dcassett··on Lynx Browser: The Land That Time Revived (2022)
Linux user here.

I use links in graphical mode (links -g) quite a bit. It's easy to turn image display on and off with the '*' key. Image sizes can be scaled with the menu and they take effect immediately. If one hovers over an image link and types "i", the image itself is displayed, and there's an option to scale the image to fit the window. Getting a new links window is easy (Alt-F n). One gripe is that hitting Ctrl-C will close the window (the 'Q' key does this already)

I use lynx as a second line of defense when some sites refuse to work with links, because lynx is sometimes able to display them (different user agent?). I also have been recently using lynx within xterm (disabling the alternate screen) for forums where posted URLs are not clickable (text only) in combination with xterm's dabbrev-expand() function to quickly copy such URLs in lynx's goto prompt. As an aside: in xterm's misc.c there's a a macro (IS_WORD_CONSTITUENT) that can be easily expanded to exclude characters that are not part of a URL, such as braces.

I do worry that more and more websites will simply show "Suspicious Activity Detected" for these browsers. As mentioned so many times on HN, text browser users are a minority and text browsers are obsolete. I did once send a message to a website owner and later saw that I could access the site, but didn't get an acknowledgement by email, so I can't be sure if it was in response to my request. There still are some websites that degrade gracefully, and, despite complaints by the server, allow text input windows and submit buttons to still work.

dcassett··on Tritone Substitutions
A tritone interval by itself (only 2 notes sounding) sounds quite dissonant to me.

But in the context of the dominant 7th chord, the only note dissonant with the bass is the 7th. The tritone itself is not so prominent since it occurs between two non-bass notes.

The drawing looks like a circle of half steps, not a circle of fifths.

It seems that the article would be clearer if the 180 degree rotation were to put F# at the top of the drawing.

Probably "several of"
dcassett··on Researchers find signs of intelligence among jumping spiders
Can confirm. I cornered one in a windowsill as a child and was bitten.
dcassett··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
I read Kissinger The Adventures of Super-Kraut [1] when it came out in 1972. It was a fun read at the time.

>Missing semicolon.

If you add a semicolon then FRED is no longer a single command variable (it persists)

> on NetBSD, one can do this

Linux also does the expected thing:

$ FRED=barney printenv FRED

barney

dcassett··on I’ll never be an astronaut
From the title I expected a humorous reference to the "Potential" gag poster (https://despair.com/products/potential), probably because the chances of anyone becoming an astronaut are very slim.
dcassett··on Ask HN: Anyone from CISA on Here?
Maybe "Connect with CISA" towards the bottom of the page?
dcassett··on Tell HN: I used the same computer since 2007 (with minor upgrades)
I have a Macbook Pro early 2008 running Debian Bullseye. It took a bit of research to be able to boot from a legacy partition (grub-pc plays a role after installing in EFI mode). Also, thanks to a boot parameter setting (init_on_alloc=0) the suspend to RAM is finally working with the Nouveau driver. The battery has lost its capacity as you would expect. It works pretty well as a web kiosk, running Musescore, screen capture, etc.
dcassett··on W3M Rocks
I really like using the links browser [0] because it is very fast, renders images (if you want), and colors are easily customizable.

Edit: Using it in graphical mode

dcassett··on Grep flags – the good stuff
I looked for an option to specify a filelist (like ctags -L file) but didn't seem to find one. I'm assuming others are happy with using xargs or `cat file`, but it would seem like a useful feature.
dcassett··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
> Figured bass only tells what intervals make up the chord

Those intervals are relative to the bass. A six-four has a sixth and fourth above the bass (i.e., a second inversion).

dcassett··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
> Why is it called an octave when it has 7 named notes?

I think it's because of 1-based numbering. Two identical pitches are called a "unison".

dcassett··on Pelosi and a lifetime of trading
The political climate has piqued my interest in the workings of the US government. I appreciate helpful HN commenters that provide information that I don't have time to research.
dcassett··on How I Write Code, Track Time and Tasks, Take Notes, and Stay Organized in Emacs
That's an impressive amount of work you put into documenting your workflows. I started reading this morning and returned in the evening expecting some useful comments, but no joy. I see there is another emacs article on the front page so perhaps it was simply bad luck with the timing of the submittal.

dcassett··on Why use old computers and operating systems?
I have an old Win2K box with a P3-450 with a SB-Live! soundcard which has some nice environmental effects such as reverb that I use for recording. I haven't used it much in the past few years because I need to clone the two drives, which are close to 20 years old. Rebuilding the system from scratch would be a nightmare.
dcassett··on Why use old computers and operating systems?
I'm using an early 2008 MBP with Debian Buster with 6GB of RAM and SSD. The nvidia-340 driver is still supported so Youtube works nicely. With mbpfan it does not overheat. Touchpad and suspend are working pretty well. The Amazon website with Firefox is where I get warnings about a script taking too long.
dcassett··on Migrate Everything from Linux to BSD
I recently moved my home systems from Ubuntu to Debian because Ubuntu dropped 32-bit support (I have a mix of 64 and 32-bit and wanted to keep them on the same OS). The installer didn't work on my oldest laptop from 2003 with a new mSATA SSD IDE adapter (it hung when formatting the SSD). In the process of debugging the problem I tried FreeBSD for the first time, which not only installed successfully but even supported the wireless adapter. I'm running LXDE as I'm doing with the other machines. The learning curve was far less than I expected, so hats off to the FreeBSD project!
dcassett··on Ask HN: Hacker News comment tree indentation on text-based web browsers?

It's also possible for the distance correction to change as one ages. In my case I have gone from -2 to +1.75 for distance in a span of 20 years.
dcassett··on An Open Letter to the Communications of the ACM
I used the links2 browser (doesn't support JS) and was prompted to download the PDF, which is perfectly readable. Perhaps there is an issue of conversion of the PDF to google docs.
dcassett··on Biomarker of Alzheimer's found to be regulated by sleep cycles
To add to this, I found something that seems to help when getting to bed - focusing on the visual artifacts that are there with the eyes closed and wondering what's there. Often I will soon not remember anything else, and other times I will be aware that the mind's eye has started creating vivid and detailed imagery, followed by not remembering anything beyond that.

It's interesting, though, that when a website hits the front page of HN it often gets the attention of the owners.

dcassett··on Show HN: Refining the Linux Tablet Experience – Debian on Surface Go 2 with LTE
Very well-written and illustrated article. I wish the Surface Go 2 had a shorter space bar so that the right alt key was under the comma key, and an extra control key under the period key.
