ddejohn··on Software Development Has Too Much Software in It
OP, are you the author? If so there are a few typos I'd like to help you fix.

Regarding the article, I'm a little bit shocked that unit testing is part of the conversation at all. Firstly, I would consider unit testing to be an intrinsic part of software development, not a separate process with separate tooling that got tacked on as an additional task (like, for instance, needing to learn how to use Kubernetes).

There's a lot to complain about in the industry regarding tooling complexity, but the author doesn't actually get into it at all. The only thing they seem to go into detail about is how unit testing makes writing code more difficult / slow, and a paragraph on React.

And then there's this 'graph -- and while relatable, it has nothing to do with the general thesis:

> A big gripe I have with how software developers are often expected to operate is that they are often told what the requirements for the software are by a BA or some other liaison between them and the business [...]

Yes, this is an incredibly frustrating part of software development, but again, it doesn't have anything to do with tooling and all the software surrounding actually writing code, which is what the article seems to have been about originally.

ddejohn··on Pixel 9a: The latest A-series phone with Google AI smarts at an unbeatable value
As long as people continue to use their phones in lieu of a PC, they'll continue buying larger and larger phones :(

I hate it and I feel like there's a not-insignificant market of people that want to go back to small phones.

The Moto X (2013) was, in my opinion, the perfect smart phone. The curve of the back and the rubberized texture were so comfortable in the hand. Never once dropped it.

I drop my Pixel all the time because it's so light and thin and slippery. Drives me crazy.

What do LLMs have to do with package and project management?

To me it just sounds like popping down to the pub for a couple pints. I love the idea.

Thank you!
ddejohn··on Revolt: Open-Source Alternative to Discord
Hard disagree. I'm sick and tired of web apps. Please give me more desktop applications not based on electron.

The link when you mention Mikefive's post only goes to the subreddit, not a specific post. Searching for "Mikefive" on reddit yielded a lot of results. I'd love to see the specific post you were referring to.

Beautiful keyboard.

ddejohn··on Firefly ‘Blue Ghost’ lunar lander touches down on the moon
I did something similar with their lunar libration videos captures by the LRO [1], using the frames from the video with the Windows desktop background 'slideshow' functionality (desktop background changes once a minute).

ddejohn··on Python as a second language empathy (2018)
Python's standard library is phenomenal.
ddejohn··on What would happen if we didn't use TCP or UDP?
There have been a few of these types of discussions on HN -- search phrases like "internet from scratch" -- really fun reading.
ddejohn··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
You have constructed a representation of me in your head that in no way reflects reality. Good luck in life.
ddejohn··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
This is the silliest thing I've ever heard
ddejohn··on Bitwarden Authenticator
FWIW this is not exclusive to Bitwarden. 1password also suffers from this frustrating UX.
ddejohn··on I ditched my Pi-hole but still block ads with NextDNS
Thanks a bunch. I have actually used unifi routers in the past and didn't always have a great experience with them, but it's been a while and I feel like I might be ready to try again. Will also look into gl.inet, thanks!
ddejohn··on I ditched my Pi-hole but still block ads with NextDNS
I'm one of those users -- I set up a pihole as my DHCP server to get ad blocking on all devices on my network a few years ago and haven't really thought about it since. Raspberry Pi was familiar enough. Networking in general is mostly Greek to me, so it wasn't the easiest thing to do, but it's pretty much been set-and-forget since the initial setup (aside from updating pihole itself and the web interface every few months).

I've seen AdGuard recommended a lot recently but from what I can tell this doesn't do the same thing as a DHCP pihole.

Something I'd love to do some day is replace my consumer router with something open source and run an all-in-one solution (ad blocking for all devices on network, DoH, as well as just a generally competent home router for a small apartment). Do you have any recommendations for where to start if I were to go down this road?

ddejohn··on When imperfect systems are good: Bluesky's lossy timelines
This is such a lazy, uninformed take that people just love to repeat. 1) the left on Bluesky is full of in-fighting because neolib left are convinced that Harris lost because of racism/sexism and the progressive left spend a lot of their time trying to educate (and dunk on) them for their braindead takes, and 2) any social media platform will become an echo chamber if you only choose to follow people that echo your sentiments. As long as Bluesky isn't actively censoring and suspending journalists and other public figures, there is no equivalence to Truthsocial or X and only a clown/shill/psyop would suggest as much.

It's really not that hard to find enriching content from all walks of life on Bluesky -- if somebody can't find it, they just suck at the internet.

To be clear, I do have grievances with Bluesky, and I do not have high hopes for its future -- but that's because I personally believe that social media in general is both fatally flawed from the start and detrimental to society, and will never not devolve into ad-riddled or otherwise enshittified services. I am not a Bluesky shill, I'm just here to call out the silly false equivalence with Truthsocial, etc.

ddejohn··on I tasted Honda’s spicy rodent-repelling tape and I will do it again (2021)
This is one of those times where "I bet you're fun at parties" is a perfectly justified response to the (G?)GP [1]. This story is funny, well-written, succinct. Liz would be a hit at parties. GP would not be invited again.

[1] do we prepend great- when referring to parent comments more than two levels (GP) up? Or do we just say GP and rely on context?

ddejohn··on I tasted Honda’s spicy rodent-repelling tape and I will do it again (2021)
I, for one, appreciate having a little whimsy in my life, as a treat.

ddejohn··on Show HN: Meelo, self-hosted music server for collectors and music maniacs
> For example, the duplicate finder can't distinguish between the same track that appears on two different albums, e.g. the album it debuted on and a "Greatest Hits" release.

Honest question, why would you want to? What's wrong with having the same song on two different albums in your collection?

I was curious too. GP's github is in their profile and it looks like this is what they were talking about:

ddejohn··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
Nope, it was a Linux project.
ddejohn··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
Their point is about battery life, and that a thicker phone is the compromise they're willing to make. They don't want a thicker phone just for the heck of it.
ddejohn··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
I can't remember what the project was called, but many years ago I remember seeing a concept for a Linux phone that also doubled as your desktop when plugged into a hub.

ddejohn··on A century later, a taped message solves the mystery of a WWI doughboy's death
There is a lot of really phenomenal metal based around WWI for anybody else interested. Bands like 1914 (sings exclusively about WWI, from Ukraine) and Warbringer (a couple of songs specifically about WWI) come to mind.
ddejohn··on California votes 'no' on measure to ban forced prison labor
Apparently there's a fine line between slavery and "not having a good time"...
ddejohn··on 'Islands' of regularity discovered in the famously chaotic three-body problem
I may be mistaken but I seem to recall having also read on numerous occasions that ejection of one of the bodies is an inevitability in these types of systems.

Given the limited state space of the simulation, I'm not sure I see what the big discovery is here.

It's certainly a neat result to see it visualized though.

ddejohn··on Conway's Gradient of Life
Really cool to see. Was curious about the author's other work and was very annoyed that the blog does not link to the author's other posts, either with a "next/previous" link, an archive, or a homepage where a list of posts can be viewed. The only way to see other posts is to subscribe to the RSS. I can't imagine there being a good reason for having such a bad UX.
