analyst74··on Ask HN: YC co-founder matching is bad
I wish the same! My first couple weeks on co-founder matching were consumed with meeting a wide range of folks, most of whom in the "I'd like to start a company if the right co-founder / idea / other criteria present themselves" stage.

One thing that seems to reduce the noise is selecting "I'm working full time on my startup" and make that a requirement for co-founder. But it would be nice to also meet those who are not actively working on an idea but very committed to finding a co-founder to start something.

analyst74··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
> I experienced a deep realisation that our thoughts manifest from nowhere and not from ourselves (words fail me here) and that the construct of 'me' was completely false and was just a reverberation of my environment.

Wait, is this not common knowledge??

analyst74··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
Same, earlier in my career I was excited by the impact I make, but then it dawned on me, that impact has almost zero impact to my own bottom line. And I failed to come up with reasons why I should kill myself over making other people rich.
analyst74··on The Google layoffs are about personal ambition and poor leadership
I have a very similar observation.

My belief is that when you have a group of extremely smart and hard working people competing for promotions, the ones focusing on managing perception and relationships will do better than those focusing on the business or product.

analyst74··on OpenAI is in talks for tender offer that would value it at $29B
I thought OpenAI was a non-profit? How does that affect the acquisition? Does that bound the acquirer to its missions?
analyst74··on What Is a Wildcard Person?
This is basically describing a smart person. Many smart people don't act like this because they correctly realize doing so is harmful to their career until they are higher in the org chart.
analyst74··on Kickstarter shuts down campaign for Unstable Diffusion amid changing guidelines
When I dated a musician, she would randomly point out all the pieces in various kinds of music that are "borrowed" or blatantly copied from other music. It is understood among musicians that almost all music are derivatives of prior art.
analyst74··on Challenging algorithms and data structures every programmer should try
I work on a database team at Google, tricky algorithms are definitely used. Now did I write any of those? No, they were already implemented in places where it makes sense before I joined the team.

I'm sure the dynamo team, the spanner team and etc are using all the techniques to make their database performant.

analyst74··on South Dakota first to ban TikTok on state-owned devices
I learned about the protest on TikTok from scrolling, probably because I have shown interest in content about China.
analyst74··on Narcissistic Collapse
Thanks for sharing some examples! Funnily I'm trying to develop some of the traits and encourage my more humble friends to do the same.

For example, I find that not believing I deserve anything actually led to people treating me badly in the past. And developing a healthy dose of "I deserve this" mentality has improved my day-to-day interactions and even relationships.

Another thing I learnt much later in life was that wanting success is the first step of... success, and there is nothing wrong with grand dreams.

Maybe I need a narcissist friend and exchange notes.

analyst74··on Ask HN: Azure has run out of compute – anyone else affected?
Obviously Azure failed its customer here, but everyone with data centers in Europe is tightening their belts and preparing for the worst.

I suspect AWS and GCP just have more headroom in EU.

analyst74··on Layoff spree in Silicon Valley spells end of an era for Big Tech
The number is a little higher than a couple thousand.
analyst74··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
There is a reason why Facebook had to pay more than peers and why Amazon struggle to hire.
analyst74··on Colleges that ditched admission tests find it harder to fairly choose students
People are not arguing SAT is 100% fair, but that it's most fair compared to alternatives.
analyst74··on The Gervais Principle, or the Office According to “The Office” (2009)
Maybe I'm just naive, but I found this principle overly cynical.

For example, the "sociopathic" intern can also be described as someone with healthy amount of disrespect to existing organizational structures and tries to bring innovation to a dinosaur firm. He took the risk and suffered the consequences like a man.

analyst74··on How to succeed at Meta
If you feel like a family working for a company, but does not have significant ownership stake, you're being conned.
analyst74··on Tinder turns 10: what have we learned from a decade of dating apps?
Prevalence of dating apps also generated unprecedented amount of data that revealed people's dating habits and preferences.
analyst74··on The rise of 'stealerships' and the shady economics of car buying
I also had the experience where I placed an order on ford website, routed it to a dealer who agreed to honor the online price. 5 months later, when the car was delivered onto the dealer lot, they wanted 10k more.
analyst74··on Ex-Twitter exec blows the whistle, alleging reckless cybersecurity policies
It's still comes down to a matter of urgency or value perception.

You don't want your doctor to overlook any problems just because they are rare because your health is really valuable.

analyst74··on Second-Order Thinking
Isn't second order effects quite common and observable in software systems, in history, in economics and everything?
analyst74··on Design of a Modern Cache (2016)
It's kinda funny when the website talking about high availability becomes ... not available.
analyst74··on Why is recruiting developers so difficult?
Great advice.

We can see the opposite in Amazon where they successfully built a reputation as a terrible place to work with low pay relative to its peers, and now struggle to attract talents.

analyst74··on Y Combinator narrows current cohort size by 40%, citing downturn and funding
There is only $2 trillion "real money", all the other money in circulation is debt. You can search for the definition of M0/M1/M2 money for more detailed explanation.
analyst74··on What’s going on with Google and Facebook hiring freezes?
Engineers with good track record and interviewing skills will have no problem getting US salary in Canada.

In fact Google pays Canadian similar to their non-premiun US locations like Raleigh.

analyst74··on Robinhood lays off 23% of staff
"One who passes the sentence should swing the sword"

If it's good enough for a lord, must be good for the CEO.

analyst74··on That time when I accidentally social engineered myself to a film set
> Film crews are incredibly overworked, underpaid and work in absolutely terrible conditions.

People get into the arts by choice, nobody chooses to work in films because they're starving. It's weird to feel sorry for people who get to do their dream jobs.

> Film production is an intricate machine that requires everything to be perfectly in place in order to get a shot and things very frequently go wrong even without random people walking on set and gumming up the works.

I've been on filmsets and have the opposite impression. While they have a script that describes the set, most of it is actually improvised. As long as you don't get into the shot, or disrupt people doing work, you are not affecting the production.

analyst74··on Bridesmaids go professional
Makeup solves that problem for most people.
analyst74··on Bridesmaids go professional
So the wedding ringer was a true story!
analyst74··on How Not to Fight Inflation
Supply chain disruption is only a problem because central banks from around the world tried to print out of the pandemic.

If they just let market run its course, we'd have a severe recession caused by shutdowns and job losses in early 2020. Demand for consumer goods would be significantly reduced and the crippled supply would be sufficient.

analyst74··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
Toronto builds ~3x new units per capita every year compared to NY, let's hope they don't slow down.
