arkitaip··on Tesla sales drop for fifth month in a row in Europe
99% of the stuff you buy is "associated" with China.
arkitaip··on Google to develop AI that takes over computers, The Information reports
Maybe they should up the quality of the various AI features already pushed onto users first? From Google Workspace to the Messages Android app, their AI offerings are half-baked, often useless. My favorite right now is the spellchecking in Google Docs that doesn't detect your language so it autocorrects words that are right over and over again. Doesn't suggest or ask just autocorrects words randomly.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: I need to make a landing page for under 15usd in under 1h, what to do?
Check who has the cheapest year 1 domain at domcomp. Use Cloudflare pages for free with Bootstrap or roll your own.
arkitaip··on Following the Lean Startup Method
One of the most important life lessons I've learnt is to not conflate the model for the reality it tries to capture but also not waste a good model because it doesn't perfectly capture the underlying reality. In this case, poor understanding of both the model and the underlying reality means that people will dismiss both the lean startup methodology and MVP as a technique when both are incredibly powerful tools aimed at exploring if and how a product might be successful.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What is the best AI powered product you have experienced?
I've used Mac Whisper to generate closed captions for video clips and it's magical. Saves dozens of hours if not more and there's a free version.
arkitaip··on Reddit says it's made $203M so far licensing its data
How much would it cost for OpenAI to simulate Reddit?
arkitaip··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
> What makes this situation so ridiculous is that while we're all watching for scammers attempting to imitate legitimate organisations, FedEx is out there imitating scammers!

Hah!

arkitaip··on Flashlight damages $14M F-35 fighter jet engine beyond repair
The executive summary is so well written that a civilian with zero aviation knowledge can understand the incident.
arkitaip··on [dead]
I'm surprised how meh Twitter remained despite Musk's bragging about transforming Twitter into an American WeChat. Like even the recommendation algo for the For You feed is so low quality that it displays the same stuff I just watched in the Following feed. At least try to excel at the engineering parts damnit.
arkitaip··on Blueprint health protocol
I love his scientific approach to health and I find his transformation inspiring but the costs of following his protocol is probably in the hundreds if not thousands every day.
arkitaip··on Economic downturn and the influence of AI are claiming numerous jobs
Amazing that you see that as a feature and not a horrible bug that causes societal destabilization.
arkitaip··on Website Will Self-Destruct
It's dead alright, Jim.
arkitaip··on Open extensions on Firefox for Android debut December 14
Amazing news, been waiting for years for this.
arkitaip··on Highest Paying Jobs of the Future [2040 Edition]
I am having an increasingly hard time imagining 'jobs' existing in 2040 in any meaningful capacity for most people. I get the article is mostly trying to be funny but imagine thinking that humans can do AI related work better than an AI.
arkitaip··on Calibre – New in Calibre 7.0
I used Calibre with my Kobo and while it made the Kobo so much more useful, the interface is somewhat complicated and gets worse as you add plugins. Didn't matter in the end because I stopped using the Cobo in favor of my phone (ReadEra is great in creating a good enough reading experience).
arkitaip··on [dead]
This seems obvious but I wonder what it would take for 3rd party youtube players to start intelligently removing embedded ads? Surely the AI tech is advanced enough?
arkitaip··on Peter Thiel is taking a Break from Democracy
A bored billionaire lost in his childhood's science fiction fantasies. What a waste of resources.
arkitaip··on Using GPT-4 Vision with Vimium to browse the web
I've used Bitwarden to faster fill out job applications.
arkitaip··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic
I think their primary goal is to make life difficult for OpenAI by investing in a competent competitor that brings a level of agility that Google just can't deliver.
arkitaip··on Loyal workers are selectively and ironically targeted for exploitation
Maybe it's not about the research being obvious but having research that you can point to when you need to have The Talk about your boss. It raises everyone's awareness and makes it a bit easier to create policy that can combat psychologically unsafe work places.
arkitaip··on What is the Demoscene? An interview
Being a techie also means that you aquire meta skills like being able to figure out and troubleshoot random tech very fast, no matter how trivial or complex. Where most people would never bother to dig deep enough or quite really fast, techies can deep wide and deep, over a long period if need be.
arkitaip··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
I absolutely love that even with a corrupted system you can use properties of the system to ensure just outcomes.
arkitaip··on The synthetic social network is coming
This has the same appeal as your email account's spam folder but if it can expedite the death of social media I'm all for it.
arkitaip··on Mozilla's midlife crisis has taken it from pioneer to Google's weird neighbor
Bookmarklets are important for all kinds of web dev work, including accessibility where some bookmarklets are entire apps.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Will Google delete inactive gmail accounts that forward email?
Your forwarding accounts will probably be deleted according to their policy [0] as an active account is specified as "include these types of actions you take when you sign in or while you’re signed in to your Google Account:

    * Reading or sending an email

    * Using Google Drive

    * Watching a YouTube video

    * Downloading an app on the Google Play Store

    * Using Google Search

    * Using Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app or service"

arkitaip··on Why are our keyboard not wireless?
Which brand and model?
arkitaip··on Is the ChatGPT and Bing AI boom already over?
I use it several times per week. It's a tool with its time and place, not a magical wand that will replace any effort and thinking.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Are there any reasons why services like UserVoice shouldn't be used?
Are you sure you want your product development roadmap to be this open? Feedback platforms have major issues.

Users will suggest a feature - and nothing happens for years. And because it's trivial to suggest even very complex features without skin in the game, you will end up with an endless Todo list that lives a ghost life adjacent to your issue tracker.

It sounds great in theory but the reality is that these solutions expose the inner workings of companies and mostly it means seeing how broken product development.

Take for instance Raindrop.io. It has a public feedback platform like the one you describe and it's depressing and worrying seeing how features and bugs stay in dev limbo for years without any meaningful progress.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: In a hybrid startup, is it more optimal for career to be in the office?
What are you basing this on?
arkitaip··on Remote workers' connection to companies' missions hits record low
Hybrid is the nice surprise here. Maybe we don't need to be at the office 5 days per week to get all the benefits of office work.
