tristanb··on Show HN: WireHole combines WireGuard, Pi-hole, and Unbound with an easy UI
Does this have any mdns reflection?
tristanb··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
That takes a really really long time in a high cost of living city. It is essentially a mortgage.
tristanb··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
Good. These things have been a real danger around my neighborhood. They are not currently safe. They do not understand crosswalks, and will drive towards pedestrians who are on them until they move. Additionally every time i've encountered a safety issue Cruise have not been accessible to take the report. So I went above and beyond to make sure i reported it. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv-autonomous-vehicles-feedba...
tristanb··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
Another perspective, my partner is a physician. She makes a pretty healthy wage, but that wage goes into paying off her $500k of student loans that got her there.
tristanb··on Cruise's Solution to Robotaxis and Emergency Vehicles: Let Them Move the Car
I've had several really negative interactions with Cruise on San Francisco streets. More worryingly when I tried to bring them to Cruise's attention I got no response. I've had cars drive aggressively in a stop start motion towards me and my kids on a crosswalk, such that I had to stop in the middle of a busy street where we had right of way, to allow the Cruise vehicle to barrel past. A situation that would have resulted in being pretty dam pissed at a human driver. I don't think they should be on the roads.
tristanb··on GitHub Copilot loses an average of $20 per user per month
Im not getting $20 of value as is.
tristanb··on GitHub Copilot loses an average of $20 per user per month
I use Copilot... Or rather I pay for it. I pretty much always end up using ChatGPT4. I honestly haven't had a very good experience with Copilot. It never "learns" anything. It doesn't remember where my imports are, it gives me the wrong paths all the time. Sure occasionally it will write a nice comment for me when I make a new prop, but other than that it's not as good for writing code as GPT4, and its auto suggestions are pretty weak. Wondering if others have different opinions.
tristanb··on Russian Special Forces deploy Sosna-N anti-sniper robot in Ukraine
Seems very fixable with a Ukrainian 50cal round.
tristanb··on It's Cheaper to Live on a Boat Than Rent an Apartment in These U.S. Cities
You pay property tax on boats.
tristanb··on Orion: iPad as an external HDMI display for video game consoles
That is my plan too! Wish the ipad could send its keyboard and mouse to the server as well.
tristanb··on To build ships that break ice, U.S. must relearn to cut steel
Just wait a few years, there won't be any ice.
tristanb··on F-35 can’t be found after pilot ejected
it wouldn't be an iPhone then.
tristanb··on Ask HN: What are some well-designed websites?
The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman is a classic.
tristanb··on Ask HN: What are some well-designed websites?
My entire career has been spent fixing engineers perspective on design.
tristanb··on Launch HN: HyLight (YC S23) – Hydrogen airships to inspect energy infrastructure
If you dump hydrogen, you land.
tristanb··on Cellebrite asks cops to keep its technology secret
I replied to my first comment.
tristanb··on Cellebrite asks cops to keep its technology secret
Sorry, I just saw there was interest in this. They were able to get everything off of an older iPhone, i think two generations prior to now, (i'm sorry I can't remember the exact model) but for updated (current) iPhones they were not able to get a full disk image, but could get "some" data. (I'm sorry I again can't give specifics as I don't remember, but it would be metadata). Essentially we were told Greykey keeps updating the software to find new ways to extract the data. We were also told it didn't work if the phone had been powered off. For the phones that it did work on, it extracted everything from the disk and then Cellbrite went through the data to present it to the user.

The Greykey device plugs into the phone, requires the phone to not have been powered off. The untrusted USB settings also help prevent it from working.

tristanb··on New California rules would crush rooftop solar for renters
It's utterly ridiculous.
tristanb··on Live worm found in Australian woman’s brain
Cue Ivermectin rush V2.0 ....
tristanb··on Zoom CEO says employees can't be as innovative or get to know each other on Zoom
I cannot stand Zoom. I had that it tries to install its crapware on the computer.I find Google Meet to be perfect for what we need.
tristanb··on NY Times Rides in Waymo Robotaxis in SF
These things should not be allowed to drive as is. I had one ignore a crosswalk and just drive at our family. Alternating between aggressively accelerating towards us and braking. As opposed to the normal behavior of waiting behind the line at the prior junction.
tristanb··on Cellebrite asks cops to keep its technology secret
I just served on a jury for a that made extensive use of Cellbrite, Greykey and cell tower triangulation. It was crazy how routine this is on law enforcement, and how much they got from an iPhone. (Everything). Case has now completed but it completed because of that evidence.
tristanb··on Ask HN: What hardware are you running for your home server?
Rackmount NAS, 3 Intel NUCs with a rackmount adapter. Small rack in a closet.
tristanb··on Grammarly will discontinue the Text Editor SDK
Im fine with that. Most of their dev is in Ukraine. F#ck Russia.
tristanb··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
The Borei Class is not diving to 950 meters (unless its sinking) :)
tristanb··on Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering
I don't think it is on this "sub". I believe I read they used a material that degraded over time in water.
tristanb··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
This is incredibly annoying. I migrated all my domains from Badger to Google Domains. I'm really losing any remaining faith I have in Google, they kill any products that are remotely usable.
tristanb··on Tesla’s “Self-Driving” System Never Should Have Been Allowed on the Road
Im so fed up with this click garnering nonsense. I've had two teslas, and driven probably 200k miles on them since 2018, the majority of freeway miles on autopilot. How many times has autopilot created a dangerous situation? Zero. Zero times. Do I play with my phone and fall asleep while using it? No of course not. But it removes the cognitive load of making micro adjustments to the course of the vehicle. Has it done odd stuff? Yeah for a while it would brake for bridge shadows. Did this cause a ten car pile-up? No of course not, it was rectified by a tap on the accelerator. For me the issue is clear. Bad drivers are bad drivers, given any tool, they will remain idiots.
tristanb··on Why aren't black box flight recorders better?
We absolutely do not know the captain did anything malicious , and he could have been a hero. So let’s not make statements like that.
tristanb··on Octopuses, crabs and lobsters recognised as sentient beings under UK law (2021)
I thought crabs have less neurons than a cockroach.
