xela79··on Why some people mow a lawn better than others
they did not end where they started, not even close, so it's not the ideal path, cause now you still need to walk the mower to the shed. and that's why some people are more efficient than others.

their ideal path leaves you at the other side of the yard.

xela79··on Most countries provide between 20 and 40 paid days off
> higher wages than Europe and lower taxation rates.

ah yes live to work. Not work to live right?

xela79··on Most countries provide between 20 and 40 paid days off
> employment earns 7 sick days

ugh, "sick days", what an absurd concept. If you are too unwell to work, you don't go to work , of course, and get paid while at home, until you're healed. Not 7 days, not 2 days, just the amount of days required. putting a number on that. ugh

and 11 vacation days. Wauw. After a decades of working in Europe you can get a good amount of holidays. in 2025 I had 49 day of which 20 are that minimum you start out with. Every overtime and outside business hour call also gets recovered, that's an extra 3 days so we've passed 50.

but what else is new, in the 80 and 90s workers in US were boasting about doing 80hrs of work each week... like wtf :). They live to work, I prefer to work to live life.

xela79··on Lidl Introduces the European Payment Method Wero in Germany
> It's not like iDeal where you can just use your bank's regular login method to pay; this requires making a big tech account to download some app where maybe it then works if it likes your device.

in Belgium wero doesn't need any "big tech account" or whatever that means. it's natively build into banking apps , eg: https://www.kbc.be/retail/en/products/payments/self-banking/... https://www.bnpparibasfortis.be/en/public/individuals/daily-... etc

and since BNP is french, most likely for France peeps same (i)deal

xela79··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
I find that Deepseek Pro to be below Sonnet 4.6 for much of the coding/review/executing tasks from plan. The only good thing it has going is the price. It will is cheaper for it to crunch through your well worked out implementation plans, it's slower, makes more errors, needs more tokens to fix those. And even at that increased spent it does deliver in the end. More tokens, lower cost, slower.

I use it as something that sits right below Sonnet for daily tasks that can be run in loops with validation checks, perfect. Anything more advanced...it just doesn't cut it.

Same experience with z-ai glm 5.1 btw... don't know what system prompt magic antrophic set in front of their Sonnet 4.6, but it does execute tasks efficiently.

claiming any of these deepseek models are close to opus is a bit optimistic

exactly. If you buy a music CD and lose that CD, while you have the license of the music on that CD, you should not get a free CD as replacement.

if you buy a software license, at least store the install binary?

xela79··on How Quake.exe got its TCP/IP stack
and let's not forget QuakeWorld that introduced latency compensation, allowing you to have an OK experience with up to 200ms ping, where as the normal Quake TCP/IP stack was basically unplayable with anything over 70-80ms. https://quakewiki.org/wiki/QuakeWorld

my first multiplayer Quake was with Qtest in February 1996 using a null modem cable between two machines, and later on using coax cables and IPX in DOS

getting a multiplayer game running was a tech feat compared to the plug & play nature of things now. the learning curve is gone now.

that is all you heard in the 80-90s, people over the pond showing off how many hours per week they worked. like... how is that something to be proud of? So wauw, you spend 12hrs+ per day working , had no free evenings, zero paid holidays. And that is supposed to impress who?

xela79··on The RSS feed reader landscape
a RSS reader should allow for quick view of titles & summaries so you can decide to click through or not, inoreader free version scratches that itch. Don't need any fancy features, or social stuff. sure it's not self hosted, but it's just a collection of rss feeds, if it's down for a while, nothing big of value was lost, a small ompl backup of the feeds is all you need to get started elsewhere, self hosted or not.

that fact that in EU power isn't cheap... is also a main reason for keeping total power draw as low as possible.

xela79··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
So I just figured out a workaround that actually works! At least until Microsoft puts out a new Windows installer that fixes this,

here's what you can do:

First, make sure you unplug your ethernet cable or turn off WiFi before you start installing Windows. This way your computer isn't connected to the internet during setup.

When you get to that screen where it's asking you to sign in with a Microsoft account (you know, the annoying one from the post), here's the trick: press SHIFT and F10 at the same time. This opens up a command prompt window.

Then just type this command: start ms-cxh:localonly and press Enter. It should bring up an option to make a local account instead! Just fill in a username and password like the old days.

After you finish the setup and get to your desktop, you can connect back to the internet and download all the updates.
