xbryanx··on A ‘Darker Narrative’ of Print's Future From Clay Shirky
Your points about companies splitting TV from newspaper, makes me wonder if we'll ever see a periodical journalism outfit grown out of a streaming provider like Netflix or Amazon Prime.

`Netflix premiers Vice News Nightly`

xbryanx··on A ‘Darker Narrative’ of Print's Future From Clay Shirky
We (my partner and I) subscribe to the Sunday only print edition, which gives us digital access. We shouldn't really be considered "print subscribers" in a traditional sense. 90% of the time we scan the magazine and maybe read one article in the paper. Then straight to the recycle. The majority of our consumption, and engagement with ads, happens throughout the week as we share a single digital account. The physical paper is more of a souvenir, or possibly a house decoration, than a means of engaging with the stories in the paper.

I'm curious how this compares to Zabbix's agent and server. Does PCP give you finer grained details, or is it possibly more lightweight?

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

I used to use this quote all the time too...until I realized it originally meant something entirely different.

This week's Lively Morgue features this picture:

I wonder if that's a car Paternoster...

xbryanx··on Where's the Generic Insulin?
There was a good summary story on this on NPR this morning as well:

xbryanx··on Leap: Your daily commute redesigned
How in the world do you keep from falling on that thing when it comes to a stop? I'm a big fan of always sitting at the back of the bus. Whenever I am nearing my stop on a traditional city bus I really need to use all the hand holds to get to the front or side door to keep from falling down. This thing looks like it has none of those.
xbryanx··on Google Makani – Wind Energy Kites
I'm with you, but I'm a power user. I wonder if anyone has any sentiment analysis showing whether the average web user likes this sort of thing, or finds it annoying.
xbryanx··on Poor Kids of Silicon Valley
Are you suggesting they move to Latvia? The country just below us(US) in childhood poverty rates?
xbryanx··on Show HN: Ghostnote – Contextual notes and todo app
This looks fantastic.

I watched through the video and looked on the feature page, but couldn't figure out two key things:

- Is there a way to do a text search on all your notes?

- Are your notes saved in any sort of exportable format?

xbryanx··on Intel Compute Stick
This could be a direct competitor to the digital signage folks over at Brightsign - http://www.brightsign.biz/digital-signage-products/overview/
xbryanx··on How Products Are Made
I'm not exactly sure but this looks like this is made by a company called Advameg, Inc. They've quite a few other sites that might be of interest to HN readers:

xbryanx··on Github may block content if they receive a valid request from Roskomnadzor
The concept you describe is a philosophy in and of itself. Sounds like a great place to me, but I think it's fair to say that at least some people on this planet would rather live under a different set of governing principles. At a higher level, I want to live in a world where they can live in that different society, and we can live in ours.

The good folks at MapBox have a nice article on the challenges related to working with these great but under-resourced data portals:

xbryanx··on GitHub Student Developer Pack
This is great. On an unrelated note, I wanted to give GitHub a big high-five for their non-profit organizational discounts. Tech companies that provide non-profit discounts really help non-profits where technology expenses are often under-appreciated and underfunded.
xbryanx··on Hacker's Guide to Setting Up Your Mac
And you can bootstrap that part of what you need for Boxen with one command:

xbryanx··on NOAA View Data Exploration Tool
I help run the Science on a Sphere systems at the Science Museum of Minnesota. As a matter of fact we just hosted the user's conference, bringing people together from all over the US, Mexico, and various parts of Asia who run these systems. It's a fun network of scientist, educators, and museum exhibits people.

Because the network is aimed at a technically and scientifically diverse community community the data catalog is actually well organized and mostly easy to understand. I'm continually telling data viz friends to check out the resources in there for their non sphere projects:

http://sos.noaa.gov/Datasets/index.html

Fun fact: NOAA just installed the 100th SOS system.

xbryanx··on Sodaconstructor: Interactive creations using masses and springs (2007)
Blast from the past. We actually built Soda Constructor into our science museum traveling exhibit on robots (Robots and Us), way back in the early 2000s:

xbryanx··on Open Source Madness
Does this mean that if I currently work at a non-profit developing open source software--not our primary goal, just sharing tools we make--that I'm jeopardizing our 501(c)(3) status?
xbryanx··on Mapcode – A short address for any location on Earth
This is neat, but I am confused why you wouldn't want to just tie location to geography and not country (aka nationality, a squishy and shifting idea). Why not just use UTM?

xbryanx··on Geologic Map of Mars
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but here's some relevant explanation of their color choices which largely seem to have been chosen for consistency with previous publications:

xbryanx··on The FCC is so swamped with net neutrality comments, it’s extending the deadline
You're right. It isn't enough. But neither is silence.

It's certainly worth my 95 seconds to participate in this democracy in some fashion. Wouldn't you be outraged that the FCC didn't listen to you when you spoke, rather than being outraged that they didn't listen to you when you were silent?

xbryanx··on Hydra: A lightweight OS X window manager with a powerful API
This looks great, and reminds me of AutoIt on Windows in some ways.
xbryanx··on Web Starter Kit
I was really hoping "Delete key friendly" meant that they weren't forcing Chrome to bind delete to the back function any longer.
xbryanx··on 3% use IE9 and 14% have a disability. Why do we only cater for the former?
It's important to remind developers and clients in the United States that some aspects of web accessibility are required by federal law:

http://www.ada.gov/

Does the ADA apply to the web? Yes. This has been supported in court, when the National Federation of the Blind successfully sued Target over their e-commerce site:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Federation_of_the_Bli...

The ADA is a great example of important legislation that protects the rights of a minority group that is regularly ignored by the market.

xbryanx··on All of Bach
I know it's heretical but I just can't get past his audible humming/moaning. I tried...I wish I could. I love it when Keith Jarrett does it, but for some reason Gould's voice just pollutes the music for me.

xbryanx··on It's Different for Girls
You (and me) are in the most powerful group to do something about this issue.

First off, check that you are never participating in the behavior you don't want to see. I'm amazed how often I have to check myself.

Second, use your position of power as a white male to call out other men, privately or otherwise, when you see them behaving like any of the reprobates in this article. You'll be amazed at how much weight your voice can have in these situations.

Third, proactively advocate for women.
