vocram··on Decrypting your own HTTPS traffic with Wireshark
But real “hackers” used Ettercap instead!
vocram··on In-flight surgery with a coat-hanger and silverware
While the surgeon was pointing to the left side of OP, they just answered “it’s the right side” meaning that the right side was the right side … Guess what the surgeon did.
vocram··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
You want a switch that also kills power without software or firmware.

I had a Dell that once got stuck and the usual long press of the power button was not switching it off (probably it was sw/fw controlled). I had to take it apart and disconnect the battery, otherwise I would have lost my working day waiting for it to die.

vocram··on A report on exercise and sleep (2021)
True, but you won’t be able to sustain any moderate physical effort later in your life if you never did anything for your fitness when younger.
vocram··on A report on exercise and sleep (2021)
You sounds like me. I’m seasonally suffering of the same problem. And AFAICS it doesn’t correlate with my sleep hygiene.

What’s worse, I feel tired the whole day, but not that much anymore towards night.

vocram··on The Olivetti Programma 101
What were typical applications of these computers? And who programmed it?
vocram··on Avoidance of sun exposure as a risk factor for major causes of death (2016)
My mood is so positively influenced by sun exposure or just by a clear sunny sky, that I really don’t understand why you would avoid it. For me it’s one of those things where the risk is worth the benefits.
vocram··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
You say it like parents choose the easy explanation. But what if for some people the meaning of their life is to have kids? For sure parenting gives your life _a_ meaning. But I doubt people choose to have kids for that.

I think the choose of having kissy it’s more a mix of ambition, societal conventions and natural instinct.

vocram··on For some searches the whole screen on Google is now ads
Gosh! It’s been a while that none of my searches ended up on that site. Now I know the reason.
vocram··on Buy things, not experiences
The equivalent 2022 price for a top end road bike is closer to $15k. Just the bike.
vocram··on Ask HN: I'm making like 0 friends at college, how to fix it?
#5 should be true no matter what kind of suggestion you are giving. Funny how often people assume that if someone is alone then it’s because they are dirty or looks ugly/unfit.
vocram··on Ignoring Docker updates is a paid feature now?
There’s no such thing as Docker images
vocram··on Ignoring Docker updates is a paid feature now?
- For some Linux distro the setup is not as easy as with Docker

- Someone relying on Docker only features like Docker compose

vocram··on Ignoring Docker updates is a paid feature now?
(Pedantic) you probably meant (OCI) container images, not docker images.
vocram··on Short fat engineers are undervalued
And that’s true even more if they are bald and with a beard.
vocram··on Why do they still make car alarms? (2015)
You meant sensitivity so _high_?
vocram··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
I just checked myself, and you get notified with a nice WARNING upon a `docker run`:

WARNING: The requested image's platform (linux/amd64) does not match the detected host platform (linux/arm64/v8) and no specific platform was requested
vocram··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
Are users able to check if they are running a native arm64 container image, as opposed to an amd64 emulated one?

Or that’s something you have to infer from the execution speed?

vocram··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
A Linux VM is still needed because these are Linux containers, ie. they need namespaces, cgroups, layered rootfs, etc.
vocram··on Docker fails to launch on Apple Silicon
Not a bit deal. Building ARM images from Dockerfiles is trivial. And it has the benefit of not having to trust an upstream image content. If you want to go the extra mile, contribute to the project to provide multi arch images support.
vocram··on I think it’s time to re-wire the house
Go for it. Don’t postpone what you could achieve now. You don’t know what will come later in your life.
vocram··on I think it’s time to re-wire the house
I really like his workshop. Tools are well organized. No dirt. Enough space for working.

That’s one of my life goals.

vocram··on What is the best dumb TV?
Now I am curious of how most microwaves are modulating power.
vocram··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
Exactly. This happens to me so often. I put my phone back and then ask myself: “what did I just read / watched?” Most of the time I don’t remember.
vocram··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
I’m happy to be free from sugar since a few months. I’m adding salt in my oats instead of sugar. Or just fruits. Or cocoa powder.

Cutting carbs though, esp. fruits, is way harder.

vocram··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
It prolly blocks DNS requests.
vocram··on Walmart Just Launched a Line of Backpacking Gear
The people buying high end do care about the brand and reputation. They accept to pay inflated prices for a well known brand, but would not buy at a discounted price a retail store brand. Brand and reputation communicates quality.
vocram··on Linux containers in a few lines of code
The container process has still full access to /dev, /sys, all capabilities of root, and the ability to insmod.
vocram··on Linux containers in a few lines of code
Yes, rtnerlink is used to configure networking via a netlink socket, and libnetlink provides an abstraction over sending raw datagrams.
vocram··on Ask HN: How do I learn C properly?
Becoming proficient in a language usually involves: - writing code with it long enough, - collaborate in a project based on it, - reading code other people wrote, - keep yourself up to date by following the language evolution, - go more in depth in language internals, compilers, etc...

I wrote C for 10+ years (mostly bare metal FW), yet I am still amazed of how little I know about it. Recently for example I learnt of all the things the dynamic linker does in Linux, how symbols memory addresses are resolved at runtime using PLT, ....

The good point about C is that it can be used for very different kind of projects, so the choices are a lot.
