SaltyBackendGuy··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Being from the US, I hadn't considered that HR could be anything other than employee hostile.
SaltyBackendGuy··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Unfortunately, they're controlling the narrative. It's unlikely that their negligence will come to light, given how many powerful entities are invested in their financial success.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Good people refuse to do bad things
> it would cause someone to lose a job they didn’t know was under threat

Under this guidance, wouldn't almost every technological advancement then qualify as bad? i.e. typewriter repair, etc.

SaltyBackendGuy··on Cognition launches new SWE-2 model, Rivaling Fable 5.1 and GPT-Astra
> And yes, I tried again

This made me laugh a bit. I was forced to do an evaluation of their shit product twice due to being backed by the same PE firm; "take a look at it again, it's much better now". It sucked the second time also...

SaltyBackendGuy··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
In recent memory of companies I've worked for, even the absolute WORST executives haven't gotten fired. They always announce that "it's time for another adventure" or "I am taking a break". So I am not shocked they didn't fire him, although the board is now probably wishing they did.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90%
You just need to have a M5, 128gi setup to get sub 1 sec playlist loads /s
SaltyBackendGuy··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Maybe a bit of hindsight bias / the outside view here, but I feel like they're completely asleep if they didn't anticipate strong demand for this specific use case.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Same. My last vice is Reddit, which I really need to quit.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
Slightly off topic, but I strongly believe that the rise of "professional" CEOs was the beginning of the end for quality products and services. Before, you were generally an expert in your particular domain and was invested in solving the customer's problems.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
> because in a correctly working organization a single person wouldn't be able to throw shit with such a blast radius.

I generally agree with you, however this makes an assumption about what "correctly" means. In this case, Meta could be working correctly and take it's orders directly from the Zuck commander's intent. In which case he would be a single person that would have a massive impact on the outcome. Therefore, should be appropriately accountable.

SaltyBackendGuy··on CEO who fired 900 people on Zoom just before Christmas wants his job back
What more can he do, other than get canned, to be accountable?
SaltyBackendGuy··on Stealing Reasoning Traces from Proprietary LLM APIs
Or even my fable credits run out mid task and need to switch back to opus >.<
SaltyBackendGuy··on Mario Meets Pareto
I love how the data from top players shows that they're using a build on the Pareto Front, i.e. that the wisdom of crowds settles on a meta that is optimum. I wonder if we analyzed other games, if the meta were all consistently on the Pareto Front (WoW, Diablo, w/e). Likely so.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Mario Meets Pareto
Ha exactly. Can't let the kids win for free.
SaltyBackendGuy··on DARPA, U.S. Air Force fly AI-controlled F-16
Ha - this was the first thing that came to mind. I read this in Arnold's voice.

SaltyBackendGuy··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
That's crony capitalism again
SaltyBackendGuy··on Slow breathing modulates brain function and risk behavior
I first learned about this in the army, called "tactical breathing". I still consistently use this before public speaking or if I feel myself in a manic/stressed state of mind.
SaltyBackendGuy··on Vercel April 2026 security incident
Maybe legal red tape?
SaltyBackendGuy··on When legal sports betting surges, so do Americans' financial problems
You're spot on (ex casino worker). There's no conspiracy. Speaking for myself, I was nice to people because it made me more money in tips (also, because I am not an a-hole). Made a lot of "friends" when I worked in the casino, employees and patrons. It's not any different than folks I work with in tech (i.e. some you connect with and have genuine friendships and some are work friends). They likely stopped calling her due to upper management telling staff to not engage due to legal liability (or they lose their job).

edit: Additionally, there are whales and there are folks who's job it is to get them in the door (we had game managers for the big games).

SaltyBackendGuy··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
It depends on what you mean by "win".
SaltyBackendGuy··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
This is a common archetype when people get challenged (escalation of commitment), they effectively double down. I don't necessarily think it was racially motivated (but also don't doubt that it could have been).
SaltyBackendGuy··on Elon Musk pushes out more xAI founders as AI coding effort falters
I am honestly a bit disappointed it couldn't do basic things, like play X on Spotify. To be fair, I accidentally activated Grok for holding the voice command button too long (which is another UX issue - i.e. 2 voice command interfaces).
SaltyBackendGuy··on MacBook Neo
I might be a dinosaur but I just can't stand laptops that have touch screen...
SaltyBackendGuy··on Mac mini will be made at a new facility in Houston
This reminds me of a great freakonomics podcast that talked about China being run by engineers and America being run by lawyers.

SaltyBackendGuy··on Capital One to acquire Brex for $5.15B
Hopefully they had the confidence/insight to negotiate properly. I went through BN$ exit (was employee 19) early in my career and unfortunately, only select people at the top got retirement money. The most frustrating part was the Big Co. execs that came in much later, did literally nothing, and got a massive payday. Lesson learned though...

> Trump has been the only one that the corporations couldn't buy

Hasn't he accepted donations from many mega corporations? My assumption is that a corporation wont donate money, without the expectation of ROI.

SaltyBackendGuy··on Why is the Gmail app 700 MB?
Meet still works on Pixel phones as a solution/parity for FaceTime. I wonder if it's bundled in the web build or they're the same build under the hood.
