athinggoingon··on Siyuan: Privacy-first, self-hosted personal knowledge management software
I use org-mode for note taking and personal knowledge base.

In my notes.org file, I collect all kind of snippets, knowledge, ideas, how-tos, and such stuff.

Outlines make it possible to hide parts of the text in the buffer.

A headline starts with one or more stars. A heading has one star, a sub-heading two, etc.

Use the linking feature in ordmode to link items/notes together through references.

Stick with a "File over app", Unix approach. You need to first rely on a directory structures, filenames, plaintext, lists and orgmode.

Leverage Unix tools: unix commands, (rip)grep, git, fzf, etc.

Except that's what the Fed is trying to correct. Inflation is caused when the money supply in an economy grows at faster rate than the economy's ability to produce goods and services.
athinggoingon··on Startup lender Silicon Valley Bank to sell stock to cope with cash burn
> The government finances its operations by issuing T-bills. If nobody is willing to buy T-bills, the government can't get cash to pay government employees, including the FBI, CIA, military, etc.

If nobody is willing to buy T-bills, the Fed will just monetize the debt, which is something they have been doing since 2008.

There's a reason the Fed's balance sheet is now around 8 trillion dollars.

athinggoingon··on Pessimistic thoughts on startups (2020)
>> They’ll run out of money in 2-3 years if it’s not working.

No. They won't run out of money in 2-3 years, they IPO. Or at least, they did in a zero-interest rate environment.

"VCs pay the angels. PE pays the VCs. IBs pay the PEs. All for the hope of an IPO so the market will pay the IBs."

"The entire market ecology has a tough time adapting to the end of cheap (even free) money, with cash flow, rather than "valuation" being the central focus. Those who entered finance after 2008 are, basically, unskilled labor. Lehman in 2008 was a picnic compared to 2000 if you were doing tech related ventures."

athinggoingon··on 'Nobody Wants to Work Anymore' Meme Cites Real Newspaper Articles
I didn't interpret the parent comment's reference to "automation and robotics" to include "industrialization and specialization". Sounds like a bunch of brogrammers coding up useless growth tech, funded by clueless VC funds. FTX and Upstart comes to mind.

...but what does Upstart do? https://youtu.be/WWxl4W_eVUA?t=110

athinggoingon··on 'Nobody Wants to Work Anymore' Meme Cites Real Newspaper Articles
How exactly is "automation and robotics" taking the burden from our shoulders? I live in a single family house. I still need to hire plumbers, electricians, handy men to paint my house, etc. I still need to hover over a porcelain bowl a few times a day and clog it up a few times a year. Toilet augers and plungers to the rescue.

Her review of Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco https://web.archive.org/web/20221113051430/https://www.goodr...

My very uninformed impression of how companies work is something like:

- there is a CEO, who is a guy

- there is a board, consisting of a bunch of guys who are friends with the CEO

- they all have fiduciary duties and if they fail to meet them they will get yelled at by a judge in Delaware

- ???

- shareholder value gets maximized

The absolute worst is iCIMS. It's probably used as an obedience/submissiveness test by the recruiters. If you make it through the application process you've shown that you're desperate enough for this job.
athinggoingon··on Stablecoin Mechanics 2: Tether-Celsius
Listen/read the latest econtalk episode to learn why Stable coins are supper popular at places like Argentina: https://www.econtalk.org/devon-zuegel-on-inflation-argentina...

Basically, the reason is that the Government print a lot of money which result in high/hyper inflation, but then create all these obstacles for the locals to run transactions in more stable currencies (e.g. USD). The locals use Stable coins to facilitate transactions that would otherwise be very hard or impossible to perform in local currencies (e.g. buying a house).

athinggoingon··on Online, “run philosophy” has become a coded way of talking about emigrating
Whataboutism or whataboutery (as in "what about…?") denotes in a pejorative sense a procedure in which a critical question or argument is not answered or discussed, but retorted with a critical counter-question which expresses a counter-accusation. From a logical and argumentative point of view it is considered a variant of the Tu-quoque pattern (Latin 'you too', term for a counter-accusation), which is a subtype of the Ad-hominem argument.

athinggoingon··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Reading through the comments, does it feel like they have no idea what you're going through or where you're coming from? If so, let me tell you what worked for me. None of these comments ever works without having someone around you that you can reality test with. You need to find a partner in life. You need to get married. And no, a live-in partner won't do.

That is it. There is no other solutions for you. Meetups, hobbies, social contacts, "experiences", ... They won't work. You will come back to an empty home at the end of it and discover the same old problems you were trying to deal with.

Just get married.

athinggoingon··on Ask HN: Corporate recruiters, is iCIMS an obedience/submissiveness test?
Recruiters love it though: https://www.reddit.com/r/humanresources/comments/dg4gnx/look...

I think iCIMS is bad for the same reason enterprise software is bad: "Enterprise software is bad because it separates developers from users. A chief complaint is that it serves the CIO rather than corporate users; ease of use is lost in development."

athinggoingon··on U.S. has world’s highest rate of children living in single-parent households
If you look at the numbers, the US seems to be doing a lot better than the rest of the world since 68% of children live in two-parent households versus 51% in the rest of the world.

"While U.S. children are more likely than children elsewhere to live in single-parent households, they’re much less likely to live in extended families. In the U.S., 8% of children live with relatives such as aunts and grandparents, compared with 38% of children globally."

athinggoingon··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses in 2021?
I loved your story and that's the kind of business I am trying to build with my wife.

One quick question.

There exists many other sites offering the same service at even cheaper price points (e.g. EZ sniper, Myibidder, BidSlammer, GIXEN, JBidWatcher, esniper, AuctionStealer, Goofbit, etc.)

How do you survive in such a commoditized market?
