xNeil··on Tesla offers mammoth $1T pay package to Musk, sets lofty targets
>You can't possibly believe Musk's fantasies after a couple decades of hilarious (and occasionally dangerous) lies.

Eh, betting against Musk generally seems to be a losing proposition. Starlink alone would have given me faith in his abilities, what Tesla's done with Models 3 and Y and SpaceX with Falcon 9 gives me all the more reason to believe him. Yes, despite the absurd timelines, which I'm generally okay with. (Not OP)

>...Tesla is not the winner in electric cars

With all due respect, what in the world are you on about?

xNeil··on Buffett to step down following six-decade run atop Berkshire
Not convinced working for government is the best use of your potential, though considering he owns 5% of all US Treasury Bills, I wouldn't say his impact is any less than being a government employee.

Not by Buffett, but you'll love Poor Charlie's Alamanack, by Charlie Munger, his lifelong business partner.

The moral panic is social media being the reason for the suicides going up, not the fact that suicides are going up in itself.

Sharing the Hugo theme is a great move Herman. I'll be starting a Bearblog now, all thanks to this comment.

Am I the only one who sees that the entire website is AI generated? Their categories make no sense, neither does their homepage. Weird.
xNeil··on Twitter shut off API access; users volunteering their own data for an open API
Yes, and Twitter isn't reacting specially in this regard. See Reddit hiking API prices by an absurd amount.
xNeil··on Twitter shut off API access; users volunteering their own data for an open API
I don't think that's fair - getting back the chronological timeline itself made the purchase a good one in my eyes, alongside the For You feed, which seems to work wonderfully (for me). Not to forget you can literally turn off ads if you want. I seem to be a real minority, but I do genuinely believe Musk has done a great job with Twitter (or X).
xNeil··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
Cable Cowboy, I'm guessing. Great book!
xNeil··on Nietzsche's Guide to Greatness
From Theodore Alois Buckley's introduction to Alexander Pope's translation of The Iliad:

"When we have read Plato or Xenophon, we think we know something of Socrates; when we have fairly read and examined both, we feel convinced that we are something worse than ignorant."

25% of the Earth's population is younger than 15. Assuming 20% of them use the internet, the TAM (not including the <15 year olds) is 80% of the world's population.

3 out of 4, or 75%, seems like nearly ever human, I'd say (though it is a matter of opinion I guess.)

>Google and Apple have a somewhat poor software innovation reputation.

I'm assuming you mean reputation as in general opinion among developers? Because Google's probably been the most innovative company of the 21st century so far.

it's rarely wrong when it comes to concepts - it's the facts and numbers that it hallucinates.

xNeil··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
It actually does seem to be correct, in that Musk doesn't exactly spend his money on homes or cars or yachts or other material possessions - it seems all his money goes to philanthropy and his businesses (hence the 'per se').
xNeil··on Calculus Made Easy
Feynman started with Calculus Made Easy, and only did Calculus for the Practical Man after he finished it.
xNeil··on The Google employees who created transformers
It's not about just ad revenue though, is it? Many thousands, if not millions of sites rely entirely on Google Search for their revenue. You cannot simply replace all of them with a chatbot - there are massive consequences to such decisions.
xNeil··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
It is quite the impactful story. Saw it under a Twitter (X) thread on IQ and orders of thinking - worth the read.
xNeil··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
i mean, sounds fine? if i buy a physical product, i must be able to do whatever i want to do with it, no? who are apple to decide what i do with a device once i own it?
xNeil··on Google CEO calls Gemini completely unacceptable, vows to make structural changes
Why would Sundar resign? That makes no sense whatsoever. Google is the clear leader in search, as it has always been. Leader in Mail, Browsers, Drive Storage, Video (YouTube), Maps, Calendars - the entire personal software suite, basically.

Not to forget Waymo leading the driverless car race. It's also not like Gemini is pathetic - it's a very high performing model, and although I'd expect them to be closer to GPT4 by now, if it was that easy someone else would have done it. OpenAI are the only ones to have done this well, and it's extraordinary how well they're doing.

xNeil··on Show HN: Open-source macOS AI copilot using vision and voice
electron's a really nice option, specially for people that aren't interested in porting their apps or spending too much time on development

this is a macOS specific app it seems - if you want better performance and more integration with the OS, i'd recommend using swift

xNeil··on Show HN: Open-source macOS AI copilot using vision and voice
hey - i know there's quite some negativity in this thread, but i just wanted to let you know that you don't have to change something if you don't want to

if that specific facial expression is getting you more views, i see that as justified. it's up to you whether or not you want to keep the thumbnail or not

(c) pay money to the company that spends extraordinary amounts of money to host and serve you these videos while simultaneously paying creators, carrying the creator economy, helping companies advertise their products and recommending you videos you may like, while giving you the ability to watch these video from any browser of your choice.

I'm not so sure of that. What ethics has, say, JK Rowling sacrificed? Warren Buffett?
xNeil··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
To be fair, 90% of all people won't admit they were wrong.

Sidenote, I think HN will be wrong on Elon Musk and X as well over the long term (personal opinion of course). But the way the discourse around X has changed on HN is incredible.

When Parag Agarwal was made CEO, everyone on HN complained about the platform and how a subscription model was the way to go. Now that Elon Musk has instated a subscription model, (seemingly) all on HN agrees he's running the company into the ground.

Seems to be happening a lot more often over the past 4 or 5 years.

xNeil··on Be an Open Source Absolutist
>Politically captured Twitter was far more politically captured before Elon's takeover.

>Closed source Elon open sourced the algorithm.

xNeil··on John Riccitiello steps down as CEO of Unity
Everything except short-term profits. X seems decently focused on the long term, especially with subscriptions being introduced as a (new) revenue stream.

Also not sure about R&D, as I don't know what R&D Twitter was doing pre-acquisition, but there's been an extraordinary increase in the rate of addition of new features and changes to the platform.
