valianteffort··on Elon Musk and X to fight Australian order to remove Sydney stabbing content
So the new twitter using less resources available to it is fighting less requests that are still blatant attempts by governments to exercise control over media narrative. Got it.

There is no mental gymnastics or wordplay you can perform to justify quasi-fascist bureaucrats from hiding the truth.

valianteffort··on On Terry A. Davis
It's more than a stretch to say people using slurs are racist. These are symptoms of a hypersensitive culture that rewards pseudo-virtuous people who publicly call out "racism".

I grew up with a diverse group of friends, we used every slur under the sun to shit talk eachother and still do when being idiots. Those slurs have no meaning to us beyond the comedic value they provide in their vulgarity. I'd be shocked to discover any of us were racist, pretty strange to have not noticed after >20 years.

valianteffort··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
Defects are inherent to anything involving human labor. You can't expect workers on 12hr shifts to have consistent high quality of throughput. It has nothing to do with expansion and more to do with people just getting lazy or negligent throughout the day.
valianteffort··on Show HN: My $1k self-install, off-grid solar backup build for renters
You can buy 256Wh battery banks for around $150 now. You can pair them with a timer for charging/topping off at night when electricity is cheap. They even accept solar input.

Throw one in every room and between appliances like the fridge or oven. Now you have a UPS for your whole house and the cheapest energy rates throughout the day.

valianteffort··on Show HN: Running TempleOS in user space without virtualization
Right because blacks are such rabid animals that we're gonna cry racism when it's clear he is mentally unwell. You can keep your reactionary savior bullshit, thanks.
valianteffort··on "Strong focus on aesthetics" contributed to collapse of Norway timber bridge
Your Tampa Bay article does nothing to refute the claim that the bridge was designed by an all female team. All it does is state that men also worked at both companies and were also in leadership roles therefore it couldn't have been led by an all-female team. As though the companies were so small every employee was involved in every project.

If this is the best evidence you have it's not very good. And snopes is a laughably unreliable source I won't even entertain their bullshit.

valianteffort··on Show HN: Running TempleOS in user space without virtualization
Terry was a devout christian, genesis would have been a good name too!
valianteffort··on The Internet Feels Dead, Doesn't It?
I didn't bother reading this, skimmed through and saw essentially the same tired arguments being made.

The internet is what you make of it. If you spend all your times in niche communities discussing your hobbies, learning more about them, watching videos related to them, etc. You're probably gonna have a great experience.

Conversely if you're doomscrolling social media, watching mindless youtube videos endlessly, porn, or shitposting on twitter. You're probably gonna rewire your reward pathways to desire that more. And a lot of that stuff may not necessarily be designed to make you unhappy but probably does (comparison to wealthy lifestyles, bleak outlook on the future, unrealistic sexual relationships, continually negative conversations).

Change your own habits before blaming the world.

valianteffort··on Twitter's pivot to x.com is a gift to phishers
No he got removed for trying to switch their servers from linux to windows.
valianteffort··on BART to offer final rides on original equipment on April 20
Regrettably I lived in SF for years and never took the ferry across the bay. Will have to give it a try next time I'm out there.
valianteffort··on Three Body Problem Review: Benioff and Weiss' Netflix Debut Is a Brutal Dud
It hardly even qualifies as sci-fi. Just another shit-tier serving of slop focusing more on tired, played out character tropes than the actual material. Your average noveau netflix adaptation of fiction designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I haven't been this disappointed since apple's foundation series. I will never understand the hubris of showrunners being tasked with adapting a book and then tossing out 99% of the source material to write the same idiotic story with a new skin.

valianteffort··on National Park Service Sued over New No-Cash Policy at National Parks
They don't scan your ID. The park employee just checks the name you wrote on the pass against the name on your ID and hands it back to you.
valianteffort··on Apple hit with over 1.8B euro EU antitrust fine in Spotify case
Congratulations, you lack even the mental capacity to see that I was explaining the situation not defending it. How do you manage to breathe on your own I wonder.
valianteffort··on Japan's Space One rocket explodes seconds after liftoff
A lot of these companies are either trying different things or doing the same thing and no one is sharing their secret sauce.

They are not insurmountable challenges but each team building rockets from scratch have to go through them. I think it's vital to the long-term success anyway. Easier to learn from your own mistakes than someone elses.

valianteffort··on Apple hit with over 1.8B euro EU antitrust fine in Spotify case
I wouldn't say the fanbase is arguing against it. Apple just have a good understanding of their average user. While you may have no issue installing unsigned apps and dealing with any troubleshooting, their average user, or most users, don't.

It's not to say they don't have a financial incentive to disallow app installs outside of their App Store, but there is a predictable cost in terms of support man hours and device troubleshooting they will incur in addition to lost revenue. So long as it is legal for them to continue business as usual, they have no incetive to allow it and the large majority of the userbase don't care.

valianteffort··on A daddy-longlegs possesses six eyes, including two vestigial pairs
You remember incorrectly. Tesla have never used LIDAR except for training on specific developer cars. Elon has said from day one LIDAR is an expensive waste because of the compute requirements and latency. They did remove the parking ultrasonic sensors, which at one point were used as a close proximity, low speed auxiliary data source in FSD.

The mandate of FSD has always been that humans get away with driving using only their vision so it must be possible for a computer to do the same. If you have used FSD lately it's largely there.

valianteffort··on Why the world stopped having sex
Depending on your age I would exhaust all natural avenues for increasing free-test before resorting to exogeneous. With that said, at least in the US, there are many clinics that specialize in TRT specifically with the current wave of popularity. Just call around its not illegal to ask.
valianteffort··on Ukraine intelligence 'confirms' Russian forces using Starlink
Because it's not true, unless they are operating devices stolen from ukranian forces in "ukranian" territory, which becomes funnily enough, ukraines own fault.

Had they not demanded use of starlink be allowed for military action, against SpaceX/Elon's wishes, or had they not publicly guilt tripped him into providing the service at no cost, the devices would be useless in that territory.

valianteffort··on Unity cuts 1,800 more staff in 'company reset'
Everyday it seems like the tech bubble has burst again. I was too young during the dot-com bubble to remember how long the recovery took, but for those who were working at the time, how long did the recovery take?
valianteffort··on Apple iPod Shuffle USB interface pinout
TOSLINK is seriously underrated
valianteffort··on Harvard Faces New Threat of State Tax on $51B Endowment
The institutions have been a considerable growth factor for the city. Seems kind of rude to stop them from parking their money in real estate like everyone else has been doing.
valianteffort··on The $180 Lenovo Tab M11 has a 90Hz display, updates through 2028
I appreciate that someone is trying to offer decent products at low price points.

Will definitely be picking one up.

valianteffort··on Alaska 737 cockpit voice recorder data erasure renews safety debate
There is no evidence it will save lives, you're just exhibiting signs of poor social development by not understanding why this is an issue and being to stubborn to realize. Most people are not engineers, capable of sitting silently for several hours.
valianteffort··on Unity Software plans to reduce its workforce by 25%, eliminating ~1,800 jobs
Apples to oranges. Unreal has always been a AAA engine that anyone had access to. But fortnite became their meal ticket and could more than cover any losses incurred by reducing fees considerably. Going down to 5% was an attack against Apple/Google over their 30% fees to increase fortnite revenue.

Unity have never been serious competition outside of being easier to pickup for indie developers. Trying to compete with Unreal was their mistake.

valianteffort··on I made an app that runs Mistral 7B 0.2 LLM locally on iPhone Pros
I wouldn't say "love it" as much as I would say "don't know" or "don't care".

Your average person doesn't spend a second thinking about Apple's app store policies. In fact most people don't even install new apps unless absolutely necessary.

valianteffort··on Navajo Nation request to delay private mission placing human remains on the moon
Perhaps your corporeal flesh is a biohazard to be incenerated on your death but my God considers our bodies sacred and tells us to return to the planet to sustain life. I don't believe life ends at earth.

The idea that we must "leave no trace" on the moon or any other heavenly body is idiotic and impossible. It stems from scientist looking to protect their own interests. We will live on the moon, and mars, and many other planets some day. These were all gifts given to us by the Almighty.

valianteffort··on Yesterday, someone sent over $1M in Bitcoin to Satoshi Nakamoto
One of the earliest examples of proof of burn that I can remember was around 2013 where counterparty was selling the first (?) tokens using the bitcoin network. Their application used an invalid multi-sig address to send your bitcoin to that would effectively burn it as there would never be a private key that could spend it (can't remember the full details here). Addresses that sent money in would then have tokens available to use on their application layer.

I believe this is actually where the term was first coined as well. What it means now I'm not sure, don't follow crypto.

valianteffort··on Navajo Nation request to delay private mission placing human remains on the moon
All humans have the same right to the moon. Some are just better at asserting those rights. Cry all you want but if someone wants to pay to have their grave dug on the lunar surface, you have no right to stop them.
valianteffort··on I made an app that runs Mistral 7B 0.2 LLM locally on iPhone Pros
What the hell are you on about? Apple has rules and guidelines on (user) generated content, GP was asking whether it applied here.
valianteffort··on Unemployed Americans Are Being Forgotten in a Strong Job Market
I actually suspected the same. Heading into an election year which are always volatile without everything else going on.

It appears as though most of these job postings are fake, to give the illusioj that things are better than they are.
