21eleven··on How malicious AI swarms can threaten democracy
I suspect this is what a node in an AI swarm looks like looks like https://www.reddit.com/u/Low-Ocelot-992/s/95ORJu8j9U
21eleven··on Cosmic: The Road to Alpha
Outside of buying a system76 laptop, is there a way to fund/donate to the Cosmic DE project?
21eleven··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
I switched to Firefox as the default mobile browser on my android phone and the experience is excellent. I have not missed Chrome one bit.
21eleven··on Firefox on the brink?
Shout out to Firefox Mobile. I have it as the default browser on my android phone and the experience is great. I don't miss chrome at all. Once you get used to the minor UI differences you won't even notice you are not on chrome.
21eleven··on Nicotine (2016)
I have the same experience, except I buy 4mg gum tablets and I chew 1/4 - 1/3 of a tab at time. 2mg and 4mg tabs are priced similarly.
21eleven··on Ask HN: How do I stop overthinking personal project management?
> And yet, the lure of the perfect system is ever present

What evidence do you have that anyone has discovered this?

My impression is that highly productive people have will and focus, not a perfect project management system.

21eleven··on How to write correct code by construction using the Coq Proof Assistant
He's giving a talk, it's for the lulz

If you are giving a talk on a theorem proving programing language you're gonna want to make it fun

21eleven··on Fish – A friendly interactive shell
Based on my experience opening a clone of the nixpkgs repo the other day... I don't think so :)
21eleven··on Fish – A friendly interactive shell
This is true. However I was calling out, wrt fish, the only two additional "plugin" type things I add in order to have a comfortable shell environment.

Fish conveniently provides history based autocomplete so I don't need to setup some plugin for that.

21eleven··on Fish – A friendly interactive shell
What I like about fish is that it provides a lot of nice-to-have ergonomic features from the get go without having to install plugins.

I add starship.rs to it and fzf integration but that's it.

21eleven··on American workers are demanding almost $80k a year to take a new job
I am not sure if this is accurate.

I think money "throughput" matters more than absolute money supply.

21eleven··on Advice for Operating a Public-Facing API
I like the detail from the top comment of replying w a 429 after a many second delay. That would mitigate any retry storm.
21eleven··on Embrace Complexity; Tighten Your Feedback Loops
"What do you know about proofs engineer?"

"Uuuh nothing, only that they are an impending thing in software :sweat-smile:"

21eleven··on Aspartame: Once More Unto the Breach
There are many food and taste related things that, if you stick with it for two or three days, end up tasting palatable.

Though I agree, aspartame, sucrose and stevia taste gross.

21eleven··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I have done the JKLI to arrows thing too (well HJKL for me), huge quality of life improvement.
21eleven··on Cryptocurrencies add nothing useful to society, says chip-maker Nvidia
We have been doing finance for centuries and governance for millennial. The internet has been around for a few decades.

If Crypto is going to have meaningful impact on either of those two domains it may take a while.

I agree there are many grifter scammy things in crypto.

Fwiw it seems plausible to me that crypto/blockchain could provide value eventually as a realtime, open, highly available database about economic activity. Reliable economic information is valuable, scarce and seldom realtime.

However this depends on economic entities having an initial reason to make certain transactions on the blockchain and it's unclear what they'd get out of doing that.

21eleven··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
Once upon a time if you wanted to study you went to the library. All the smart people were hanging out around libraries and Universities started to appear. Universities had classes and libraries.

Now we have the internet. How does this affect the value of a University education?

21eleven··on From Books to Knowledge Graphs
> The hardest challenge in my view is solving the intermediate representation issue.

Right, you'd basically be writing an interpreter for English

21eleven··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
I worked at an American company (smallish ad tech) that was fully remote and the CTO was a citizen of a LATAM country while CEO and most engineers (but not all) were USA based. Worked great.
21eleven··on Nostr.how – A Complete Guide to Nostr
Discovery could be done via "retweet"/repost functionality. Perhaps there could be some feed of most reposted over the last day.

Just spit ballin

21eleven··on Barnes and Noble's surprising turnaround
I think the Barnes and Noble turn around story is interesting and deserves our attention. What annoys me is placing this against the backdrop of the pullback in share price seen by high growth tech platforms in recent months. No stock price goes only up forever. Tech stocks like Amazon have had an extremely good past 5 years. The current pullback is not indicative of some kind of "downfall". It's just market dynamics. A firm that is doing well may generate irrational exuberance and after this irrational exuberance will come a hangover. That doesn't mean the firm is no longer doing well, it was just overpriced in the short term recently.
21eleven··on French accounting firm Mazars is pausing all its work with crypto firms
It's ironic that crypto exchanges need to use accounting firms for audits when the whole point of a blockchain is to account for things.
21eleven··on Asia’s advanced economies now have lower birth rates than Japan
I disagree. We live in the most materially abundant country in the most materially abundant time.

It is not a material problem. It is cultural. Society is feeling like a less good joyful place for children. "It takes a village to raise a child". There have never been fewer villages.

21eleven··on Unofficial guide to dotfiles on GitHub
I have my home directory as a git repo: works great, simple, no symlinking
21eleven··on Old Age and Creativity
You are an inspiration, I too want to be become a "gentleman scientist".

Also thanks for the mention of hasktorch, did not know of this interesting project.

21eleven··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Was it weight training or cardio? I suspect they are not equal when it comes to weight loss. I do a lot of cardio and while it makes me feel good, it doesn't trigger much weight loss. Weight training in my experience does help.
21eleven··on Ask HN: Any recommendation for a good History of Science book?
To Explain The World by Steven Weinberg is great, written by a Nobel laureate theoretical physicist for a popular audience.
21eleven··on Show HN: Supernotes 2 – a fast, Markdown notes app for journalling and sharing
I am developing a neovim plugin that can do this but it is not ready yet.

I think Dendron has the features you are looking for.

21eleven··on Peloton replaces CEO and lays off 2,800 people
I have had my Peloton for a year now. I use it every day. It has transformed my health and my relationship w fitness.

When I am on vacation I do Peloton audio based outdoor runs to keep my Peloton workout streak alive.

21eleven··on Decentralized Woo Hoo
I agree, you wouldn't want a world where either of those two scenarios you mention are possible. But are those examples inescapable risks inherent to having smart contracts? Or does the design of current smart contracts lack maturity in such a way that allows for problems similar to the ones you mention? Maybe better smart contract design could arise that prevents these issues.
