ccallebs··on Ultra-processed foods and the corporate capture of nutrition
> Its not like "processing" makes something more or less poisonous.

At scale, processing food often introduces challenges only solvable by introducing chemicals and practices that are considered harmful to humans.

Phthalates become more common in foods the more times it changes hands. Sterilized environments necessary for processing must be sanitized by using chlorine, some of which is exposed to the food itself. Most processed foods have ingredients that are also processed, so the effects of this are compounded. Many preservatives, past and present, have positive correlations with various types of cancer and neurological diseases.

I agree with base premise — you don't automatically start eating healthily by choosing whole foods. But I think it's harmful to consider processing as benign.

ccallebs··on Let's make them pay for using our personal data
Imagine that an entity knows your worst fears, deepest desires, biggest perversions, most sensitive insecurities, the people you love, the people you hate, the things you covet.

Now let's pretend that they know how to use this information to change your opinion. And not just your opinion, but the opinion of however many people fit their targeted persuasion campaign. Then understand that the moment the data is sold to another group, they have the same power. The new group might want to do things more sinister than sell you designer jeans.

Finally, realize that the information will last longer than you will. It'll probably be your legacy.

ccallebs··on Two L.A. universities quarantine hundreds students and staff in measles outbreak
I don't disagree with you and I trust you to make the distinction between the two things. However, I don't trust lawmakers/police/military to have the same sense of nuance.
ccallebs··on Two L.A. universities quarantine hundreds students and staff in measles outbreak
I appreciate your desire to solve the problem, and I'm certainly pro-vaccination. However, I really don't want to set another precedent of allowing the state to permanently detain people because of perceived public danger (real or otherwise).

Imagine if this kind of thinking prevailed in the HIV hysteria of the 80's/90's. It's relatively easy to follow this approach to its logical conclusion. When you order authoritarianism, it's very likely you'll get it. And not simply in the places you want it.

ccallebs··on Show HN: KetoHunt.com – A curated list of keto-friendly products
If a product is on Amazon and listed as keto, it would probably meet the curation standards I set. I look primarily at the macro-nutrients to decide whether to include it in my collection.

However, there are a great number of keto friendly products that aren't listed as such on Amazon. I'm pulling those into my feed and determining whether they meet qualifications as well (an obvious example would be beef jerky -- it's typically not marketed as keto friendly but much of it has the correct macronutrients).

I appreciate the feedback though! I certainly see your point of view regarding the appearance of spam. I'll put effort into making the experience better. And you're right -- I need to include products that might not be listed on Amazon.

Thanks!

ccallebs··on Show HN: KetoHunt.com – A curated list of keto-friendly products
That's a great idea! I'll make a note to do that.
ccallebs··on Show HN: KetoHunt.com – A curated list of keto-friendly products
That's correct -- I hand curated the products and entered their nutrition info. The actual application is the product funnel / data entry side. My goal is to create a curated, searchable list of keto-friendly products.
ccallebs··on Show HN: KetoHunt.com – A curated list of keto-friendly products
Hey! Creator here. KetoHunt is a simple web app I built a while back while searching for foods I could eat on my ketogenic diet. It's nothing special, just a simple Rails app and a mailing list.

I try to add a few products per day and may build additional features if the interest is there. Thanks for checking it out. :D

ccallebs··on Need More Self-Control? Try a Simple Ritual
Not OP, but the respect comes from the idea that the food exists and you're able to eat it. We are extraordinarily lucky (or as religious folks might say, blessed) to live in a time where being ambivalent about dinner-time is an option.
ccallebs··on [dead]
These are perhaps the best laid out articles I've ever seen (example: https://quicksilver.primer.ai/Adrian_J._Luckman/). Not only is the typography stunning, but there's no friction between the reader and the information.
ccallebs··on Jack White bans phones at gigs for “100% human experience”
> It's interesting they didn't have confidence in the babysitter's ability to take care of you for an evening but still chose to hire them and then monitored them via payphone.

No one questioned the babysitter's competence. They're your children -- you're going to want to call and check to see how things are going.

ccallebs··on Ask HN: How to make fewer mistakes?
Not sure what you mean by "really senior", but I've been professionally programming for the last 8 years and it still happens to me. The embarrassment has lessened and it's less frequent, but it does happen.
ccallebs··on The Oversimplification of Results and Hard Work
The article makes an extraordinarily valuable point: It's never going to be only about hard work. But as an outside observer I also look at what she's done and think "This is such a good example of perseverance and grit."

As Seneca supposedly said, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity". Sometimes opportunity is shy and you have to look a lot longer than you'd prefer. But I fully believe that if someone keeps at it, they can find their luck.

ccallebs··on World's richest 500 see their wealth increase by $1T this year
Some people are more influential than others. Money is only one vector of influence. He's rhetorically asking whether we should regulate the other vectors with hope that no one person has more influence than anyone else.
ccallebs··on A Dark Room: From Sabbatical Year to $800k
FWIW, I don't feel like Clicker Heroes handles micro-transactions in a scummy way. It's not pay to win/play because it's literally impossible to win and you offer an alternate way to obtain the in-game currency (rubies, I think?).
ccallebs··on Charging for our product originally hurt but ultimately saved our startup
I'm debating the merits of this right now. For the moment, I'm not charging for my beta. I have received some good feedback so far, but people haven't been as active using it as I would like.

I'm wondering whether it would be better to find a smaller number of people willing to pay for the product and really tailor the experience to them.

ccallebs··on CockroachDB 1.0
First, this is awesome! Congrats to the team for reaching this milestone.

Secondly, I think the name is memorable and conveys exactly what it should. If I were ever on an engineering team that chose not to use CockroachDB due to being "grossed out" by the name, I wouldn't be on that engineering team for long. Perhaps someone can explain the knee-jerk reaction to it for me.

ccallebs··on When sexual selection can lead to a decline in the capacity for survival
> The most important thing to understand about evolution is that natural selection can only work with the existing traits of an organism, the current environment in which the organism exists, and what random changes happen.

I believe most of the time you're right, the changes are random. However, at least one experiment has shown that species can pass adaptive traits to their offspring (called Lamarckian inheritance) [1]. The experiment is intriguing, in that it seems to hint something more is going on than the Darwinian inheritance model.

ccallebs··on Show HN: F.I.S.H. – Mashup of data sources to help explore state of Washington
Nice work! I thought I had a pretty good handle on the local beer in Kentucky, but apparently I've missed a few. Any chance you'd build an API around this?
ccallebs··on We Need a New Deal to Address the Economic Risks of Automation
> Um, yes?

That's easy to say with no resource scarcity.

ccallebs··on Uber to Suspend Autonomous Tests After Arizona Accident
There are ~260 million automobiles on the road in America. There are a statistically insignificant number of self-driving automobiles. I _suspect_ that self-driving vehicles are going to reduce traffic accidents when deployed en masse. However, at the moment it's comparing apples and oranges.
ccallebs··on Build a Vue.js Website in 4 Steps
You're right -- this is astro-turfing. No content specifically about Vue.js. I propose changing the title to something like "Deploying a Cosmic JS Website in 4 Steps".
ccallebs··on Lessons learned as a React contractor
Is there a resource you can recommend to get your head around all the basics?
ccallebs··on Ask HN: Have you done / plan to do any basic “prepping” (tinned food etc)
Correct, and we're not planning on storing them for a decade. We have the year they were acquired on each paper bag of them. Old ones will get removed, new ones will take their place.
ccallebs··on Ask HN: Have you done / plan to do any basic “prepping” (tinned food etc)
It's very sensible to prep for small or extended periods of supply-chain breakdown. My wife and I have taken the following precautions:

- We have a few LifeStraw personal water filters [1]. These things are awesome -- one of them filters up to 1,000 liters of drinking water. Very reasonable price too ($20, you can get them for cheaper occasionally on sites like woot). I'd argue these are the most important items we own.

- We have an abundance of canned goods. This isn't primarily meant for "prepping", but we always buy more canned goods than we need when we find them on sale.

- This won't apply to everyone, but we have a large amount of heirloom seeds we've collected over the past few years. We have ~9.5 acres of land, so if things were to ever get rough (and plants still grew) we'd be able to get food that way.

ccallebs··on Myron Ebell Takes On the E.P.A.
I'm from KY. According to NPR yesterday, McConnell himself has said that the easing of regulations and executive coal alignment is unlikely to create many coal jobs. Not sure if that was political posturing or not.

The "clean coal" that Trump has pushed for costs way too much money to create, transport, and responsibly store the solid carbon. Coal already has a price advantage when compared to natural gas.

However, I agree with you that the voters in Appalachia generally vote against their own interests. Usually for social reasons.

ccallebs··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]

That should absolutely still be on the books. You'd have people cleaning fish in bathrooms.

ccallebs··on Radeon R9 M370X (MacBook Pro 2015) vs. Radeon Pro 460 (MacBook Pro 2016)
I agree. With vim, running the current spec file for me is <LEADER> c. <LEADER> l for the last spec file ran. I don't even have to think about it.
ccallebs··on Poor kids who do things right don't do better than rich kids who do things wrong
Honestly, I think this explains quite a bit. I grew up fairly poor (single income household in Appalachia). I had to train myself out of a lot of speech patterns / mannerisms that don't fly in other parts of America.

It's unfortunate, but the stereotype of inbred white trash is still alive and strong when most people hear Appalachian drawls. They hear the way we talk and immediately think we're ignorant. It's an openly-mocked culture.

ccallebs··on The real Soylent sickness
> Research has shown we get most of the nutrients we need from our first meal (of whole foods) each day.

Not disagreeing but this is the first I've heard of this. Do you have any sources on hand?
