And they don't have it anymore. Those people who _actually_ protested and got beaten and arrested by _real_ tyrannical governments are being told by their government "see I told you they hate us" while also being criticized for "not doing enough" by people like you who probably never experienced what is to live outside of the privileged 13% humans who are born in stable democracies.
ulzeraj··on On anti-crypto toxicity
That’s not what I’ve wrote. I’ve wrote about exporting goods and ideas to their _people_ not buying gas from their government.

IMO we should do the opposite. We should bombard those countries with our shit. Our cheap services, our shows, our food, our way of life. Hire their engineers. Give them tech like Uber and crupto to create a nightmare for their control freak governors. Erode and drain their funds. Capture the hearts of their young. But instead Russians are listening to their government say "See I told you they hate us".

That's our western perspective. Apparently NFTs and financialization are an ethereum and clones thing. Bitcoin has placed a ton of focus on cheap payments on the Lightning Network. Monero is focusing on privacy. Our media is hyper focused on tech bros getting rich on monkey pictures but out there people in Nigeria and Sudan are using Bitcoin and Tether as their life line. Ucranians did it too and that's the only option for Russian content creators who are mostly against Putin's regime. Yeah yeah scammy tether but for them its leagues better than the hyper inflated money they have available.

Lukashenko has been belarus president since the fall of the USSR. Do you really think they ever had a chance at a fair election? What can be said of Russia then? Didn't they just used KGB strategies to poison the strongest opositor Navalny?

> because the places I've lived in didn't allow things to get as bad as Lukashenko and Putin's regimes are

Was it you or people who fought and died decades or centuries ago to achieve the presumably stable democracy you enjoy today? Please do not misunderstand I'm not saying your activism or causes are not important but trying to tell you that things are really tough outside the comfort zone of the first world.

I'm sorry but is just seems cruel, unfair and childish to expect that by starving people living in dictatorships they will just topple their corrupt government.

Something like the Belarusians who went to the streets to protest against a fraudulent election and got violently crushed by their police state? The same "evil complacent" Belarusians that are also being sanctioned now?

When was the last time you've left the safety of your home to put your life on risk to protest against your government?

> Yes, the average Russian citizen is excluded from the rest of the world, and will bear the brunt of the impact. As they should, because they're the ones who mostly sat idly and allowed all of this to happen.

Speaking for a point of privilege right here aren't we?

Do they? https://www.bbc.com/news/business-59689581

Also have you thought about the novel idea of old school policing to catch criminals instead of collaterally damaging the lives every single human in the world other than the 13% privileged who happen to be citizens of stable democracies?

ulzeraj··on On anti-crypto toxicity
I guess its time for a reality check: Putin oligarchs are still filthy rich, the ruble has come back to pre-war levels while average Russian citizens who have been excluded from the rest of the world.

I've never heard of a bitcoin or Ethereum deterministic wallet being canceled because someone found out its owner is from Iran or Venezuela. That's a huge improvement over the crap that is the current financial system.

I bet they are really proud of that scrolling graph effect and it is quite cool but it makes that part a bit confusing to read.

Also Itanium.
ulzeraj··on The worst part of working from home is now haunting reopened offices
Talk about privilege here. Just this week I've receive an e-mail from my employer stating that due to the influx of Ukrainian immigrants most of the main cities are full and people are encouraged to look for accommodation in nearby satellite cities. I'm used to 2 hours commute stripping away 4 hours of my free time. Not US. Good luck finding accommodation near business centers.

I'd suggest something like building from Gitlab CI jobs with Runners running on dedicated VM or spinning temporary Windows containers. Of course that might be shallow as I don't know the complexities of your project.
ulzeraj··on ReVanced
Maybe but if the solution is throwing more money into hardware I'd rather get something like an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield.
ulzeraj··on ReVanced
It is a RockPro64. The stock image offered by Pine is borderline useless barebones without the store. Some complicated process involving connecting an usb-c cable and running ADB from Android SDK is necessary.

I also tried some Android distribution called Slash TV which seems to be kinda complete but the videos keep defaulting to 480p even after I set my preferences to high quality. It seems Slash TV is a one man's project and it hasn't received an upgrade in a while.

I was surprised how much of a nice product Librelec is but all the YT apps for Kodi (Youtube, Tubed) are in this broken state due to some API changes.

ulzeraj··on ReVanced
I have a Sharp TV on my living room and the YT app crashes everytime a certain type of ad is played after the video starts. I don't know if its the video codec or if the TV is having a hard time going back to the original video. Out of nowhere a 5 second chocolate or cheese ad plays and the TV OS completely crashes.

Tried attaching an ARM SBC with Librelec but the state of the Youtube apps are extremely broken in a way that you need api keys from a google cloud account and that allows you to only play videos. Your subscriptions and everything are not imported. PS4 runs fine but I don't want to run a 100W console to watch YT videos.

Meanwhile I've found out that most of my favorite channels (mostly tech and retro stuff) are also uploading to Odyssey as a sort of backup strategy. That works very well for me.

Fixed. Thanks.
ulzeraj··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
The Gnome-ish shell on Pop 21.04 running on my full AMD laptop (5900hx cpu/apu, 6800m gpu) works smooth as butter. It games great and I'm using with 2 monitors one being 165Hz 1440p and the other 60Hz 4k. I had to enable Wayland on the login manager config files.

No driver installation required. I have no regrets for ditching my Nvidia RTX 3060 hardware.

I'm not really sure about this. Games like Vampire the Masquerade comes to mind.

Not a slav. I must comment tho on the website aesthetic. I was thrown back to the 90s as soon as I clicked the link.

Where is this data coming from? I have a rare Italian surname and this finder puts a very small circle (1-5) on the very region my grand grand father departed to America in 1895.

> Walking around Tokyo, I often get the feeling of being stuck in a 1980’s vision of the future

Osaka is probably where you'll feel most like you're in an 80s cyberpunk movie.

Try Doutonbori in Osaka or Shin Sekai at night. There is an outdoor from a Blade Runner scene that's still there intact in Doutonbori (Glico). The atmosphere is very Willian Gibson-y.

> I want to be able to quickly resolve any issues in person, not over voice call or slack, and I think that an environment where someone can tap me on the shoulder when they need help leads to overall higher productivity, even if individual productivity suffers temporarily.

This comment right here made me angry and for reasons totally different from the discussion. Its about people who thinks they they are entitled to interrupt my workflow to solve their issues.

ulzeraj··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
> I know a lot of young(-ish) educated Russians, and at least 50% (by my estimate) kind of agree with Putin that "they were left no other choice"

I grew up in South America. If you knew the kind of crap we are fed by our own very teachers that vilify american citizens as invading thieves without any care to make a distinction about the people and the government. I clearly remember during a certain heavy metal concert the keyboard player innocently tried to make a solo of the country national hymn followed by the american hymn and he was attacked by an angry mob of retards throwing things while literally chanting "Bin Laden". And yeah I was young and I thought "the yankee bastard had it coming".

I was in my 30s when I started realizing its all bullshit and the american people don't really have a say about the atrocities their government is causing in foreign lands. We've been fed with propaganda and programmed to hate people we don't know.

ulzeraj··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Taxes stopped supporting war in the US a long ago because people don’t like paying for wars they don’t support. The “department of defense” finances its wars by borrowing from the FED. These credit card wars inflate the money supply instead and although everyone still loses its a sneaky way to steal money from people.

I’ve experienced more chilling temperatures in a southern brasilian house during winter than my current apartment in poland. I didn’t even had to turn on heating this winter while in São Paulo I often had to use multiple blankets to sleep.

I think that its all about the windows. In warm climate regions they are made to allow air circulation.

Rent, property and living prices being adjusted to the purchasing power of the western visitors driving the original low income population away from whichever region gets more popular.

Its similar to what I call hipsterization. Rich and privileged persons moving to an undeveloped area they deem cool, fancy cafes are opened and real state prices skyrocket.
