zandorg··on What it was like shooting the movie Sneakers
In the DVD commentary, they mention 'some software' which they used to find the anagrams. I have a feeling this is 'NAMEGRAM' (ie, avaiable around 1992) which you can still find online.
zandorg··on The DOD had two "better-than-Hubble" space telescopes just sitting around.
And that pop culture was written by Carl Sagan, who is no stranger to this subject!
zandorg··on Meet the tireless entrepreneur who squatted at AOL
See film 'Secret of My Success' with Michael J. Fox for similiar plot. Great film.
zandorg··on Lego - the Largest Tyre Manufacturer in the World
Tyre is English.
zandorg··on Is there a modern browser that runs on Windows 3.1?
Perhaps they could reverse-engineer the Windows 3.1 software and get it to run on XP?

Can't tell from the details why the software won't do Windows XP.

zandorg··on Space Quest creators create kickstarter for a new Space Adventure
It'd be nice if the Infocom guys could get a text adventure on Kickstarter!
zandorg··on Dell Announces A Linux Laptop Designed For Developers
Running SUSE 9.1 on a Dell Precision M70. Huge screen works fine in Suse, and as I use an external PS2 keyboard, no chance of accidentally tapping the mouse pad. Wifi works fine on M70's internal wifi card. Great cheap Linux laptop.
zandorg··on John Peel’s Record Collection to be Made Public
As far as I know, the Peel Sessions are (c) BBC Radio, because they were recorded in the radio studio...
zandorg··on The Geeks Who Saved Prince of Persia’s Source Code From Digital Death
Have you got the URL of any websites that offer such an alignment tool? Preferably done using PC software and the XA1541 cable.
zandorg··on The Geeks Who Saved Prince of Persia’s Source Code From Digital Death
A few months ago, I found some C64 5 1/4 inch disks in my Mum's loft. I didn't need "crates of Apple II's", just a 1541 drive from Ebay and a XA1541 cable to connect to my laptop's parallel port.

I worked out a system whereby I'd read a disk, then when the drive head got magnetic filth on it, I'd swab the disk head with isopropyl alcohol.

Anyway, I recovered about 1/2 of the disks with no errors, recovering 4 short stories - thought lost forever - and 52 Boulderdash 4 caves I did with a friend. Also, a sampler/sequencer.

My point is that the C64's 1541 disk drive has its own ROM, so you don't need a C64 to read its disks!

zandorg··on Tiny computer or huge Palm III PDA: $25
I wrote a novel on an Amstrad NC-100. It had a 1MB PCMCIA flash disk (from an Apple Newton!) and I saved a chapter at a time onto the disk (it only had 64KB of RAM) and I installed a new, clearer screen in it. Nice little machine!
zandorg··on Berkeley DB Architecture - NoSQL Before NoSQL Was Cool
Is there an alternative to Berkeley DB which has a hash database file on disk? Rather than in RAM? The problem is I use BDB 1.86 on Windows, because it's free, but the DB size is limited to 2GB. I want to use an alternative which is just as fast and pretty much the same interface.
zandorg··on Don't say you weren't warned
Ted Nelson was saying pretty much the same thing at about the same time!
zandorg··on Stratolaunch Systems: Paul Allen launches commercial space project
Just pointing out that Musk is not necessarily a 'billionaire' in actual net worth.
zandorg··on What Facebook, Google+ and YouTube would have looked like in 1997
It should say "RealVideo", too, actually, as that was the format of the day.
zandorg··on How Google Inflates AdWords Bids
I got a $45 voucher (in the UK; £30) and I spoke to a rep on the phone. He said do this, do that, yet about 2 months later and my spent is £10 for that period! I'm actually disillusioned because I'm not getting enough clicks!

My theory is that Bing is taking more and more clicks away, so I'll have to find another way of promoting my business/projects.

zandorg··on EMI music is sold to Universal. We're down to three major labels.
Soon after Apple (Computer) set up business, the Beatles' record label (Apple) asked Apple to change their business name. They didn't, so Apple (Computer) signed a contract with Apple to never enter the music industry.

They broke this twice. Once in the 80s when they released music hardware, and in the 2000's when they founded iTunes. The Beatles weren't pleased about this contract breaking, so they denied permission to distribute the Beatles on iTunes.

Well, you patent it.
zandorg··on Atari Archives: BASIC Computer Games
Is that Bill Gates right of the robot?
zandorg··on MUSE: Relive and analyze your entire email archive
It can output single emails to folders named after months (eg, 2011_10_18), which I think is MailDir.
zandorg··on MUSE: Relive and analyze your entire email archive
If you're interested, we could talk over email.

Do you have an email address or do you want me to post my email address? Or not? ;-)

zandorg··on MUSE: Relive and analyze your entire email archive
I wrote software which scans a hard disk for email in any of 6 formats, converts them to Mbox (eg, standard, with emails one after another in plaintext), creates 2 indexes (full-text and SQL) then lets you search all your emails with a Lucene query (full text of email bodies) or an SQL query (MySql or PostGres or SQLite - SQL database of common email headers). It doesn't run on 'the cloud'; it's a Windows application.

An example search is 'All emails from "geocities.com" between March 2009 and April 2009, with attachments.

I haven't found anyone who wants such a program. Anyone here interested?

zandorg··on PE - the Portable Executable Format on Windows
I found out from reading the source to Wordpad, that on Windows 95/98, Wordpad would reject ANY file starting 'MZ' as 'executable'. Quite amusing.
zandorg··on Why Can't We Drink Sea Water?
In the film Waterworld, they have a device to purify urine - you crank the handle - but funnily enough they aren't using the device to clean seawater. Just another plot hole...
zandorg··on Why Amazon buying webOS from HP is a no-brainer
I saw a grey-scale style calendar (branded with a pharmaceutical brand) in a pharmacy the other day. I asked if it was an e-ink display and they said yes. Then they realised it was just an old-style flip-page calendar which LOOKED like e-ink.
zandorg··on John Carmack coded Quake on a 28-inch 16:9 1080p monitor in 1995
I like the way it looks like his hands are a blur, for moving so fast.
zandorg··on Stack-checking a program... that will execute in orbit
I just rewrite the stack function to use heap (eg, a queue) instead of stack.
zandorg··on Saipan claims ComputerLand founder owes taxes
Ah, a blast from the past. I was reading Once Upon a Time in Computerland by Steven Levy. Not a bad book, but I wondered what happened to Millard. Now I know!
zandorg··on LucasFilm Tells Darth Vader that Return of the Jedi Hasn’t Made a Profit
I was expecting a video: 'nooooo!'
zandorg··on Crypt of Civilization
Stick a computer on the moon, put a mirror of the Web on it, and let it serve queries over shortwave radio. Then all a fallen civilisation has to do is re-discover radio, to get access to the world's knowledge.
