The recruiting system we have is very well entrenched.
I note that when we go through this process as passive participants we further entrench the established norm.
OP - could you elaborate on how you got these 803 unique visitors within 24 hours?
One thing I've done on my site is abandon passwords. Authentication is by email (if you can receive a link you can "sign in" once with it - thereafter cookies).
This avoids the need to ask for permission (to tweet for me? really?) up front. Users can start reading and posting without giving up anything but their email.
This is not a new idea, but I think it works well to minimise barriers for potential contributors.
I can't tell, is this humour?
Coincidentally the BBC ran a series this week 'The Value of Failure.' http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03xl7ff
The series is well worth a listen - 5 x 15 minutes.
On the other hand, my comment was going to be "where's the tab completion?" so I guess my own comment counts as content-free.
Might as well add; nice job!
I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.
* It's clearly going to take more than a day to achieve a positive outcome in a system that was established over many decades
* What happens when "the day" ends?
* Since the action is framed as "the day", this is how the media will report on it - including outcomes of the day. These outcomes, whatever they are, will be packaged with the day and thus more easily dismissed than, say, "the movement" (which continues to grow) or "the tide" (that is turning) or "the big cleanup" (which must be repeated regularly)
perl -e "$_=`mode`;/ns:\s+(\d+)/;print '='x$1"On the plus side, it means that the class of employers who advertise their vacancies in this fashion become easier to identify and avoid. Or exploit.
At the end of the day, reasoning is an art, and an art worth your learning. The question is rather, whether you be capable of learning it? [0]

As a developer, I want to know if my ideas are going to fly, so when a post for a non-existent product hits HN front page I know there's at least some interest.
As a prospective user I want a chance to influence development. When a post hits front-page I get a chance to check out the idea before it is set in stone.
As a HN reader I want to see what others are thinking about and doing. It's inspiring.
