xNeil··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
That doesn't mean they're not in their infancy. I take infancy to mean they have not achieved their potential // can be vastly improved or made powerful, as opposed to taking infancy to literally mean 'young' (as in, a period of time).
xNeil··on Google will retire Gmail’s Basic HTML view in January 2024
Australia also seems to be a terrible place for privacy, at least policy-wise.
xNeil··on Ask HN: What are some communities like HN?
Every forum has an overwhelming bias. You just choose what bias you wish to consume.

xNeil··on The daguerreotype is famous – why not the calotype?
Every single time I see JSTOR, I remember Aaron Swartz. Rest in Peace.
xNeil··on iOS 17 is available today
Yeah personal and business seems to be the best.
xNeil··on What is RISC-V, and why we're unlocking its potential
You're talking about best laptops. Parent said physically best. I don't think the answer is subjective - Apple most definitely makes far better laptops physically.

The M2 Air is astonishingly light, while being made of metal, as opposed to the ThinkPad's (cheap imo, but subject to debate) plastic. Don't see what the argument is.

xNeil··on Elon Musk went from superhero to supervillain
Patently false. He refused to enable the use of satellites - he did not disable existing satellite connections. Two very different things.

xNeil··on FAA closes SpaceX Starship mishap investigation
Yes, Tesla isn't 'open source' in any traditional sense of the word - you're absolutely right. All I'm trying to say is that what he's done with Tesla's patents is far more 'open' than choosing to aggressively police those that wish to use those patents. Thus, I think if he wanted to 'open source' (read: open up to a certain degree) hyper loop's patents, it would be entirely feasible for him to do so, since he has a track record of having done so in the past. No point in being pedantic over 'open source' - just see it as 'opening up to a certain degree'.
xNeil··on FAA closes SpaceX Starship mishap investigation
Yes, but he most definitely has the money to buy the patent and then open source it. Sort of like he did with Tesla.
xNeil··on An effort to ban caste discrimination in California has touched a nerve
Yes, but that's because the caste system was prevalent in India. It's really not a thing in the US, and so codifying it seems to give it some sort of legitimacy or something.
xNeil··on My editor trashed my inquiry into child sexual abuse. Now I know why.
You're either reading Russian propaganda or American Propaganda. If you live in the US, which one will affect you more? (Genuinely asking)
xNeil··on Why Is .US Being Used to Phish So Many of Us?
OT, but I find it interesting that one wrong move can erase hundreds of good moves (one mistake can erase 20 years of goodwill).
xNeil··on Doug Lenat has died
That sounds awesome! Was coming back to Cycorp to permanently work ever in the works for you? Or did you think the intern was nice but you didn't want a career in the field?

Also - what exactly did you do in the internship as a 17 year old - what skills did you have?

xNeil··on Organic Maps
Thanks for the work you and your community is doing! Quick question - why did you fork maps.me in the first place? And how do you make money?
xNeil··on X violated its own policy by blocking First Amendment group’s ads
Are humans under any obligation to comply with anything?
xNeil··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
You can fill out official government documents in WeChat is entirely different from the government endorsing it. The US government can use AWS without endorsing everyone buy from Amazon.
xNeil··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
>selling services to government agencies

What in the world makes you think that? Musk is pretty clearly against this government, and openly so - if he wants to sell services to government agencies, he's definitely on the wrong path.

xNeil··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
But WeChat does have competition in China.
xNeil··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
WeChat isn't forced on the people by the CCP by any means.
xNeil··on Tesla ordered by auto regulators to provide data on ‘Elon mode’ configuration
In the case of Twitter/X, 'Elon mode' was simply a testing configuration. I don't see why it would be any different in Tesla.
xNeil··on Alexandria: A minimalistic cross-platform eBook reader
sure, but what percentage of their products have they shut down?
xNeil··on The mobile game funding a revolution in Myanmar
> Ko Toot said he created characters based on real people fighting the military, including doctors, Muslims and members of the LGBT community.

Funny how one of these social groups is actively hostile against another.

xNeil··on How to lose weight in 4 easy steps (2015)
I don't know much about this stuff, but could anyone explain why willpower isn't enough? Like - isn't this something that is in our control?

Also - if you don't have the willpower to lose weight, wouldn't taking weight loss drugs put you at risk of relying on meds for everything? (Including stuff you might have the willpower for - now that you've tried meds, why would you ever do stuff the hard way?)

xNeil··on The EU's war on behavioral advertising
You must accept their Terms of Service to use them. These terms of service state that they will show you advertising, and in order to use the website, you must agree to these terms. They have very clear consent.
xNeil··on Untouchable number
Reincarnation, maybe?
xNeil··on The EU's war on behavioral advertising
The only non-consenting advertising I can think of is public billboards - and I believe those should be banned, most definitely.

Every single other type of advertising requires your explicit consent. YouTube? Google? Newspapers? All have your consent.

xNeil··on DOJ sues SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring
Per the website linked, asylees and refugees do not come under the export control act, as opposed to citizens of other nations. The timing of the lawsuit does seem interesting though.
xNeil··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
What? This guy has a female COO at SpaceX, female CEO at X, female chairman at Tesla - what on Earth are you talking about?
xNeil··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
That's nice to hear - I didn't use Twitter in 2009!

As I've said earlier - the groupthink on HN is at astoundingly high levels nowadays. First everyone said subscriptions are the way to go. Seriously - this was unanimous. And absolutely everyone on HN would complain about their linear timeline being taken away.

Now that Elon has bought the company, he's introduced a (good) subscription based product (while simultaneously keeping free access), and he's reintroduced the linear timeline. And HN can't seem to stop whining.

Honestly considering leaving this site - I can't seem to find any genuine debates any more. Not that it has anything to do with HN - what do I know, this perception of HN of mine might just be me seeing the platform through heavy bias. But the perception is there.
