braderhart··on Venture investors blast US decision to withdraw from Paris Climate Accord
So it is likely to be infiltrated with marketing disguised as news & comments. Lots of agendas. Not sure it is as relevant as you think.
braderhart··on GM accused of installing devices in diesel trucks to beat emissions tests
Nothing. I decided to wait and saved the money.

I was on the verge of buying at VW when this happened to them. I will never buy a VW now. Pretty soon I'll have to stick to bikes if companies are allowed to get away with anything. Surprised that they haven't arrested everyone involved, considering that the people from VW fled the country.

I've moved to Arch. They can have Debian too.

It's 2017. Pope converted to Islam and Trump got elected. Didn't you hear?

2017 forecast... Microsoft acquires Canonical.
braderhart··on Facebook says it will act against 'information operations' using false accounts
I'd much rather have my account verified & tied to some data, than have 5+ fake friend requests per day where people that used to use FB for scams, said that FB would give them free ad credits. They never stopped them from adding people to groups or mass messaging them using bots.
braderhart··on Facebook says it will act against 'information operations' using false accounts
Half of the ones that I report which are obviously fake, are allowed to stay up. Pretty sure Facebook employees have a working agreement with certain scam operations.
braderhart··on Decentralization is about diversity
I can help create a very lightweight container image for this if you want?
braderhart··on Judge wipes out patent troll’s $625M verdict against Apple
What proof?
braderhart··on Intel Launches 4k-enabled Quad Core NUC
Yes. Thunderbolt 3 supports 40Gbps and should allow for an external GTX 1070 or 1080. The cheapest Thunderbolt 2 PCIe chassis on Amazon is around $200, and I don't see why we can't have a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis at this price point.
braderhart··on Intel Launches 4k-enabled Quad Core NUC
This has Thunderbolt 3 with 40Gbps output, so once the external chassis start coming out you can use an external GTX 1080 with this.
braderhart··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
You are so right and yet downvoted of course. I think this goes to show the way Microsoft runs its business. Keep the world 10 years behind because people are gullible enough to keep using it. They would have been better off spending the money to buy Canonical.
braderhart··on .NET framework ported to NetBSD
How can you compare a kernel application vs a process isolation layer? Containers will be adopted to dynamically load kernel modules and then we'll have dynamic "rump" kernels, but saying to forget Docker and the future is Unikernels, doesn't make a lot of sense technically.
braderhart··on My path to OpenAI
I'm more interested to think about what happens when these structured systems become autonomous from unstructured data.
braderhart··on Show HN: Passbolt – open-source password manager for teams
That's what I'm suggesting though. I'd love to see a Qt/QML application that is like KeePass, but has built in support for external databases for users/groups.
braderhart··on GNU LibreJS
I think what it comes down to more than anything is equality. What happens when someone discovers a breakthrough to reverse aging or to improve cognitive functioning? Should that information be public, or only accessible to the rich?

Now take the same analogy to computing. How many people have access to entire data centers to run algorithms for machine learning and AI? Doing your own computing is the opposite of that. Instead of sharing your information, it's saying we should build software and applications that run locally and that are open source so that we can audit the code. It's sad that the norm is everything in the cloud these days without any concern for privacy.

braderhart··on Show HN: Passbolt – open-source password manager for teams
Why would I use this vs something like KeePass/KeeFox? I was hoping to see a new cross-platform Qt/QML password manager with Firefox and Chrome integration plugins.
braderhart··on The ShapeShift Hack
It seemed to me like Rovion is Bob, but just taking on a different identity, hence the "Let me know when you plan to arrest Bob" comment.
braderhart··on VW 'Dieselgate' software developed at Audi in 1999: report
I haven't paid much attention to pricing lately, but they pretty much lost my business because of that. I'm sure the dealership was hurting too but it was bad business all around. The 6-speed manual was the whole reason I wanted it. I can't imagine how angry I would've been if I had just bought one and found out a few weeks after.
braderhart··on VW 'Dieselgate' software developed at Audi in 1999: report
Right before this happened I was looking into getting a Golf SportsWagen Diesel TDI. When the news broke, the dealership I was working with stopped selling them. They tried to get me to buy a gas model instead. I asked them how much they were willing to work with me. They wouldn't even budge saying that the gas model wasn't affected, and that they didn't feel like the depreciation would be affected. Screw you VW!

braderhart··on Keeping secrecy the exception, not the rule
Because it's a web browser. What kind of proprietary trade secrets are they afraid of when every other browser is open, especially when they are touting the important of encryption and user security? More like they don't want users to know how much information they are actually collecting.
braderhart··on Keeping secrecy the exception, not the rule
How do you ensure encryption when something is closed source?
braderhart··on Keeping secrecy the exception, not the rule
Exactly my thoughts. I have no reason to trust Microsoft at this point.
braderhart··on Keeping secrecy the exception, not the rule
Does anyone else find it ironic that this is coming from Microsoft, yet they can't even open source a freaking web browser? Really?

Bryan, huge fan here! I agree and believe this is just a primer to making that happen. I'd personally like to see containers become the default for application deployment and sandboxing on all operating systems:

Any chance you're planning for a "desktop" version of SmartOS?

braderhart··on What Makes Software Good?
I really wanted to like this article, but it should have been called "What Makes Software Interoperability Good." There wasn't a lot of useful information about what makes software good at a high-level.
