user_0001··on Wanna quit your job and become upwork freelancer? Do not do that
>To an average person, programming is not a valuable thing

+1

And any changes you are asked to make are not "easy" nor "quick" nor could they "do it in an hour if I knew how"

I like to give the example that if you were having a house built, when they were putting the final touches to it, painting the walls, screwing lightbulbs etc. It may delay the house being ready, it may cost a bit more if you decide you want to move the house by 1 metre to the left, change the load bearing walls.

Yet they think similar changes to a project should take no time nor cost a thing.

And the best of all "just build something so I can see it then I will know what I want" but I won't pay you for that.

>To the freelancer just starting out I say: don't get suckered into these kinds of debates, be friendly but firm in rejecting malicious "job offers". Holding out until the right client comes along can be tough

Can also be impossible if you have bills to pay, a family to support, are just starting out. I've been there (move to the tropics with a young family during the economic down turn, the few contacts I had who had promised work before I left were unable to deliver when I arrived (took the best part of two years wandering around the world to get to the destination).

But good clients are out there. I still do the odd bit of work for a couple of clients I got in the early days (<$15 ph data scraping jobs lol). Financially these days isn't worth doing, but they paid on time, offered to pay for time to discuss changes, offered pay for changes, so like to help them out with the odd bits of work they have as they have had many problems with freelance devs (just like I had with other clients)

user_0001··on DARE: The Anti-Drug Program That Never Actually Worked
"wow the fun bits look fun, as long as I don't get addicted....."

If you are a drug user, reading / watching something that others may thing would turn people away from drugs, a certain kind of drug user (perhaps more adventurous) will be thinking, "yeah I'd like to try that".

Used to be like that for me and others I knew. Case in point, all the PCP scare stories, "man gets super human strength, fights off 10 police, gets naked". I would just focus on the "gets super human strength" - yeah should get some of that.

But at the end of the day, drugs are pretty stupid. Fun. But stupid. Doesn't mean we should stop people taking them. Lots of things are stupid - really, if you think about it. Riding your bike down mountains, any of the more "extreme" sports, rock climbing. Anything with a risk that isn't necessary. But it is up to the individual to weigh the risk, the "fun" reward and decide what they want to do

and your bombs don't burn innocents alive, men women and children? And don't say "oh the intent". The intent is there both sides, I believe the media sound bite is called "collateral damage", but the burning alive of innocents means the same

and your country has no trafficked women and girls forced to work as prostitutes.

and these people are most annoyed about what? Outside meddling in their countries. They are but pawns in geo-political manoeuvring that has been going for years.

We all live in glass houses and none of us should throw stones

user_0001··on Things I was unprepared for as a lead developer
Can depend on where you live. If you have moved to a new area for a job and have no friends or relatives within 6 hours. Your wife is struck down with a nasty illness and is barely able to get out of bed in order to get to the toilet and you have a chlid who needs taken care of / taken to nursery / school etc

I agree. I don't want to see any of your ads. Ever.

Obtrusive / unobtrusive / tracking / no tracking. I don't care. I don't want to see them.

If I can block them I will.

What have you been smoking?

Heroin is several orders of magnitude more similar to antibiotics / chemotherapy drugs than LSD.

user_0001··on K2, a Potent Drug, Casts a Shadow Over an East Harlem Block
All we need now is some group to come up with the slogan

"Won't someone think of children and legalise all drugs"

Then some actual sensible progress will be made

user_0001··on K2, a Potent Drug, Casts a Shadow Over an East Harlem Block
yes. For small personal amounts it is all but decriminalised in name.

If you get caught, more often than not it is confiscated / thrown away.

Same for growing for personal (no scales, no baggies, no tick list at the property, no "sorting a few mates out" - actually personal), a few plants and nothing will happen, at worst a few hours of community service

user_0001··on K2, a Potent Drug, Casts a Shadow Over an East Harlem Block
As far as I am aware (and all this is second hand knowledge as I stopped taking drugs and moved away from it all about 8 years ago, but am still in contact with a few old friends) the synthetic cannibinoids are all nasty and far worse they what they are trying to replace - cannabis. Far more cases of people losing it / psychosis / blacking it / fitting etc than most of the illegal drugs.

As they are easily available, they tend to be more popular among the young (in some areas) who perhaps know less people on how to get actual cannabis.

Hey kids, don't smoke this plant, which is actually pretty safe* smoke these unknown, brand new chemicals some dodgy chemist has knocked up to bypass some laws.

It is all but directly comparable to prohibition, don't drink these safe regulated spirits, drink this moonshine made in some guys bathtub where the profit is paramount and safety be damned.

Yet another case of illegality causing more harm, more problems and costing more than legalisation ever would.

*but not 100% safe, does cause issues in some etc etc

>Science cannot nor does it claim to be something one can use to acquire certainty about anything

I have heard this too. Although I still fail to grasp how one can hold that view, which shows thought, critical thinking and analysis, then argue that a book written / made up / dictated too by God / added to / amended / edited over the last few thousand years is held up to be something that can gives us certain. Which is the complete opposite of the thinking they put forward with regards to science.

user_0001··on With no DEA in sight, Bolivia keeps reducing coca fields
I don't think the situation is as black and white in Afghanistan as you make it out to be. The issue now is there is chaos. Before when poppy cultivation was reduced to (a reported) a near zero, the Taliban maintained a level of order (albeit brutal).

Or you could take the other approach, they hadn't sold their previous supplies of opium due to bumper crops in previous years, so wanted to limit supplies a bit to raise the price before selling over stock then plant again the following year.

user_0001··on With no DEA in sight, Bolivia keeps reducing coca fields
>Cocaine is problem primarily in the advanced capitalist economies and it is solely within these nations where those problems can be solved..

Travel through the poor neighbourhoods Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil etc and say cocaine (or by-products of the cocaine process) are not a problem.

>and it is solely within these nations where those problems can be solved

The only solution is legalisation of all drugs. Producter countries such as Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Laos, Burma will have billions added to the government funds to help lift 1000s if not millions of people out of poverty. Transport countries such as El Salavador, Honduras, Mexico will cut of instantly 99% of profits to the drug gangs. Users will stop dying from tainted products, or using "research chemicals" instead of the real thing.

Negatives? from what has been seen in Holland and the decriminalisation of cannabis and Portagal, none

user_0001··on “One billion people used Facebook in a single day”
I would say you are wrong.

For a billion users, they need 1/6 of the worlds population. No way do they have that.

How many kids under 7? under 5? in the world. Don't have accounts. How many elderly over 80? 70? don't have accounts.

What is the % of non-"developed" countries? Not 1/6

Compared to people running multiple accounts (personal / professional/ seo accounts / spam accounts), now that I have heard of.

Regardless, they still have a hell of a lot of users, but 1b real, I doubt

user_0001··on Twitter shuts down 30 sites dedicated to saving politicians' deleted tweets
I haven't read the story or followed it all.

But I create API key for site: xyz.com where I use the stream API to get all tweets from users a-z

Then I push those to site zyx.com

There is no way for twitter to know what API generated those tweets. Especially if site xyz.com DOES obey the delete notifications (which also triggers site zyx.com to go into action in checking the deleted tweet)

I don't see how this is a total non-story

user_0001··on Is ketamine the best hope for curing major depression?
Agreed, not physically damaging. But it can destroy you mentally if used often and in heavy doses.

>but I've never heard of LSD destroying a persons bladder. That was the quote I was referring to. Bladder in tact, but a shell of a person left with severe paranoia and mental problems.

Not to hate on LSD, but no drug is safe is abused daily.

user_0001··on The Creative Apocalypse That Wasn’t
Am with you. I remember watching the first season of 24 in 2002 or whenever it was. It was on BBC, so no adverts. Everything had to be ready before, tea made, special cigarettes prepared, no drinking an hour before to avoid toilet breaks.

6 months of talking about the show on Monday, guessing what would happen.

Then a twist comes in and memories coming back of what happened 2-3 months ago and ahhhhhhh yes yes yes amazing, totally forgot about that

Had a friend watch it for the first time, a year or so later when we shared a house. He watched it in 2-3 days. Less twists, less "oh yes I forgot moments" because for him those twists were only a few hours ago.

I think it is a case of "the more you point in, the more you get out"

Saying that, I binge watch now :-(

user_0001··on Ad Blockers and the Nuisance at the Heart of the Modern Web
If it was just brand awareness, the sites could quite easily show an image on the page, served as a static image. Same as it is in a newspaper.

From the little I know, that would bypass the ad blockers.

But then they cannot use flash, tracking cookies etc etc. So if they want to show just ads, they can already

user_0001··on Is ketamine the best hope for curing major depression?
Not sure about now, but a few years back the problem with Ketamine in the UK was it was so cheap. About £5 /$7 for a gram. It was all getting shipped over from Indian supplies by the litre (err 4 quarts(ish)).

I hear now, after India cracked down, it got scheduled in the UK that prices are up and quality is down and mostly coming from China. Very little to none redirected from veterinary supplies for the UK market

user_0001··on Is ketamine the best hope for curing major depression?
You don't get bladder problems using / abusing ketamine just at weekends.

People sniffing it every day / all day and getting through the 5grams+

But hammering that much every day of any drug is not a good idea.

At the above+1 commenter, take LSD at high doses everyday and see what damage you do to yourself
