Merem··on CRPG Book Released
Heh, I'm still remembering this line: "[...]but if all goes well we're talking of a colored 480-page paperback for about $25-30. And that's printed on-demand via Amazon." ^^

But really, it is as mathgeek says. You are underestimating how much people are willing to pay for this. Though, as you said in the blog post, it's all future-talk at this point.

Merem··on CRPG Book Released
Happy to see the full release of this. Thanks to everyone that contributed and a big "thank you" to you that pushed the project along over the years.

(And as I've said back then: If a physical version is possible, I'm highly interested.)

Merem··on Podcasters are seeing encouraging numbers
Those are always welcome, thank you. I know of (1), (5) and (6) but haven't started them yet.

I've dabbled a bit in the "History of Japan" podcast but since I encountered some episodes that weren't accurate (although they weren't strictly about history), I've lost trust and stopped listening. Apart from that, the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" podcast is ok, albeit a bit too comedic at times for my taste.

Merem··on Podcasters are seeing encouraging numbers
This seems like a good opportunity for people to recommend some excellent and well-researched podcasts for various topics.

"Hardcore History" by Dan Carlin is such an example and I wish it was easier to find other such podcasts of similar quality.

Merem··on Defect that causes Huntington's disease has been corrected for the first time
Great news. Although it's already too late for my mother, my sister can definitely profit from it if it turns out well. And I guess I will have to take the test now to see whether I have the disease as well...
Merem··on Facebook Quietly Enters StarCraft War for AI Bots
"The contest Facebook entered, like most AI research in the area, used an older version of StarCraft, which is considered equally difficult for software to master."

I'm surprised this one hasn't been called out yet but Starcraft: Brood War and Starcraft II are completely different games, not just different versions.

And apart from what was already mentioned regarding information on the scene, this link is pretty useful: http://sscaitournament.com/index.php?action=tutorial

Merem··on Why Germans pay cash for almost everything
German here as well:

In addition to a.), I like having full control of my money and not be dependent on some third party when making purchases.

Merem··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
Of course I do. Just checked everything and my bookmarks number just above 1000. The ones I use the most and websites I need in the immediate future are organized in the bookmarks toolbar (I'm using Firefox). Apart from that, they are put into separate folders regarding various topics as well as a list with "random" links which I can't put anywhere else. They are useful to me in the sense that I don't need to remember all those 1000+ links as well as it being the fastest way to access a website (it's faster than typing).
Merem··on Linux pioneer Munich poised to ditch open source and return to Windows
Hm..

"At the time the report was released, the FSFE questioned why Accenture was commissioned to co-author a report assessing the use of Microsoft software, when the consultancy runs a joint venture with Microsoft called Avanade, which helps businesses implement Microsoft technologies. For its part, Accenture said it has an "independent view of the technology landscape".

"At the time Munich began the move to LiMux in 2004 it was one of the largest organizations to reject Windows, and Microsoft took the city's leaving so seriously that then CEO Steve Ballmer flew to Munich to meet the mayor. More recently, Microsoft last year moved its German company headquarters to Munich."

Everything else that is written there points towards it making no sense to switch back to Windows.

Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
That's not the case. I pointed out your specific picture is of an American store and therefore doesn't hold an value, despite it being a German chain (which you pointed to).

I certainly don't doubt that some supermarkets are built in the way you are describing (with the checkout being like that) but I personally haven't seen one yet.

Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
You are taking this way too seriously. I also doubt that "people accustomed to how stores in most of the world work" would all jump over the turnstyle, despite it being clearly not an exit. Especially the jumping (or climbing) part is one I really only see kids doing as they like to exercise since they are often full of energy.
Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
To be fair, those don't really count as they are built to serve American customers. The cashier, for example, would never put what you bought into your cart. (Heck, I wouldn't even allow it, just look at how messy it is.) That's why there is space behind the checkout.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hkXxvHAFttQ/maxresdefault.jpg

And looking at your picture, the space becomes more narrow at the checkout. I have no idea why they would need that much space - there is a lot of room between her and the barcode scanner.

Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
If I had witnessed that, I'm sure I would have had a smile on my face, considering only children would do something like that. Even as a shoplifter, you would use one of the lines.

But hey, at least your solution worked. Too bad about the disapproving looks though (depending on your age, maybe they thought you were some kind of delinquent).

Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
The perspective in that picture isn't exactly a good one. But there should be enough space to pass by them on the right side. This one is good and shows what I mean with "shopping cart + person".

http://www.lebensmittelzeitung.net/gallery/media/156/4733-de...

Is it? It's a line that's not relevant to you (it's for paying, not for getting out), so I don't see why one shouldn't just pass it?

Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
Those are wide enough for a shopping cart and a person next to it, so one can pass the line decently fine. And if people see someone who isn't buying anything, they even make sure not to block him/her. The OP later said in a different post that it was "very narrow". I've never seen a supermarket like that before but then again, "Allkauf" stopped existing like 20 years ago and who knows how long before that he went there.

The entry is clearly marked though and it is obvious that it doesn't double as an exit. So arguing that it's different in 99% of the world doesn't score a point.

Merem··on Hello, Lenin? Berlin, 1997
Why didn't you just pass the checkout line? If you won't buy anything, you don't have to wait. So it's not surprising you got that reaction...which would be the same, regardless of whether you are in the Western or Eastern part of Germany.
Merem··on Deutsche Telekom says 900k fixed-line customers suffer outages
Yeah, but if you go with fiber, then you need the FRITZ!Box 5490 which is apparently only available through the provider (officially) but Telekom at least doesn't offer it.
Merem··on Snapchat has reportedly filed confidentially for its massive IPO
Line is also really/extremely popular in Indonesia and Taiwan.
Merem··on The Real Lesson in Grubhub CEO Telling Trump Supporters to Resign
What he says at the core is perfectly fine. His mistake is politicizing the message when there is no need for that and hinting at a connection between Trump becoming president and that the people who voted for him likely don't support what is written in the e-mail.

From an outsider's perspective: The reason for that might stem from the fact that this election was fought like a war, as in, they demonized the enemy. This was especially strong when it came to Trump. So now that the election/war is over, some people can't go back to view the "other" side in a rational way. For them, that side is still exactly everything the media told them it is and I believe that is the case here.

Merem··on Oh Snap Looks like Snapchat could be rebranding
I actually did partially witness something like that back in 2007. We were a group of students and visiting a historic site. One girl (probably) started recording while eventually, a rather fat man (which wasn't that common here) walked past her. She was talking with her friend, found something amusing and the man jumped to the conclusion that she had filmed him and laughed about his weight. So he walked up to here and slapped her phone out of her hands which fell to the ground and broke. In the end, he walked away while she remained on the spot, crying.

What I want to say, this actually does happen...though, probably more back in the day since nowadays, pretty much everyone has their phone out all the time. And you can't slap that many phones out of people's hands.

Merem··on To do in San Francisco this weekend: the first-ever roguelike celebration
For those with knowledge of the genre: What are the better, traditional roguelikes that you can recommend? I've only played Elona so far and quite liked it.
Merem··on EU's Tusk Says May Expects to Start Brexit Talks by February

Merem··on Deep Reinforcement Learning to Play StarCraft
While there are currently no professional players, as amateurs, the top guys definitely earn more than what you would get as a professional SC2 player. In July 2016, the 10th highest earned $7,699.18 USD, the highest $36,811.18 USD. And those numbers don't include ad revenue, tournament winnings or sponsorship deals.
Merem··on Deep Reinforcement Learning to Play StarCraft
Yes, it's possible. Bear in mind that not just clicks count though. July managed a peak APM of 818 in Stracraft: Brood War in an official game. The average APM of a match is usually between 300 and 500, also depending on the race that is played.
Merem··on Uber Loses at Least $1.2B in First Half of 2016
In a town here, we had basically the same with a doner kebab shop. The chain moved in, priced the doner at 1.20€ (local was 2.20€ which was already cheap), killed the competition after a few months and then raised prices to 3.50€.
Merem··on 7-Elevens Are Becoming Lifelines for Japan's Elderly
Well, Germany has so-called "Paketshops". Unfortunately, apart from gas stations and the like, those usually close at 18:00. Alternatively, there are always neighbours who can take the packet for you.
Merem··on To win at Starcraft, machines need to figure out how to lie
The article is a mess anyway since they are mixing both games up. They start talking about the franchise, then go on to Starcraft 2 and afterwards to Broodwar.
Merem··on To win at Starcraft, machines need to figure out how to lie
Flash is playing Broodwar and this is about Broodwar, not Starcraft 2. I still agree that the level of competition will be even lower by the time a proper bot will be ready (which will take a lot of years).
Merem··on Reversal of hair greying following adipose mesenchymal stem cell transplantation
Same here. I guess it's not that uncommon.
Merem··on Wikipedia Turns 15
As a reader I prefer the older design, so I was glad that they allowed me to keep using that. Other websites always force you to switch.
