x3iv130f··on How Many Hobbits? A Demographic Analysis of Middle Earth
Elves are a magical race.

Without a source of magic they eventually lose their bodies and diminish into woodland spirits.

You can't have elves without magic and still have them be elves.

They literally disappear any place without some amount of magic.

x3iv130f··on How Many Hobbits? A Demographic Analysis of Middle Earth
The youngest named character would be Nellas who briefly befriended young Turin in the woods of Doriath.
x3iv130f··on Horrifying numbers of Americans will not make it to old age
The average in the US are heavily affected by obese African American women with diabetes lacking a highschool education.

It's a societal issue more than a healthcare issue.

x3iv130f··on Lifers, Dayjobbers, and the Independently Wealthy: A Letter to a Former Student
The exceptions are such because they are able to sell themselves as a "lifestyle brand" with a musical act associated.

Something many musicians don't understand is that music is not primarily artistic nor technical but cultural.

x3iv130f··on Monolith: The Recommendation System Behind TikTok
The question isn't "if" they're spying. Every smartphone and nearly app you install is constantly spying on you and using your data for their benefit.

The question is, do you trust the PRC with your data?

Personally, I avoid most social media sites since I want to reduce the amount of information about me floating around in databases.

x3iv130f··on Byte Mini PC Powered by AMD – Get notified when available
I have built two mini-ITX NAS units.

One is a Jonsbo N1. The other a Jonsbo N2.

Jonsbo N1 is a pretty good case if the only thing you care about is getting a a small footprint as you can stand the case vertically.

Jonsbo N2 is a better more convenient case in a "cube" shape that feels smaller despite being similar in volume.

One of my builds uses an AM4 motherboard with unregistered ECC. With AM4 motherboards you're limited to any "pro" AM4 cpu, four SATA3 ports, and 2.5 gbe.

The other uses a used SuperMicro X10SDV-4C-TLN2F with registered ECC. With the Supermicro board you're stuck with an old integrated Xeon with insufficient cooling but get dual 10gbe ports and six SATA3 ports.

x3iv130f··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
I couldn't agree more.

Actual wealth comes from having ownership in wealth generating assets.

You can act rich for a season off of a big paycheck but you'll soon be back to poverty if your money isn't converted into value generating assets.

x3iv130f··on The Cornell University Witchcraft Collection
Carl Sagan is an excellent communicator but he relies too heavily on literary tropes and popular fiction.

The issue of witchcraft is not unchecked beliefs, but the combustible mixture of politics and economics.

Early witches weren't old women performing secret rituals in dense forests. They were the bourgeoisie, who found themselves newly rich during a time of political and economic uncertainty.

The "Malleus Maleficarum" never caught on among the religious elite. Why would they care about the imagined threat of witches when Protestants were out in the open and gaining ground amongst all levels of society?

Where the book did catch on was amongst secular courts. The book provided a convenient justification for condemning political and economic opponents. There it was used to great effect.

x3iv130f··on Low-cost open source device can measure air pollution anywhere
For home use, you should aim for multiple sensors that can track temperature, humidity, CO2, VOC, and PM2.5.

CO2 is important to track as high concentrations can impact sleep quality and critical thinking ability.

VOCs is important to track as they are associated with asthma and allergic reactions.

CO2 can only be removed by opening a window.

Most VOCs come from household chemicals and are only removed by using lots and lots of charcoal filters as the HEPA filters in household air purifiers aren't able to capture it in significant amounts.

x3iv130f··on Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2022 Preliminary Data
We will continue to have pedestrian collisions until we start blaming those actually at fault: the politicians and engineers who design and build dangerous transit and automotive systems.
x3iv130f··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
The dialogue could have used a couple more passes to be more subtle and cleverly written.

It is important to remember that Tolkien was like a British gentleman: well-mannered with a sharp wit. All of his characters have that same coloring to them.

x3iv130f··on Birds Changed Their Tune During the Pandemic
I had to stop reading this article when it used the term "unnatural quiet".

It is the noise that is unnatural, not the quiet.

Ancient cities teemed with birds and bird songs, so much so that birds were often featured heavily in their creative works.

See: https://aeon.co/essays/the-ancient-world-teemed-with-birds-n...

Now, the artificial has intruded itself into the natural world. When I open the window of my urban apartment, the bird songs I hear have melodies like jackhammers and car alarms. The birds in cities now make the same sounds as the cities.

The natural world has adapted, and in doing so has become the same as the artificial.

x3iv130f··on Don’t teach kids to fear the world
If you can physically drive 50+ mph down a street signed for 25 mph then whoever built the road may have been thoughtful but they certainly weren't thinking about safety.

Signs and warnings rank very low in the hierachy of engineering controls.

The safest option would be to physically prevent vehicles able to travel at greater than 15mph from being in areas with children.

The next safest would be to redesign the street to prevent high-powered vehicles from being able to travel at greater than 15mph.

x3iv130f··on Documenting Aramaic before its native speakers vanish (2013)
Language vs dialect is a political question, not a scientific one.

There are plenty of mutually unintelligible dialects and plenty of mutually intelligible languages.

x3iv130f··on Why hasn't Middle Earth had an Industrial Revolution?
In the earliest iterations Tolkien imagined Middle-Earth to have steam punk technology. I believe it is because steam ships and rolling tanks are much closer to what Tolkien expierenced in the First World War when he first conceived his world.

I suspect over the course of his life Tolkien became more and more frustrated with technology, and removed most overt traces of it to bring his stories closer to what he read in Medieval folk lore.

x3iv130f··on ‘Blade Runner’ at 40
Don't tell the diehard fans but I prefer the theatrical edition as the story works better in a shorter punchier presentation.
x3iv130f··on Rarely Seen Paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien
If you haven't seen any of the fan edits you are doing yourself a huge diservice. Last one I saw was the M4 edit which went as far as redoing the CGI.

There are brilliant performances hidden amongst the studio meddling.

x3iv130f··on Diet Coke probably isn't a cognitive performance enhancer
The trick is to do an 4:1 dilution of sparkling water and diet soda.

You will end up with 1-2 cans of diet soda heavily diluted by water.

After you get used to it, ordinary canned soda will start tasting like the carbonated syrup it actually is.

x3iv130f··on After millennia of expansion, the world has passed ‘peak agricultural land’
Most of the new housing I see built are 5-over-1s. Giant 6 story apartment buildings built on already busy streets.

What California needs is flexible zoning to allow mixed-use medium density development connected by safe bicycling paths and public transit.

Too much space is taken by automobile parking and there is too far of a distance between places people live and the grocery stores, shopping areas, and gyms they frequent.

x3iv130f··on I'm retiring from the engineering profession
Sure, we can just keep on increasing taxes until all the top earners leave for cheaper areas.

I prefer low taxes.

What's there to lose by building towns at a human scale? Personally, I can live without Fauxrari speeding past my door at 2 am.

x3iv130f··on A city fights back against heavyweight cars
It isn't a binary between 9,000 lb vehicles and 18 lb bicycles.

There is a middle ground with low-weight, low-speed vehicles like 800 lb "golf carts" and 1800 lb Japanese micro-cars.

Japanese micro-cars like the Honda n-box slash get enthusiastic reviews from motorheads and represent a realistic alternative.

x3iv130f··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
Ephesus was founded after this rise in sea level.

Ephesus was founded 3,000-4,000 years ago.

The sea level rise occured over a period of 21,000 to 3,000 years ago.

x3iv130f··on New York rolling out noise law, listening tech for souped-up speedsters
A lot of it is bad urban design.

Traffic calming measures to keep cars slow such as narrow steets and roundabouts can do a lot.

It shouldn't be physically possible to travel at highspeed through residential areas.

x3iv130f··on What is our hidden consumption of microplastics doing to our health?
Consumer grade filters have nicer fans that let them push move more air with less noise. I have multiple in my house and it's amazing how quiet they are.
x3iv130f··on When is a ‘tank’ not a tank?
When it comes to semantics there needs to be a clear separation between common and technical terms.

I once had someone try to argue can't use the word bison and buffalo interchangeably when sharing buffalo puns.

Bison is an old latin word for "wild ox". Buffalo is an old greek word also meaning wild ox. They've been used interchangeably for as long as greek and latin have been spoken together.

Some scientist coming along and naming some animal a "Bison bison" doesn't overwrite thousands of years of history.

x3iv130f··on Stanford gets $1.1B for new climate school from John Doerr
Goodluck convincing wealthy industrialized countries to do anything impactful when most of that wealth comes from exploiting the environment (or exporting it somewhere easier to exploit.)

Even a billionare will find himself running against trillion dollar interests trying to make real progress.

Eradicating malaria is a problem able to be sovlved.

x3iv130f··on Small cars are getting larger – are fuel economy regulations to blame?
I think us as a society may need to accept that there is no safe way to operate 3000+ lb vehicles at the speeds we do now with our current system of roads and infrastructure.
x3iv130f··on Video games are kinda boring
There is a lot more to TTRPGs besides D&D.

I play lighter and more narratively focused games where the focus is collaboratively creating worlds and stories.

Lasers and Feelings has been the biggest hit around my table but I also have a reoccuring game of Dungeon World every other week.

In just ten to fifteen minutes I can throw any random group of friends into a scenario that feels like a tv show.

x3iv130f··on Microplastics found in live human lung tissue
My 10 cent hypothesis would be social detachment leads to falling birthrates.

It is well known that people don't have the same strong community bonds to those in the same physical space that they used to.

In an environmemt like this sex becomes rarer and riskier as partners are more unknown.

Giving birth and raising children also feels riskier as individuals don't have a community to rely on and absorb the added burden of child rearing.

x3iv130f··on How much do things really cost?
I had a recent vacation to Japan where the average person commutes by train instead of car.

By your criteria the vast majority of that country wouldn't be classified as a "society".

At least in the US, the government is paying vast and unsustainable sums of money to prop up a failing and inefficient form of transportation.

That inefficiency was created at a time when the US was the only significant industrial power.

We no longer have extra factory capacity from the second world war or armies of returning GIs to work in those factories or buy those products. We now have to compete on the world stage against other economies we're poorly matched to beat.

It is time to move on to the 21st century and design our solutions to fit our current capabilities instead of what existed 70 years ago.
