ResNet··on John Walker, founder of Autodesk, has died
I think this is the JS tool mentioned: https://bigarrow.tripod.com/js-encr/j4jscrypt.html

His main website is really fantastic, well worth a visit: https://www.fourmilab.ch/

ResNet··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
I am quite impressed that the ancient Amazon.com link [0] on the page (with quite a few non-trivial query params) still returns relevant results today. A good case of Cool URIs don't change [1].

Duck DNS is able to do the same thing. Pretty neat not needing to specify the IP.
ResNet··on Peltier vs. compressor-based cooling (2019)
It's worth mentioning the recent development of extremely miniaturized (soda can-sized) refrigeration compressors, such as those from Aspen Systems [1]; these allow for efficient cooling in small spaces that just can't be achieved with Peltier-based solutions.

An interesting project I've seen using one of them is this portable chiller suit to cool the human body on-the-go, intended for relief of Multiple Sclerosis symptoms [2].

For DIY/prototyping, there are a bunch of Chinese manufacturers now producing compressors of these sizes along with the appropriate driver board for the variable-speed AC motor [3]. I'm excited to see how this technology will be applied elsewhere in time.

ResNet··on Plex: Important notice of a potential data breach
It appears the password change works fine if you deselect the "Sign out connected devices" box. [1]

ResNet··on Chat control: EU Commission presents mass surveillance plan on May 11
It shouldn't (directly) affect ProtonMail — they're based in Switzerland, which is not an EU member and thus not bound by EU law.

That said, it's possible that this could be implemented in a GDPR-like fashion, where non-EU companies offering services to EU persons would be required to follow these laws.

It's also worth noting that the EU and Switzerland do have some bilateral agreements [1] for single market access, though, which involves it adopting some required EU law to facilitate this access; however, that should not be relevant for this specific issue.

ResNet··on Iron Salt Aerosol for Climate Control
Solutions like these seem like they very well may do a good job in slowing global warming with relatively little effort/cost invested, but for political reasons won't see the light of day until they become a last resort, far too late in the game.

I can imagine humans a century from now wishing we had deployed them sooner and prevented so much unnecessary destruction.

ResNet··on South Africa is running out of Marmite
Worth a try whilst you still can, but prepare for a taste unlike anything you've had before (I mean that seriously! It's that weird.)

I've eaten this stuff on toast from an early age and love it. It really is a thing people either love or hate, I don't know anyone that grew to enjoy it over time.

ResNet··on Microsoft is reportedly looking to bring ads to free-to-play Xbox games
I should clarify that I really don't want ads, but if users were forced to see ads, this is one of the better policies to avoid harming UX too much.
ResNet··on Exponentially Better Rotations
Seeing Euler's formula [1] elegantly come into play was very satisfying! Posts like these are why I love HN.

ResNet··on Microsoft is reportedly looking to bring ads to free-to-play Xbox games
> Sources familiar with the matter told Insider that one of the ways ads may show up in these games could be as digitally rendered billboards in car racing games.

Glad to read this part — if Microsoft enforces rules on how ads can be displayed like this, it would provide a good balance between supporting developers and providing an unobtrusive user experience.

ResNet··on Ask HN: How does Apple achieve both secrecy and quality for a release?
> It's a culture of accountability, not committees. Every product and feature has a DRI (Directly Responsible Individual). When something isn't working out, the first question is "who's the DRI on this?"

This seems to be in contrast to the tenet of blameless postmortems [1] adopted at Google et al. Does this culture lead to blaming said responsible individual, or is the feedback seen as constructive?

ResNet··on James Webb telescope's coldest instrument reaches operating temperature
Same here, the relief I felt when it completed the riskiest unfolding steps was huge. I'm so excited to see the results it provides.
ResNet··on James Webb telescope's coldest instrument reaches operating temperature
The fact that the telescope's cryocooler is acoustically symmetrical such that any vibrations made by each cylinder, and the actual flow of gas, is near-perfectly cancelled out is nothing short of amazing. [0]

Real Engineering made a video that covered this and more, which is well worth a watch. [1]

ResNet··on SVG passthrough precision
This is a nice dive. I've also came across some SVG libraries that end up converting SVG path coordinates from original floating point values into integers, and then apply a scale/transform to that path to get the desired final size. Presumably this is/was faster for complicated paths or other elements.
ResNet··on Vancouver proposes 10k-dollar annual fee for gas stations without EV charging
> Gas stations would be required to provide 50 kilowatts of charging power — enough for one DC fast charger.

Convenience is greatly sacrificed if only one charger is installed — it'll be a gamble if your local gas station has their charger free, etc., which makes planning on when to charge tricky. As many gas stations are likely to only invest the bare minimum to avoid this fee, this could become a common frustration if this goes ahead.

ResNet··on ‘Click to Cancel’ legislation introduced in Pennsylvania
This sounds great.

Devil's advocate: Would this (or existing states' legislation, like California's) have any means of protecting against e.g. a non-CA user just changing their location to CA and immediately canceling? It sounds like an easy loophole for non-CA folks.

ResNet··on ‘Click to Cancel’ legislation introduced in Pennsylvania
Whilst asking your bank/CC company to block a merchant is possible, it's not a reliable way of ensuring you aren't charged by the same company again — they could make use of a different payment processor (e.g. going from Stripe to BrainTree) or merchant account, and from the bank's perspective, a different entity made a charge and the ban would not be respected.

That's not to say that asking your bank to block Merchant X isn't useful, but the bank can't guarantee that the merchant won't be able charge you again via a different payment processor/etc., and is why some banks are hesitant to offer this functionality.

ResNet··on How to make your own CFexpress card for under $100
A Thunderbolt flash drive in the form factor of a USB-C YubiKey 5C Nano [0] would be the ultimate solution for me. I trust that some day we'll get there if it's not superseded by some other standard by then.

ResNet··on How to make your own CFexpress card for under $100
Many photographers don't earn what the "average" HNer does (if there is an average). My comment didn't really address the HN crowd.

The warranty aspect is a great point though, if a commercial photographer did this and lost their client's work because e.g. the pins broke off, I fear their clients' response.

The answer here comes down to what the individual is able to justify to themselves, be it via a cost-benefit analysis or merely "I'm a solo/hobbyist photographer, I could build this tomorrow evening during downtime and save some money, let's do it." :-)

ResNet··on How to make your own CFexpress card for under $100
Absolutely. I value my time spent working on hobby projects and end up paying money per hour I spend on it -- as far as I'm concerned it's worth every cent!
ResNet··on How to make your own CFexpress card for under $100
CFexpress cards are considerably more expensive than other similar forms of storage like SD cards — a comparable 256GB CFexpress card currently goes for $259.99 [0]. From a pure cost perspective, it could very well be worth it. As a hobby photographer I would consider doing this for the fun of it anyway.

ResNet··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
> I once got paid almost $1000, in just one day

This is surprisingly high in that I would have assumed it would be far more cost-effective for the company to improve automation here and bring in more equipment to assist — intuitively, even if such equipment would be expensive, it couldn't be more expensive than the labor costs.

What industry was this?

ResNet··on What Is Interchange?
Things are quite different in Europe, where EU interchange is capped at a much lower 0.3% for credit cards and 0.2% for debit cards for most transactions [0]. Despite this, banking fintechs are still thriving, such as Monzo*, N26, and Revolut.

* whilst Monzo is a UK bank, Visa/Mastercard still use the same EU domestic interchange rates in the UK post-Brexit, at least for now.

It can be easy for many on here (lots of lurkers too) to feel a sense of "HN imposter syndrome," believe it or not, so comments like this are really valuable in communicating that that sort of pedantry is not the norm!
