vadym909··on Tech workers think Silicon Valley and startups are losing their luster
The cloud cover in Seattle from November to March and the unpredictable sunny days make it a torture if you are not heads down in your work (indoor). The rest of the year and great surroundings make it up a bit.
vadym909··on Bidding war with Salesforce drove up Microsoft’s LinkedIn bill
Not the OP- it's not fudging. As a business you get to choose what kind of accounting standards you want to follow. When someone says GAAP basis, it means the closest to a good or universally accepted accounting method (or straightforward means of calculating a profit).
vadym909··on A Tragic Loss
This is just beyond me. How did the radars not see the front portion of the truck, the front wheels, the underbody of the container isn't that high to let the entire car go through?
vadym909··on Volkswagen's U.S. diesel emissions settlement to cost $15B
in other words- Too big to Fail? The equivalent of which in human terms is too rich to be prosecuted.
vadym909··on 'We're in a Bubble'
You just jinxed us man. Taunting Lady Luck like that? Now we're really screwed!
vadym909··on Dropbox says it is cash flow positive, in no rush to IPO
If they didn't take VC Money it would be great. For a VC, a startup refusing to go IPO is like a bank that takes your money offering you a high interest on your checking account, but when you go to get it out, says oops sorry, it went into a fixed deposit.
vadym909··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
OK- Granted their UX sucks, if you use it for other than looking up people. I always suspected that may partly be intentional to prevent people and bots digging too much, scraping, misusing and using it for spam
vadym909··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
Sorry. I meant Enterprise
vadym909··on Neighbors Clash in Silicon Valley
No setbacks, in many people's opinion is that it creates a tunnel like effect on the street and cuts out light on the lower floors shops and offices. Its also not the norm in the Area.

I guess setbacks are a 'nice to have' if you are an owner in the area. As an overpaying renter, I couldn't care less.

vadym909··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
What's interesting about this deal is what didn't happen 1. Google who is right next door and wants to make a dent in Cloud didn't go after them 2. LinkedIn who is a monopoly in this category- decided to give up trying to go its own- seems like they knew they topped out
vadym909··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
I have no idea when people say Linkedin UI is awful. To me it is better looking, arranged and pleasing to look at than 99% of similar tools. (Monster, Glassdoor, Indeed, facebook)

On the other hand, I absolutely hate Microsoft's UI on everything from their Flat Design, Xbox Menu, (everything except Office)

vadym909··on Neighbors Clash in Silicon Valley
Build Baby Build! I was first aghast when I saw the new big apartment buildings coming up on El Camino Real and San Antonio Ave in Mountain View and Sunnyvale- with barely 1-5 feet set back from the the sidewalk. Then I realized which side of the table I was and I was like Fuck It. It may not be pretty, someone pulled a fast one on the Inspector/Panel/whoever but they are helping me with making more housing avbl and hopefully rents more affordable.
vadym909··on The Secret of Billions
I know at least once case where the insider (a famous Ohio State professor) didn't profit, but his friends and relatives made $1M on his tip. He still got 5 years in prison. http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2005/12/12/daily...
vadym909··on Uber users with low phone batteries more likely to accept surge pricing
They are just trying to get you hooked and habituated because once you get accustomed to it- they know you will be a life (or at least a very long term) customer.
vadym909··on Fast.com: Netflix internet connection speed test
Wow- this is awesome. I hated speedtest.net
vadym909··on Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Takes $1B Position in Apple
Wow- This must be hard for Buffett to explain to Bill Gates- his close friend. Did he ever invest in Microsoft?
vadym909··on HARC
/s You need to be the worst offender to survive
vadym909··on HARC
For one company to take up 50% of the really scarce H1b quota (65,000) is just not fair. To do it to get a lil lower cost worker is inexcusable.

I have no issue with Infosys's offshoring- only their unfair gobbling up of the H1b visas.

vadym909··on HARC
Would've expected YC to know this. Infosys hogs half the highly skilled worker H1b quota every year at an average salary of $80K in effect denying many startups and founders the ability. http://www.myvisajobs.com/Visa-Sponsor/Infosys/1088782.htm

They probably file 60K H1bs if they ended up getting 30K in the lottery.

vadym909··on The pressure that U.S. inequality exerts on parents
or in CA it is - 25% White American, 25% Indian, 25% Chinese, 25% European
vadym909··on Down and out in the magic kingdom – A tale of software consulting in the midwest
If every employee at Pillar pulled out a bullet list of accomplishments from their annual performance review- it would seem everyone from the admin to the CEO saved the company from death multiple times. If everyone of these guys flashed those every time they screwed something up- it would be very hard to operate a company. There is give and take at work and its good to be aware of that line is.
vadym909··on iPhone Sales Drop, and Apple’s 13-Year Surge Ebbs
You mean like a CTRL F? It just did a Google Search for me
vadym909··on Apple Services Shut Down in China in Startling About-Face
I can't imagine ibooks and imovies was making in money in China given how easy it is to get content without paying. Apple's probably OK with just the hardware profits from iphones. Developing countries aren't great markets for IP/copyrighted products.
vadym909··on NYC tech catching up to Silicon Valley, while Seattle flails
Seriously. I think they make it clear even to non-techies that GE is the place for Train Engines and Bulbs! I was shocked they were perpetuating the perception people have of GE.
vadym909··on NYC tech catching up to Silicon Valley, while Seattle flails
I think its fair benchmark. Adobe ($48B) is a relatively successful company of decent size- Not as big as Google and not as small as a borderline unicorn
vadym909··on Almost Nothing About the ‘Apple Harvests Gold from iPhones’ Story Is True
He's not a Saint? Didn't he just have fly over to meet the Pope over the weekend? Who does that?
vadym909··on Lyft gaining on Uber as it spends big on growth
you mean $1B surely?
vadym909··on Saudi Arabia Warns of Economic Fallout If Congress Passes 9/11 Bill
Nothing better to get bill passed by the US than a threat. What were they thinking?
vadym909··on Inky the octopus breaks out of New Zealand aquarium
A large majority of Indians are vegetarians and the rest only eat fish, chicken or goat. Cows are holy and worshiped!
vadym909··on Wealth doesn't trickle down – it just floods offshore, research reveals (2012)
You make an excellent and fair point if it stops at this. The problem starts when the successful business starts to take advantage of loopholes with their wealth(lobbying, offshoring income, jobs) to advance their ability to make profit at the expense of the labor that doesn't have this ability. So although the pact seems equitable in the beginning- it breaks down one side take unfair advantage of their position. German labor is an example of where the workers have managed to gain from the productivity of the companies mostly through organized labor but also because the companies realize its better to share the wealth. Hence- I'm only guessing we don't see super-rich German billionaires.
