wiredfool··on What We've Learned from 150 Years of Stock Market Crashes
So far, this is a minor stock correction coupled with unprecedented political uncertainty.

In my lifetime, there have been multiple -10+% single day drops, one -22%, and a bunch of -10% months. In that time though, no one has questioned the full faith and credit of the US government.

However now -- The Supreme Court had to take a case to rule that the government had to pay contracts that had already been delivered on. The Treasury has yoinked money from NY State over ACH because DOGE disagreed with the program. Musk and DOGE are trying to break departments so hard that there's no putting them back even with a court order. He's threatening Social Security, which has always been the third rail.

The trouble is that some form of stability and law is required for the sort of financial business that powers the US. There are other ways of being rich -- patronage, extractive, but that's not an engine that drives financialization and the ability to start business, get investments, and generally get some return back out of things. You lose the stability and the trustworthiness, the goose goes away, and there are no more golden eggs.

wiredfool··on Forget Twitter Threads; Write a Blog Post Instead (2021)
Here's the link to the blog post from that twitter thread: https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/16/sociopathic-monsters/

So, really, this is a case of writing a blog post and cross posting it to twitter.

(now there are obviously other writers who don't do this, but Doctorow always does)

wiredfool··on Mox – modern, secure, all-in-one email server
I've been stuck running my own inbound email since back in the 90's when I set the catchall separator to '-' on my domain.
wiredfool··on The power of interning: making a time series database smaller
Yeah, I've got some clickhouse tables that store similar data (GBFS), and I've got an amortized size on the 1byte/row level.

Must have happened after I made my changes. Would have been roughly 2020, based on when I got the monitor.
wiredfool··on Electric Propulsion Magnets Ready for Space Tests
You’d get more thrust, but lower delta-v for the same total mass, because you’re replacing propellant mass with fixed mass.

I (personally) forked rectangle a few years back to give me thirds of a window, for a 32" display running in 4k@1x.

I use (basically) left, middle, right, and top half/bottom half.

wiredfool··on Bald eagles are thriving again after near extinction
I disturbed a bald eagle eating a road kill deer by driving by one time.

You know how crows and other birds will take off and look like they're going to hit your car? Now imagine it with a bird with a 6 foot wingspan.

wiredfool··on Dogs may have domesticated themselves because they liked snacks, model suggests
I've had outdoor cats -- at one point two brothers.

One was a complete terror for birds. He'd go after them all, including hummingbirds. Left bits everywhere. Then we lost him due to something bigger and sharper.

The other one couldn't be arsed to hunt anything, until we moved a couple miles into the country and the house had rodents (due to the previous owner feeding birds). Over the course of the first year, he got 25 and I got 2 with traps. Never saw any evidence of dead birds.

So, it varies. By the cat.

wiredfool··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
Your first egg is $1000. After that, Free Eggs! Except for the feed, and the work.

wiredfool··on U.K. demand for a back door to Apple data threatens Americans, lawmakers say
This is pretty clearly against EU principles. If anything this is more like a US alignment than a EU alignment.

It's pretty in line with their online protection act though, which is threatening jurisdiction over worldwide websites, no matter the size and with no clear guidance as to what a significant audience in the UK means.

As the chart is updated bi-weekly, but the data point that may change is for the current year. The first few days or weeks of a new year are less accurate compared to the end of a year.
wiredfool··on Record-breaking neutrino is most energetic ever detected
Track cyclists (sprinters, world class) do 2KW+ peak for a few seconds at a time. That's potentially ~3HP. (and while doing so, average more than 70kph over a 200m distance)

That $800 first egg...

10 years back, we were getting eggs at something like 25c/egg in feed costs. But we had a bunch of birds that only laid every 2 or 3 days, so they were no where near as efficient as a first year dedicated layer. OTOH, they all had names, we had most of the egg colors, and the bantam eggs were so cute. And the one hen that basically only laid double yolkers.

Meanwhile in Ireland, I can get a tray of 30 free range for 8 eur at a vending machine on the dog walk. Or 15 for 4.50.

Lidl is maybe marginally cheaper, prices there have gone up maybe 20% in a year.

wiredfool··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
I was in 6th grade. It was a shitty day all around -- there was a metrorail accident under the river. I was on a school bus for 4 hours while getting home in the snow. The plane hit a bridge and went into the river.

Think of what you know about DC traffic when there's a flake of snow in the air, and put an airliner crash and a metro accident on top of that.

Maybe it's not logical, but I'm still not a fan of flying through National in the winter.

wiredfool··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
Short runway too. 9/11 restrictions only made it that much worse.

It was discussed post 9/11 about closing National Airport, but congress wouldn't hear it. It was too convenient from DC. (At a time when IAD was way the hell out there, rather than being 1/2 the way out the sprawl.)

I won't fly through DCA in the winter, because when I was a kid there was the Air Florida crash. I'd much prefer IAD with it's 3 mile runways and straight approaches.

wiredfool··on Building a Medieval Castle from Scratch
This is well worth a visit if you're remotely near the area. We visited a few years back, and the kids thought it might be worth going back for a second day.

One bit of interest -- if constructed back in the 1300s, it would have probably taken 4 years or so. Funding is the biggest difference, historically it would have been built from a rich patron's pockets with no desire to wait 25 years for the protection and image it would provide.

wiredfool··on Turn any bicycle electric
That could be a really quick retrofit -- looks like only the chain and chainguard would need to change for the standard utility type bike.

Top speed would probably depend on the rear cog, unless they're doing something really sneaky.

Because commits should be small and fast, and always work, like a save. If you’re running a multi second process during commit it’s going to get ripped out.
