umsm··on Peer5 Downloader: Peer-assisted file downloads using WebRTC
Windows 7 running the latest version of chrome
umsm··on Peer5 Downloader: Peer-assisted file downloads using WebRTC
We have a business-class 100Mbps connection.

Chrome shows "Failed - Server problem" with chrome tools showing the request as "Method: HEAD - Status: (canceled)"

umsm··on Peer5 Downloader: Peer-assisted file downloads using WebRTC
Demo Fail: When I tried to download the 200MB file, Chrome is reporting server errors...
umsm··on Apple CarPlay
Not true. Driving a car with bluetooth, I now see how wonderful and useful this feature is. I don't have to take my eyes off the road and I don't have to hold anything to my ear. Its very very seamless.

If you can't talk while you drive, then you shouldn't have passengers either.

umsm··on Apple CarPlay
Is it just me, or is anyone else suspicious about Pandora missing from the supported apps?

umsm··on Tesla Gigafactory [pdf]
By the time batteries become mainstream, the subsidies for EVs will probably disappear as well.
umsm··on Consumer Reports Calls Tesla Model S The Best Car Of 2014
Because electric cars tend to be high performance as a side-effect of the tech used.

Personally, I am more interested in the car because of the gas savings. I won't buy the Tesla S to test it on the nurburgring.

umsm··on The Difference Between Programmers and Coders (2013)
I believe the author merged the responsibilities of a "programmer" with an "Technical architect". To become a good programmer, all you need to do is enjoy reading books, enjoy coding, and work at a moderately sized company.

An architect is different. You have to understand the picture as a whole. You have to understand that one stupid decision can affect the entire product or company's future.

Hurrying to implement excellent code (as a programmer) won't could cost the company many weeks or months or effort to redo.

umsm··on A look at Apple's R&D expenditures from 1995-2013
http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/adam/3924d8cabc4e8469af6fa91...

One question: Why is VW's R&D spending so high? It's BILLIONS more than other car manufacturers.

umsm··on Indian School Girl Creates Washing Machine That Runs Without Electricity
I don't think you've ever washed anything by hand.
umsm··on Sheriff Fires Cop Who Threatened to Arrest Me for Taking Photos of Cops
Is this true? Will you really be arrested for filing a complaint at a police station?
umsm··on Become an exceptional programmer by learning to ship
This is probably the most important point:

Young programmers, due to lack of experience, sometimes don’t see that writing code is only a small part in producing software.

umsm··on Tesla Completes L.A.-to-New York Electric Model S Drive Chargers
Is it reasonable to buy a Model S now hoping that within 6-7 years you can swap out the "old" tech batteries for newer / better / faster / higher capacity battery packs which will be introduced in 5-7 years?

If so, it wouldn't be a bad long-term car for those of us who like to keep cars more than 5 years.

umsm··on Box Refreshes Its iOS Apps, Gives Users Who Download Them 50GB Of Free Storage
You should be able to download the latest version of the app that is supported by your version of iOS.

But, the ipad 1 is already 4 years old. That is pretty old when you consider how quickly the market moves.

umsm··on Gmail was down
Each one of us has the power to do something about it: Perform a Backup.

We should be downloading our mailbox with our contacts on a regular basis. I'm guilty for not doing this, but seems like an area that can use a SaaS.

umsm··on Box Refreshes Its iOS Apps, Gives Users Who Download Them 50GB Of Free Storage
I wouldn't design a new product for ipad 1 users. The tech is too old to invest any time into it.

umsm··on The Mac Pro Review
Isn't it worth it to purchase the Applecare warranty for $250 which extends the warranty period to 3 years?

When you're spending $3k on a computer, I don't see how $250 will really affect the bottom line...

umsm··on Introducing Open Salaries at Buffer
Why would you use salary to determine if someone is a big spender or not? Look at their car / home and see if it's worth the risk.
umsm··on Introducing Open Salaries at Buffer
Why should it be a red flag?

Statistically speaking, you're more likely to make more money by getting a bigger salary now instead of a big payday that may never happen. Statistically, very very few companies will be large enough for employees to cash out.

umsm··on Introducing Open Salaries at Buffer
I don't think that many bosses think like that.

What if the company is not that profitable, can you still stay competitive? Are you willing to risk the future of the company?

umsm··on Amazon said to launch Pantry to take on Costco, Sam's
It's hard for amazon to compete with costco. Their return policy is second to none. When a manufacturer refuses to honor their own warranty, this service is priceless.
umsm··on Are Your Programmers Working Hard, Or Are They Lazy?
this reminds me of a story my father once told me about a visit to a mental hospital:

To keep the patients busy, they would have 2 groups: One group would be responsible for unloading something from the back of a truck while another group would be responsible for loading it back into the front of the truck.

All of the people appeared to be working.

umsm··on Show HN: Cilantro - Chat 1:1 with employees at companies you'd like to work at
So how does this work? How do I know the people you're chatting with are actual employees of the respective company?

Details are very sparse on the site.

umsm··on Occupy Google: Income Inequality Backlash Hits Silicon Valley
Those numbers are extremely generous.

I know a few nurses and none make $100k.

umsm··on Occupy Google: Income Inequality Backlash Hits Silicon Valley
Will this increased building activities cost less than the current housing market rate?

If a new property costs $500k to build, as a builder you would need to at least cover that cost. I can't imagine that this helps the poor unless it's government sponsored.

umsm··on Luna delivers your packages when you're home for the night
If you ship the packages directly to them, there is no reason to even think about the UPS facility.

You're suggesting as a last-minute choice to use luna? That may be harder as UPS checks IDs.

umsm··on Why Millennials Can’t Grow Up
I'll discuss the first point in the article:

He mentions that the current generation thinks it's moving faster. And he cites some inventions (the train, the telegraph, the radio, the telephone).

Well, didn't all of these "inventions" happen in THE SAME generation?

We're not talking about 5 generations between the inventions, many of them happened within years of each other. This certainly allow me to believe that technology changes people.

Look at the dinner table. Who even eats together at the dinner table? It's not a "normal" thing to do in many "modern" cultures. Even when they do, many don't even speak anymore, but instead they are on their smartphones / tablets.

I happened to know very the members of my family from the previous generation. And, to tell you the truth, things have changed A LOT within the last 100 years. Work is different, life is different, even relationships are different.

The "new problems" you refer to may be what is inherent for humans. To show disrespect, to contradict parents, etc. are all things that every young generation has to deal with. Parents are not new and neither are children.

What's different may be how the generations deal with these inherent traits. What people considered to work in the 1900's probably won't work nowadays.

umsm··on Use Project-based Interviews Instead of “GitHub”
I don't think the argument was about the misc. time it takes to do things. It takes time to commute, it takes time to shower, it even takes time to eat.

The issue is that you're working for a prospective company while not being compensated for it.
