arkitaip··on Never build something no body wants to use
I guess this is a Show HN? Regardless, on mobile this looks downright broken.
arkitaip··on TheirTube – How do the recommended videos look on their Youtube home page?
You can also use a very basic rule in, say, uBlock Origin to hide the sidebar completely: youtube.com###related
arkitaip··on Airbus to build 'first interplanetary cargo ship'
Did you read the article? They are creating a satellite, ERO, set to launch 2026 for an actual mission.
arkitaip··on How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers (2019)
Thank you for the TLDR.
arkitaip··on Launch HN: Charityvest (YC S20) – Employee charitable funds and gift matching
Why not issue payouts instantly or at least on a daily basis?
arkitaip··on Turns out half the internet has a single-point-of-failure called “Cloudflare”
> We call it Proactive Nameservers, and we’re the only company in the world doing it for some reason.

Wait, why? [0]:

> Proactive Nameservers is a patent-pending system that optimizes the nameserver delegation for your mission critical domain names.

Oh.

arkitaip··on Why GPT-3 Matters
This has always been a problem with HN due to the robotic nature of its audience.
arkitaip··on Why OKRs might not work at your company
Engineering is clearly run by malicious compliance geniuses.
arkitaip··on Cloudflare was down
Same here. Only figured it out because just one of the computers uses Cloudflare dns and the others were fine...
arkitaip··on Tell HN: Google drops blogspot.in, breaking hundreds of thousands of permalinks
Or there might be a very robust infrastructure in place to prevent that from happening because there is now a multi-billion dollar market that companies want to serve.
arkitaip··on Ridiculous Math Problems
This reminds me of the riddle by the good soldier Svejk:

-----

"Would you know how to calculate the diameter of the globe?"

"No, I'm afraid I wouldn't," answered Svejk, "but I'd like to ask you a riddle myself, gentlemen. Take a three-storied house, with eight windows on each floor. On the roof there are two dormer windows and two chimneys. On every floor there are two tenants. And now, tell me, gentlemen, in which year the house-porter's grandmother died?"

arkitaip··on 2010 SoftBank 30 year vision document: its a wilde ride [pdf]
It's the perfect ugly design to communicate a pretentious and empty vision.
arkitaip··on Amazon Honeycode – build web and mobile apps without writing code
There are much powerful && easier to use no-code/low-code products on the market but sooner or later, you will need to code and work with databases. Even Bubble becomes complex once you move beyond the most basic use cases.
arkitaip··on Amazon Honeycode – build web and mobile apps without writing code
It's weird that Amazon releases this low-code tool and yet they can't offer basic managed CMS/Wordpress to millions of businesses out there. Their pricing could start at 20 USD per month and they could conquer the premium (wordpress) hosting market dominated by WP Engine, Kinsta, Media Temple, etc.
arkitaip··on No, Safari 14 does not block Google Analytics
Firefox on Windows has the same problem with it's Enhanced Tracking Protection. I've just decided to disable it all together* and just use uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger.

* Actually, you can't just disable it. You have to select the "custom" preset and then disable all the "protections".

arkitaip··on One simple yet crucial thing I learned from YC's StartupSchool
It's also been done to death, which is why it's being thrown around like a meme.
arkitaip··on Microsoft is shutting down Mixer and partnering with Facebook Gaming
It's also very hard to keep that account anonymous due to the crazy about of data gathering Facebook does and the ways it used that data to recommend you to new "friends" and what not.
arkitaip··on Why Figma Wins
I've been sketching, prototyping and designing UI for years and I just don't get Figma. It's just baffles me that people would work on this level of granularity (let's draw everything from scratch) instead of working with UI elements like buttons, text fields, etc. I feel like I'm missing something very fundamentally about Figma because every time I've used it I leave confused and frustrated.
arkitaip··on Reddit Welcomes Michael Seibel to Board of Directors
I doubt it. Anyone with the slightest knowledge about Seibel knows that he is super competent. What Reddit will judge him on will be what they perceive as hypocritical policy making; loss of subreddit and user power; and the lack of transparency.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What would you do with unmetered 10gig?
Depends. A AAA game like Red Dead Redemption 2 can take hours to download with a 100 Mbps connection.
arkitaip··on 25 Years of PHP
Please do share your PhpStorm journey at some point. I installed it yesterday after trying out Visual Studio Code for the Nth time and again being utterly unimpressed with having to use a GUI fobic editor in 2020. Everything feels clunky and when you start adding more complex plugins things really start to fall apart, like having to use a FTP plugin through the command line.

PhpStorm has its flaws [0] but so far I'm shocked by how much more productive I am with it as compared to Visual Studio Code. It's like having access to a wise dev who can point out flaws with your code, turning the IDE into a learning tool.

[0] The non-native UI of PhpStorm is annoying but not a major issue. I dislike how project centric it is but I like that you can configure almost every setting on a per project level. It's also very expensive for solo devs (edit: actually the monthly cost for individual use seems to be 8.9 EUR which isn't that bad).

arkitaip··on IBM Cloud was down, as well as their status page
This has to be the most unconventional anti-spam technique I've ever heard about.
arkitaip··on Where to Blog
Any tool turns into shit if not taken care off. Enable auto updates in wp-config.php. Limit login attempts. Use ManageWP to easily manage several WP installations through a single interface. Add a (free) security plugin like Wordfence.

I've been running WP installations for years and never had a problem with them getting hacked.

arkitaip··on Why I Use Suckless Tools
Most of us have been there, done that since childhood. Once you reach a certain age, it's more important to get things done and not fuss over trivialities in life.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Zyro – AI Powered Website Builder
Man, your PR seems to suffer from corp speak and is something you would expect from a fortune 100 middle executive and not a recently launched startup. Dare to be human.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest way to make a website?
Porkbun isn't just the cheapest registrar most of the time, they are legit and very trustworthy. Moved most of my domains a couple of years ago and it just works.

If you are looking for domain deals, domcomp.com/ is invaluable.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: The most impressive non-academic achievement?
What makes you think she isn't working her ass off?
arkitaip··on Show HN: A Firefox add-on to strip Google search results of 'blacklisted' URLs
Google search filter is an alternative that has been around for quite some time and has some additional features: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/g-search-filt...
arkitaip··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
Not wanting to rely on Google - especially Gmail - as my central identity provider is why I switched to Fastmail. Sure it costs and the migration took a couple of days but it's been worth it.
arkitaip··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
Hey, i recently switched to Fastmail too! It's been surprisingly painless, even with importing mail, calendars and what not. Like you mention, the most time consuming part has been going through my accounts to update the email address to the new one.
