NIH: Many Remondites live in the "bubble" where technology from the outside doesn't exist or doesn't matter. (It reminds me of the hard core Republican base.) This extends to much of the user base as well. There is a strong denial of OSS and there used to be taunting of Apple. (Until the iPhone kicked the smartphone market in gear.)
Future: Redmond has some serious issues to deal with: dysfunctional management, growing OSS usage, rejection of Win8/Xbox One and how to get people to use Azure when it's known you are the NSA's bitch.
They have been turned into sheep over the last 6 decades by the media.
Have you purchased a firearm in the US from a licensed dealer recently? There's paper/digital record of most firearm purchase in most cases, with a few exceptions. There's a cursory background check ran too.
(In the case of most US citizens the government doesn't care about small arms. Most are used for sporting, hunting or deterrence.)
(Microsoft's TechEd had a big push towards Azure this last week. Their timing sucks... Sorry about their bad luck...)
Two of the most expensive weddings, ($200K+), I've been invite to or a groomsman in, both ended in divorce within 2 years.
From the asshole that parks his Hummer sideways in 2 handicap spots to stupid brats that trash resturants and laugh at the staff, it's really stupid behavior. The "old money" knows better than this and mostly stays off the radar of the rest of the public.
:)
There's a large number corporate data jobs in the area needing to be filled. (Analyst, programmer, DBA, warehouse, BIG DATA superstars, whatever...)
The Dallas Morning Snooze is not exactly a great source of any business info or news in North Texas. There's a variety of other sources that try to fill the voids.
Over beers a few of my mates came up with a system like DNS to map a mailing domain for an individual/organization to a physical location. But after much discussion we decided it was just easier to let the geo-challenged to lease postal boxes with saner locations.
As a developer, if I'm having to shift focus, I'm going to explore alternatives outside the Redmond garden that give me more control and cost less. As much as I love VS and SQL Server, a growing number of my clients/projects can do equally well or better with OSS solutions.
This is true in many other areas of life. I found there's plenty of old farts in amateur radio and other hobbies, you just have to find the ones that are interested in mentoring and ignore the assholes that shit on everyone.
My primary development box is a fully loaded 17" laptop. Tablets are too small screen wise and performance wise when doing real work either in the OSS or Redmond realm. (I deal with tons of Data and run a few VMs as well.)
