people died as a result.
dkobia··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked – Part II
So many of these restauranteur articles. One thing is certain -- it is not the governments job to fix this. This is the market playing out in a pandemic. Restaurants are non-essential and faced with this level of distress should perhaps consider shutting down and coming back when the market can support them. Unless one has deep pockets or the will power, I'm not sure how many can survive.

With the thin margins, most can't afford to pay more and many customers aren't either regardless of how much they want to eat out. I love restaurants and it has been sad to see some of my favorite ones shut down -- hopefully they'll be back!

dkobia··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2021?
The Original Remote Developer episode was an absolute gem too. https://corecursive.com/remote-developer/
dkobia··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing in computing / programming?
The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in cars is so simple ubiquitous and invaluable. No reason we can’t put more non privacy invasive or rent seeking iot devices out there.
dkobia··on Launch HN: FlutterFlow (YC W21) – Build Apps Visually
Absolutely fantastic. I’m a big Flutter fan and I figured it was just a matter of time before someone conjured this up. Well done lads.
dkobia··on About 2 months ago I went to review a product I bought from Amazon
The reviews are compromised. The review analyzers (FakeSpot, ReviewMeta etc) get progressively unreliable and hence compromised. Review sites like the Wire Cutter that were wonderful places to read great long form reviews of products are unfortunately compromised as well.

With so much money in play, the platform will pretend to care as most customers purchase more to replace bad products rather than seeking recourse against sellers. All this I suppose is what keeps big box stores alive.

dkobia··on Learn Django Web Framework
All great options. Really boils down to which language will give you the most mileage for what you’re trying to achieve as a developer - Python, Ruby or PHP. Better yet if you have the time, give them all a spin and let the philosophies that influence each frameworks design drive your decision.
dkobia··on Why U.S. Infrastructure Costs So Much
Don’t agree with Elon Musk on many things but this one hit home:

"…it does not make sense to take the job of capital allocation away from people with a demonstrated great skill in capital allocation and give it to an entity that has demonstrated very poor skill in capital allocation"

dkobia··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Dyson vacuum products are pretty damn impressive. I have an 9 year old Dyson DC33 and every time I take it apart to clean it, I can’t believe how thoughtful the engineers were. Repairability is 9/10 and built like a tank.
dkobia··on Facebook can pursue malware lawsuit against Israel's NSO Group -US appeals court
It seems to me that this is the sort of thing that is sorted out between governments first - diplomatically. I am certain the lines between the NSO Group and the Israeli govt are pretty blurry considering they came out of the Israeli Intelligence Corps. If it weren’t an ally this would almost certainly be considered nation state actor activity eg Internet Research Agency.
dkobia··on The reMarkable as a notebook and eBook reader
I really really wanted one of these for note taking. I settled on an iPad Pro + Apple pen + Notes App which have been remarkably (no pun intended) good. The fact that I can then consume the notes I wrote on my computer or phone and use search as well with no extra effort required has been invaluable.
dkobia··on Why health-care workers are quitting in droves
Hospital mergers and acquisitions have gone up significantly in the last decade and to make up for the increased debt load, the hospital systems are pushing practitioners to see more patients per day. Quantity of patients has increased, while quality went in the other direction.

My wife (who quit earlier this year) had to spend significantly more time completing patient charts "after work" because there was no time to actually do this at work with the push to see more patients.

Combine frustrated practitioners and frustrated patients and everyone's pissed off -- then throw in a pandemic.

dkobia··on Hollywood’s biggest stars are losing their clout
The last line summarizes it all - “…In the new Hollywood, stars are neither made nor born: they are algorithmically generated”
dkobia··on You Shouldn’t Use GraphQL
GraphQL has many benefits especially around speed of development but flexibility comes at a price too. Security hardly seems to come up in these discussions but should probably be front and center. GraphQL presents challenges around controlling access to sensitive data especially in complex datasets where query flaws rear their heads. DDos’ing yourself is also common. Then throw in inconsistent authorization checks, managing rate limits and introspection.
dkobia··on Ask HN: What are some of the best well-written books on computer science?
Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software by the Gang of Four.
dkobia··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal documents?
Shameless plug but relevant. Our startup addresses just this issue - https://www.trustworthy.com

Beyond just managing personal documents, there’s always the question of access to these documents by loved ones or other trusted people.

dkobia··on Spiders are much smarter than you think
One of my favorite books and highly recommend.
dkobia··on Ask HN: Is the ISO 27001 certification worth it?
I would definitely recommend ISO 27001 or SOC2 which is the equivalent in the US, but with a few caveats. Having gone through the process myself I can without a doubt say it elevates your security posture by introducing an almost uncomfortable amount of rigor in your processes and procedures. The caveat here is that it is an intense process - weeks or months to prepare for and the security procedures you put in place are especially heavy for a smaller company. Maintaining these certifications takes a lot of work too and you would almost need to hire a security officer to keep up with it.
dkobia··on Forget Twitter Threads; Write a Blog Post Instead
Thank you for this. I love many blogs, but as you know many blogs out there are trees falling in the forest with no one around to hear them. Great coherent (and interesting) thoughts are just hard to consolidate in the blogging form factor. Getting a following is even harder and in todays world linking to blog posts is less likely to get readership. That said, I have no qualms with twitter threads as a medium for disseminating knowledge. It works in the public square for better or worse.
dkobia··on MacBook Pros, an “M1X” chip, and other stuff to expect at Apple’s October event
I unfortunately (or fortunately) had to get an eGPU to drive the two monitors. Settled on the Razer Core X + Radeon RX GPU as there was no stable way to drive the two LG monitors.
