user_0001··on A brief update
all those who were liberated in Operation Freedom obviously. All those who now live life of a zen like peace due to Operation Enduring Peace

Reminds me of the clip of the Us Marine pointing a gun in the face of unarmed protesters screaming "GET BACK WE ARE HERE FOR YOUR MOTHERFUCKING FREEDOM"...... yeah right mate, you just keep telling yourself that.

user_0001··on Twitter to Stop Counting Photos and Links in 140-Character Limit
if you include an image the limit is 120.

As a URL is some redirect service, I believe that drops the limit by 12 per url.

The 140 limit is not being removed

user_0001··on I'm a good engineer but I suck at building stuff
Depends on your industry and where you work obviously. But I have a strict "that will do" policy. If it looks like it might work, that will do.

It won't' be well engineered, it will be buggy. But the project will be completed and released. If it makes some sales and looks like it has some traction, then I go back and visit the many (many) //todo - clean this up and refactor everything out.

Usually after a while of adding more features, hacking out nasty design decisions the best way on how to do it comes to the fore naturally.

user_0001··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living off of desktop applications?
I sell desktop software to individuals (not business / industry) at a cost of $50-$100.

I have tested SAAS but have seen that:

* People trust a desktop app more. * People value a desktop app more as they feel they "own" it and will pay more

YMMV

user_0001··on What cold showers and exercise have in common (2014)
How about he came out and said

"yo bitch, that's crazy" or "my nigga, that's insane"

These would be deemed unacceptable and rightly so.

user_0001··on What cold showers and exercise have in common (2014)
to the post below.

The term "mother" fucker, may not insinuate fucking ones mother to you - perhaps you are desensitised to it, but to others from different cultures, countries it can be more / less offensive.

If you think about certain words which are all but banned for some colours of society to say, they too used to be all prevalent and not thought of as a problem to say. Perhaps in 100 years from now, to suggest some one fucks their mother would be considered the same

user_0001··on Teen birth rate hits all-time low, led by 50% decline among Hispanics and blacks
I have an old friend who works for social service in the UK in a deprived area.

Without wanting to be too crude, he told me that partly the reduction in teen pregnancy is down to the prevalence of porn and how it ends in a facial rather than a vaginal ejaculation.

user_0001··on The Al-Qaeda Leader Who Wasn’t: The Shameful Ordeal of Abu Zubaydah
yes, but we need Turkey. They are in Nato, they are on "our" side - thus we do not criticise (and if we do - very meekly).

The same as when they are "our" dictators, or "theirs". Whether the government is murdering "communists in their 10s / 100s of thousands or whether the government is trying to improve the lot of the country's people via social programs at the experience of foreign (our) international businesses.

user_0001··on My experience being a developer with no developer community
genX here as well. I used to have to drive 1hr 45 / 2.5hrs each way depending on traffic. Always had to plan the journey would take 2.5hrs just incase.

Definitely doable. Kids today huh?

user_0001··on Document 17 Declassified – 9/11 attackers may have had links to Saudi Arabia [pdf]
Don't forget the agreement between the house of Saud and the religious rulers. The religious rulers will not criticise the house of Saud and they will be pretty much left alone.

Add to that mix tribal allegiances, the cross pollination of all groups seeking their own agendas and you have the situation where some very wealthy religious extremists can fund their agendas worldwide including "terrorism".

Too many posts are seeing everything as black and white. The Saudis from the top down planned 9-11 etc.

Just like in the US, there are hidden agendas, secretive groups akin to the CIA all pushing their own agendas whether financial / religious. And just like some in US politics, there are some pushing for the end of days where their chosen deity / son of / prophet of returns and leads them to paradise / the next world.

user_0001··on Document 17 Declassified – 9/11 attackers may have had links to Saudi Arabia [pdf]
Terrorism is what "they" do. We do "morally just wars".

Said every side involved in any conflict sense the dawn of humanity.

ISIS: morally just. The west = terrorists. And they are probably right. Our bombs do terrorise. As do the torture weopans we export to their ruling parties.

and vice versa

user_0001··on Document 17 Declassified – 9/11 attackers may have had links to Saudi Arabia [pdf]
I would thoroughly recommend EVERYTHING by Adam Curtis.

Power of nightmares especially in relation to "terrorism". But also the others.

Equally as important, perhaps they do not have it drilled into them that beauty is all they should aim for. Everything they see is that women should be (model level) beautiful. Should flaunt their women-ness.

Advertising, makeup, dolls, television, films play a bigger part than the so called sexism that exists in engineering cultures

user_0001··on Yellow Water, Dirty Air, Power Outages: Venezuela Hits a New Low
Probably a bit before IIRC. Just after the CIA sponsored coup and kidnapping of the democratically elected leader.

Imagine the reversal. Venezuelan secret services kidnapped the US president to install a more friendly regime so they could profit more from the US natural resources.....

user_0001··on Google App Engine Silently Stopped Sending Email 5 Weeks Ago
not really. I wish I could get away with providing such crap support as the big players do.

If my customers don't get a reply within a few hours, then all hell breaks loose. Even if, there request comes in at 3am / 0300 on a Sunday morning my time.

To be fair, when I point this out to them they do apologise, didn't realise time difference, are in a different part of the world where Sunday is not a day off etc. I then ask what they expect from some billion dollar companies support wise and they say they are happy with a reply within a week. Asking them why a one man shop doing quite a bit less than billions of dollars is expected to provide so much more.

Anyway, rant over. Support isn't hard. You hire enough competent people as your customers require. The end. Happy customers

user_0001··on Steve Miller: The Whole Music Industry Is Fuckin' Gangsters and Crooks
Skrillex got rich by marketing "EDM" to the mass US festival market.

That and probably to no small extent the huge influx of MDMA and MDMA-like drugs.

user_0001··on Steve Miller: The Whole Music Industry Is Fuckin' Gangsters and Crooks
>>It used to be the good bands would eventually rise to the top and the shitty garage bands would be relegated to small venues.

really? Are you sure? Plenty of big bands did not deserve it but were well marketed and plenty of smaller toilet stop tour bands deserved it and never made it.
