xbryanx··on Disruption with Some GitHub Services
I spent a bunch of time during the outage last week setting up forgejo and some custom action runners. At the time, I was worried I was wasting time and getting distracted from my real work...alas, I guess not. Gonna finish up that work and complete the move today.
xbryanx··on AI agent hacks gym to get its owner spot in pilates class
A key question though...who is the legal agent in this case? The human prompter? The AI agent? The company who hosts the agent? The company who own the agent?
xbryanx··on Seedless Blackberries and Cherries That Grow on Bushes
Seedless cherries would dramatically increase my children's consumption and reduce my "your gonna choke on that pit" anxiety. A win win.
xbryanx··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
If you’re in the Minneapolis / Saint Paul metro area and care about trees, you might like my recent project: https://msptrees.com

On a walk and wonder what species is shading you? Curious if the city thinks your boulevard tree is as sickly as you think it is? Find your spot on MSP Trees.

It's been fun working with some public city data and thinking about how to normalize information across different municipalities. Community doesn't end at city boundaries, but municipal GIS data systems sure do. I'm hoping to build tools like this for some more areas if I can track the data down.

xbryanx··on Herdr: One terminal to rule them all
I wish Claude's remote control sessions were longer running. If I forget about a conversation it's been cognitively difficult for me to track down which tmux tab = the correct remote control session in the Claude GUI. Remote control does come in super handy for pasting images in when some shell environments where pasting doesn't work for...reasons. The output in the GUI is also so much easier to read.
xbryanx··on 5k menus from the New York Public Library’s Buttolph Collection (1880-1920)
The prevalence of green turtle soup was surprising. I assumed this was a reference to a flavor or style…but nope, it’s just green turtle meat.
xbryanx··on Improving my focus by giving up my big monitor
Aerospace helps deliver some of this functionality for you. Although the keyboard shortcuts take a little while to learn.
xbryanx··on Apple Business
Totally agree on the hidden costs. We've seen some great value in going with Mosyle for this. Lots cheaper, and it "just works."

xbryanx··on Trevor Milton is raising funds for a new jet he claims will transform flying
Well, here we all are clicking the link and engaging in a discussion on the loathsome creep. Attention, attention.

Thanks! I will share this.
xbryanx··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans.
Great message...but gosh, can someone throw 15px of padding on that <td>? I know HN is supposed to be minimal, but I had to check the URL to confirm that this was a real page because of the odd design.
xbryanx··on I don't know Apple's endgame for the Fn/Globe key–or if Apple does
Agreed, but my biggest problem with this, is that most external keyboards don't really have an equivalent (at least in the some location). So while I have Fn mapped to my speech to text tool (Hex), I have to figure out something else when I'm at my desktop keyboard.
xbryanx··on How Big Diaper absorbs billions of extra dollars from American parents
My primary point is that it's not a slam dunk for either side. Nothing's obvious about the "impact" here. I you're interested in picking a product based on its environmental impact, there are going to be many factors to consider. Just peruse this 200 page report from the UK government on the subject:

xbryanx··on How Big Diaper absorbs billions of extra dollars from American parents
> But cloth diapers are obviously much better for the environment

What about this is obvious? Water usage, transportation, fabrication factors, different usage patterns; seems like there are many things to tease apart here.

xbryanx··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
Would love to do that if it could support two additional displays with the lid open.
xbryanx··on Start all of your commands with a comma (2009)
Love Alfred Snippets for this same text expander need.
xbryanx··on Gemini CLI tips and tricks for agentic coding
It would/will be interesting to see this modified to include Antigravity alongside Gemini CLI.
xbryanx··on At Least 13 People Died by Suicide Amid U.K. Post Office Scandal, Report Says
> in no quantifiable way whatsoever

You may disagree with my assertion, but there has been considerable research into the role of media and reporting in suicide, indicating that contagion is real and that words matter when reporting on these issues.

xbryanx··on At Least 13 People Died by Suicide Amid U.K. Post Office Scandal, Report Says
> please don't say they died by suicide

I encourage you to read the current thinking on this evolving language, which offers some explanation as to why we're moving away from damaging language like "committing" suicide.

xbryanx··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
How do plus codes handle elevations(floors) or rooms within a building? It seems that the Japan Post system allows for this.
xbryanx··on Show HN: I rewrote my Mac Electron app in Rust
Very nice!

What were your most valuable resources when moving from Electron to Tauri?

Are there any guides out there on the equivalencies between the two systems?

SimpleHuman trashbags do the same thing. When you pull the 5th last bag, it has a big tag reminding you to order more.
xbryanx··on An artist who trained rats to trade in foreign-exchange markets (2014)
The Navy's Marine Mammal Program advertises quite an interesting array of mine detection techniques using Dophins. If this is what they publicly share, who knows what they're training animals to do in secret.

This reminds me of the recent New Yorker article on indigenous Pacific Northwest oral histories about climactic flooding that can be directly correlated to ancient written Japanese tsunami records.

xbryanx··on ChatGPT Plus
I would gladly pay $20/mo for a high quality monitor service that randomly stopped by and improved the display on my desk periodically.

Reminds me of the Built to Spill lyric. “It's barely yours on loan What you think you own”

xbryanx··on I have reached Vim nirvana
