barkerja··on Passkeys.io – A Passkey Authentication Demo
I would assume so, but I'm not 100% sure. I personally haven't yet messed with Passkeys much aside from use on a couple of sites that have implemented them.

My working assumption is if you wanted to use a new browser, you'd have to attempt to log into the service with the new browser. When the Passkey flow prompts you with a QR code to scan, you'd have to use your iPhone/iPad to scan that QR code to allow entry. What happens after that, I have no clue.

barkerja··on Passkeys.io – A Passkey Authentication Demo
1. I don't believe you can, but I could be wrong.

2. Apple does this using Keychain (iCloud), but that's limited to Safari in iOS/iPadOS/macOS.

3. I assume would be treated as any other MFA option; if you lose your auth code generator with no backups, you're SOL. With Apple, you can setup what they call a contact recovery, which lets a trusted contact be a point of recovery for your account.

4. I don't believe this is an issue specific to Passkeys.

5. Account recovery isn't really necessary, unless you hit up against point 3, in which case it's about recovering your ability to use the passkey and not so much the account.

6. If emails are being treated as usernames, they absolutely should be validated.

If emails are being treated as usernames, in a real world usage, they should be verified. But beyond that, no verification is necessary.
barkerja··on macOS 13 Ventura review
Over the years, more options were added to the system settings, and the old UI did not lend itself well to holding all those various options/configurations. It became a burden to find exactly what you were needing; not to mention it was beginning to look "out of place" with the rest of the OS.

So yes, it functioned poorly, while also looking terrible by today's standards.

barkerja··on macOS 13 Ventura review
This is far from "ruining macOS". System Settings was one of the few areas of the OS that hadn't been updated in forever. This was long overdue.
barkerja··on macOS 13 Ventura review
The previous System Settings UI was long overdue an update. While the new UI does very much resemble macOS, I don't see that as an issue, as it works very well in this context. At least, I believe it does, but I am no UI/UX expert.
barkerja··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
It's often referred to as compassion fatigue. Just because you have a love for something doesn't mean you should do it for free or cheap. The job also isn't all love and cuddles; there's a lot of having to turn away care or euthanizing because owners can't afford the needed care.
barkerja··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
> The cost of labor is ridiculously cheap (people become Vet Tech's for love, not money), and buildings need not be in commercial centers, so capital costs are minimal.

This is absolutely not true and it's a big issue in the field currently (my wife is a Veterinarian). This kind of thinking is also what is causing a lot of mental health issues in the field.

These features were actually recently added. See https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-16-preview/features/

barkerja··on Dark Sky Has a New Home (2020)
I don't believe the Weather app in iOS 15 /fully/ uses Dark Sky; just for some things. But that appears to change in iOS 16 with /all/ the data coming from WeatherKit (aka Dark Sky).

Edit: Here's the support page that details this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211777

barkerja··on Dark Sky Has a New Home (2020)
This is available in the updated weather app in iOS 16. Each tile of information is clickable with nice hourly graphs. For example, clicking on the UV Index tile will now show an hourly graph of the UV Index, and lets you cycle across each day through the week.
barkerja··on Plans to Re-enable the GitHub Integration
Unless you live in the Salesforce world. Heroku has a couple of really nice sfdx products that make life much easier. Heroku Connect has been a godsend for our company.
barkerja··on Ask HN: 6-hour workdays more important than 4-day workweeks IMO
Agree 100% with this take. But my question is: how do you mesh all these types together and run an effective team/company? Or is that even possible?
barkerja··on Erlang/OTP 25.0 Release
This is great. I hope this finds its way to Elixir land.
barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
That seems to run contrary to what others believe here.
barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
As a user, isn't that already the case? When I use my AMEX, or Chase cards via Apple Pay, I accrue the same amount of points/cash back as if I were to swipe the card or enter the number directly.
barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
I understand the /why/, but that wasn't my question. I'm curious what sort of behavior others hope/expect to see from their mobile device if things change towards a fragmented experience of apps being used for NFC payments and not our digital wallets.

Are you suggesting that things basically remain the same, sans any fees?

barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
I'm 100% for choice, and I support the EU's (and any other entity) efforts to change this, but I have a simple question for those here:

When you pull out your device, and raise it to a POS terminal, what is the behavior that you expect and/or desire?

For me personally, the behavior I desire is basically what happens today: the digital Wallet opens, and I choose which card I want to pay with (or do nothing and allow my default card to be used).

If we want to flip this experience on its head, what are our options? A configuration for NFC/payments that controls this behavior?

I'm simply trying to think of the cause and effect here. I am not a designer/UX person, simply just a dumb backend engineer, but I have a strong appreciation for good UX/design and absolutely know it when I see it. Curious to hear other's thoughts/opinions on this.

barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
> Google does not allow apps within the app store to present their own payment method

Does this apply to NFC as well? On Android, if an app wants to use NFC for payment that is not processed through Google Pay, can it exist on the Google Play store?

barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
Can you give an example of a card/financial institution where it's available on Google Pay but not Apple Pay?
barkerja··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
Convenience, plain and simple. I've never once been concerned about battery life on my phone. It's VERY rare for me to ever be below 50% at any point in the day, even on a long day where I've been mostly on cellular. But the iPhone now has a feature that even if your battery is "dead", some cards will still be available for use (it's a very specific feature/setting).

Same applies with my watch, which has the same cards available. It's nice if I run to a convenience mart after a run, where I often don't carry my phone or wallet. Just tap my watch at the terminal, and off I go!

I carry -- and regularly use -- around 5-6 cards that all have specific uses. Having a digital wallet to manage these is awesome. My physical wallet, I carry only three cards: my ID, debit card and my health insurance card.

barkerja··on I put my whole life into a single database
The service/app looks great! Are there any plans for 2FA on the near roadmap?
barkerja··on I put my whole life into a single database
This is a really cool project, but I have to ask a very simple question: is there an immeasurable impact of trying to measure all the impacts on your life?
barkerja··on Why companies move off Heroku (besides the cost)
We're big users of Heroku Connect, which has been an incredible product for our use.
barkerja··on Show HN: Caddy v2.5.0
Where does Caddy live in a Kubernetes world -- or does it? (I'm not the most knowledgeable with either, so genuinely curious how these pieces all fit together).

barkerja··on Why I'll never use Affirm again
> Credit cards already give you a 30-day grace period before purchases start accruing interest.

This depends on the timing of your transaction and your statement date. If you purchase something 1 day before your statement date, and you don't pay it off that same day, you will accrue interest.

barkerja··on Apple Made $6.5B USD by No Longer Providing Accessories with New iPhones
Personally, I have no issue with this, although I can easily see how someone else may. I have so many desk drawers full of random iPhone/iPod/iPad chargers that it got to the point I was just beginning to leave new ones in the box and/or just throw them away.

What Apple should do was give the option to the consumer. If you choose to not include a charger then you receive a small credit.
