chejazi··on Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video]
Exciting product. Criticism: the detachable controllers don't appear very ergonomic. They are small in size and the detaching mechanism look looks somewhat flimsy.
chejazi··on Wikileaks: Julian Assange's internet access 'cut'
The only explanation is that the revelations are recent. We won't know until (if) it's released.
chejazi··on It’s easier and cheaper to use bank wires than Bitcoin
> $85 + $95 +$55 +$0.55 +$0.45 (still in WB21) = $236 in fees

Bitcoin has been around for 8 years, and general awareness has really only kicked in over the last 4. These Bitcoin companies are the first generation. I think it's reasonable that in the next 10 years the tasks you performed will be more seamlessly orchestrated, and greater competition will drive the price down. It would take an order-of-magnitude improvement to undercut the wire fee ($35) which may well happen.

chejazi··on What I Wish I Had Known Before Scaling Uber [video]
While a lot of people go out on Friday and Saturday night, I don't think the total volume surpasses commute volume. The surge in pricing you experience late at night is largely due to the number of drivers on the road, which would be less given the time of day.

Edited out consideration: traffic in your area might be a good proxy for Uber volume. Traffic late at night is generally low.

chejazi··on Ask HN: What's your favorite HN post?
cperciva and dhouston were working on similar stuff at this time, they cross paths in the comments of the same thread:

chejazi··on Facebook recommended that a psychiatrist’s patients friend each other
> What Lisa (and anyone else with a professional responsibility to protect client privacy) need to do is to stop associating the phone number they give to clients with Facebook or other social media.

Understanding how Facebook connects different people might help prevent this from happening, but as Facebook's tech becomes more advanced/pervasive Facebook will need to provide an explicit feature to protect user privacy for situations like this. As it stands, the implications of sharing your phone number, location, etc are already far from explicit.

chejazi··on Warned of a Crash, Startups in Silicon Valley Narrow Their Focus
If a platform like Equidate (https://equidateinc.com/) allowed shorting that would be king.
chejazi··on Scammed By A Silicon Valley Startup
Crunchbase company profile, as determined from the comments on HN: https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/1for-one
chejazi··on Startups that launched at Y Combinator S16 Demo Day 2
After skimming both techcrunch articles, it seems like there were more hardware startups on day 1.
chejazi··on Understanding VCs
> If you are at a board meeting and a VC says “you should do less email marketing and more content marketing”, would you go see your VP Marketing after the meeting and tell them to cut email and double down on content? I sure hope not. I hope you would treat that VC comment as a single data point, to be heard, but most likely not acted on unless you get a lot of similar feedback.

This is good general advice. The credibility of a person, VC or otherwise, does not suffice as proper consideration, let alone multiple data points.

chejazi··on Building Soundcloud's iOS App; in-depth retrospective
I don't have any experience using the old app, but I previously used Soundcloud's web product. The main purpose was to listen to music made by more esoteric artists. For more mainstream stuff, I turned to YouTube. Obviously this setup was suited poorly for mobile.

Now I use the Soundcloud and Spotify apps for roughly the same respective purposes (Spotify replacing YouTube). I prefer the simplicity of the Soundcloud app over the feature-rich but complex Spotify app. There's plenty of data not displayed in the Soundcloud app that might be shown in the Spotify app, but good luck becoming consistent at finding that data.

Overall I'm happy they cleaned up the app and dropped the old webapp features.

chejazi··on Ask HN: How important is launch day for an MVP?
I think every product owner has anxieties about what features will/will not be deemed worthwhile. This is why the "BETA" tag is so ubiquitous. The only way to really know is to have the crowds decide, so just go for it!

Edit: "launching" multiple times is totally a thing, too, so don't fear getting the product/market fit wrong the first time.

chejazi··on A Denver Suburb Experiments with Free Lyft Rides to Light Rail
This makes a LOT of sense for the elderly. My grandmother occasionally schedules a pickup from her home in the suburbs, and the system is very lacking. First off, it's based on scheduling a time far in advance. Second, there's no way to get real time updates. Third, the van/bus that picks her up is often EMPTY!

I see a lot of people trying to map the functionality of this onto their non-retired lifestyles, but I think that's missing the point. This will mostly benefit seniors.

chejazi··on YC Office Hours in 11 Countries This Fall
Work culture around the world varies wildly. Always interesting to see Founders break through to success despite the differences in culture.
chejazi··on News Feed FYI: Further Reducing Clickbait in Feed
Most people don't consciously think "News Feed is full of clickbait"; instead they value the overall experience less, e.g. "I find News Feed less entertaining/worthwhile than BuzzFeed". They aren't aware of the curation going on under the hood, and soliciting feedback is considered more disruptive than anything.
chejazi··on BitFinex down due to Bitcoin security breach - 120k BTC stolen
It only works because the other party (Bitfinex exchange) is centralized and therefore can be held accountable to pay the miners. Reorganizing the blockchain is not possible (aka economically incentivized) in almost all other circumstances. chejazi··on Show HN: Web Design in 4 minutes

chejazi··on Why I’m Suing the US Government
This reminds me of a new patent Apple filed to disable video recording on iphones. Would winning this suit prevent that from being enforceable?
chejazi··on Ethereum hard fork successful with mining majority
Fair enough. For clarity:

The proof of work threshold for a block (aka the difficulty) was the same when the fork started. The function that adjusts the difficulty (a function of time-between-blocks) is the same across both forks. It would take considerable time for the non-fork chain's difficulty to adjust to where it can make blocks at pace with the fork chain again. And even if it did, the fork would represent less work due to a lower difficulty.

chejazi··on Ethereum hard fork successful with mining majority
The longest chain always wins. Block height tells you which chain is longer. Am I missing something?
chejazi··on Ethereum hard fork successful with mining majority
What's happening: the block number of the hard fork is much bigger than the block number of the non-fork. This means that most of the mining power is being devoted to the hard fork chain since it is longer. The non-fork can't keep up, so the fork is considered a success.
chejazi··on Twitter now lets anyone request a verified account
Twitter desperately needs this. There are far too many garbage (spam/bot) accounts on their service. I think this will help people filter out such noise a lot easier - looking forward to it!
chejazi··on Vine isn’t growing and most of its top executives have left
The part that has impressed me about Twitter/Vine/etc over the past few years is their content embeds in other sites/services. Their main apps are so riddled with junk that I hardly use them. The real estate in their feeds devotes more to ad space than micro-blogging, and everyone knows that followers (/follow-for-followers) are a marketing cesspool.

Twitter et al. should really become the blockquote service for the internet.

chejazi··on Vine isn’t growing and most of its top executives have left
> For marketing and PR purposes I'm sure my unused accounts are being monetized and proudly being counted as a "user", which is a whole nother problem.

They usually apply basic criteria such as monthly active users (MAUs) here when promoting such stats. Your account likely wouldn't meet the criteria. In the case of bots, being "active" can be programmatically achieved, however.

chejazi··on Why is the Iranian government opening the world’s biggest bookstore?
...to fabricate the illusion of intellectual freedom.
chejazi··on Show HN: A Fortran web framework

chejazi··on Miso (YC S16) offers high quality on-demand home cleaning in South Korea
I didn't say "raised", and a prevailing trend for a successful startups is to raise lots of capital.
chejazi··on Miso (YC S16) offers high quality on-demand home cleaning in South Korea
Do you see the evolution of iRobot-esque autonomous cleaners as a threat to your business? Are you planning on pulling an uber with all the capital you raise and pursuing R&D of said devices?
chejazi··on This is the most demonically clever computer security attack I've seen in years
I wouldn't say physical access is as clever, though.
chejazi··on Snapchat raised $1.8B in a Series F round
It can't hurt that the aforementioned companies, however unprofitable, don't need to spend as much on ops.
