xela79··on Are SSDs more reliable than hard drives? (2021)
> An SSD that fails is likely to go into a read-only mode that still allows you to recover your data. The only way to recover your data from a HDD failure is to find a data recovery business.

SSD failure in my experience both professional and private is definitely what you write there. SSD failure just make the system no longer recognize the drive. No read only mode to speak of

where as a failing hard drive has a bit more survival luck, also the data recovery at a very high success rate when going to a third party

xela79··on Our phones are killing our ability to feel sexy (2024)
it's as "sexy" as reading a book for an hour or more every day. oh wait... I didn't know that using a phone or reading a book was meant to be sexy for others when a person uses a phone or reads a book. woopsie
xela79··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
put your monitor in front of a nice bland white wall, put a led strip at the back of your monitor that lights up the wall; this is reduces the contrast between the lightening from your monitor vs what's around, reducing eye strain a lot

no lights shining into your monitor , those just create reflections and make the screen harder to see

use the same for your TV, Philips Hue TVs are a good example on how to make the screen bigger and reduce eye strain, similmar things can be accomplished with that led strip

xela79··on Bose buys McIntosh, storied maker of high-end luxury audio equipment
> I get why they want to be in cars like Lamborghinis. People who buy a car like that have no problem spending a lot on the sound system. But the cars are so noisy inside when driven, you aren't going to be able to tell a McIntosh system apart from an AC Delco.

actually, those high end cars have excellent noise insulation, you you are definitely going to appreciate high end audio speakers, in fact the motor engine is muffled something too much...

Think I read somewhere where they overdid the sound insulation in a prototype leading to issues changing gears and running the engine in the red cause it couldn't be heard anymore . Using active noise cancelletion inside the cabin

xela79··on I got everything off the cloud: I'm now paying 10x LESS money
it really depends on the scope of what you run in the cloud and what kind of support/uptime you expect/require.

if you're going to run your own servers with same level of support it will definitely be much higher than $120/month

but this is, alas, not the tech issue, but a more low level understanding the reasoning of why cloud is more interesting for certain use cases, and on prem better for other.

it is definitely not a one solution fits all

edit: https://rameerez.com/how-i-exited-the-cloud/

oh wait, he did not get anything "off the cloud" he is still running on a "cloud" based solution, just a different company.

> Hey Raymond,

Thank you so much for your kind words about my post on revamping my homelab! It’s always a pleasure to hear from someone who appreciates the journey of continuous improvement. Your message truly brightened my day.

Indeed, using Deno Fresh for my blog has been an exciting adventure. The process of managing updates and deployments, while sometimes challenging, has been incredibly rewarding. It’s like tending to a garden, where each update is a new seed planted, and every deployment is a blossom of progress. The satisfaction of seeing everything come together is unparalleled.

Your introduction of Wisp has certainly piqued my interest. A CMS that simplifies content management sounds like a dream come true, especially for someone like me who is always looking for ways to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. The name “Wisp” itself evokes a sense of lightness and ease, which is exactly what one hopes for in a content management system.

I would love to learn more about Wisp and how it could potentially fit into my workflow. The idea of having a tool that can make content management more intuitive and less time-consuming is very appealing. Could you share more details about its features and how it stands out from other CMS options? I’m particularly interested in how it handles updates and deployments, as these are crucial aspects for me.

Thank you again for reaching out and for thinking of me. I’m looking forward to hearing more about Wisp and exploring the possibilities it offers. Let’s continue this conversation and see where it leads!

Best regards, Tim

xela79··on User is locked out every day when she goes to lunch
OG contents were deleted , it was:

See this post: AD User Constantly Being Locked ( https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1cb45bi/ad_user_c... )

We're absolutely stumped on this one user who gets locked out almost every day. We've tried a bunch of stuff, including many of the solutions offered in the thread above.

Almost every day, around 11.30, she presses Win + L to lock her screen and then goes to lunch. When she comes back her account is locked, and she has to wait up to 15min before she can log in again.

We've tried...

Checking for network drives with old credentials. There are none.

Removing all credentials in the credentials manager. No help.

Giving her a new computer and wiping the old one to completely eliminate any traces of old credentials. No help.

Wiping her work phone and setting it up again from scratch, also to eliminate any old credentials. No help.

After every one of the above steps, she would get locked out again the next day.

I've checked event logs and also sent them to our second line support, but they can't see anything out of the ordinary.

She has no other devices. When I look her up, only one laptop and one iPhone come up.

Also, she did admit to using Enter to wake her screen, so we explained why that's a bad idea. She now uses the arrow keys to wake her computer. Still gets locked out.

Please help me, I'm losing my mind.

EDIT

Wow, this got way more attention than I expected. Thank you very much. I'm at home right now. I'll through all your suggestions at work tomorrow.

Some clarifications:

She has a work phone. There are no personal devices on the work wifi.

I'm only a first line supporter. I don't have access to AD and I unfortunately don't know what many of your suggestions mean, such as PDC emulator or SSRS. Our second line people are very cool, though. I'll write a short list of your suggestions and send it to them.

xela79··on BYD Launches Hybrids with 1,300-Mile Driving Range
same I get with Mercedes CLA 250E over the last 40000km, drove 25640km electric only, good for average fuel consumption of 2.9L/100km

and that 250E battery is good for 60km range in summer, 40km in winter

xela79··on BYD achieves 1,300-mile driving range with latest PHEVs

xela79··on After Furiosa flops, Hollywood could be facing a biblically disastrous summer
this I think is exactly the reason, I was going 3-4x times a week to the movies in the 90s, but once I had more pocket change and "spending" money, really started investing in quality home theater gear, and over the years it fulfills 90% of my movie watching needs. Reducing my "going to the movies" to twice a year, if at all.

there is also so much content available, that there is no real urgency to watch the movie at release. "Waiting" for it be available on bluray/streaming, is not even "waiting" at all.

xela79··on Older gamers are a growth opportunity for AAA publishers
> This has been challenging to sit around the PS5 to update the system, then the firmware of the controller (!), and then the game itself. Annoying.

if you properly configure your PS5 setup; the system auto updates when you're not using it, the games are updated automatically. The only thing is the controller firmware update which happens maybe twice a year if at all.

I've bought a PS5 and got myself the PS+ subscriptions, and have been having a blast with pickup and play games, all different genres, and the instant resume from sleep also lends to quick gaming sessions.

xela79··on EU data shows PHEVs emit 350% more CO2 than tested values
PHEV with 230BHP on ICE motor only does 39mpg

with mixed driving in winter with charging 78mpg

with mixed driving in summer with charging 117mpg

xela79··on EU data shows PHEVs emit 350% more CO2 than tested values
I find the EV only range of those PHEV abysmal, at 60km in the summer with this Mercedes PHEV we have (and 30km in the winter), it hardly covers commute. If they at least remade the balance to have at least 100km in winter for range, that the % of EV only driving would skyrocket.
xela79··on Unplug Your Laptop Now, or It Will Stay Plugged in Forever
^this guy batteries.

but seriously, when they announced EV with lithium batteries, all I could think of was the baby sitting for batteries. Look at all the intelligence that goes into those EV car setups.

xela79··on Unplug Your Laptop Now, or It Will Stay Plugged in Forever
Dell has advanced power management options in the BIOS, I set it to keep the battery charged at 70%, which is ideal for lithium batteries. And you set a custom schedule on days you need the battery charged at 100% so that you can take the laptop with you at full capacity. It's not rocket science, and definitely something anybody reading this site should be able to figure out for their make/model. For MAC there is a similar app that resides in top system tray where you can also define max charge. (https://apphousekitchen.com/ )
