tmalsburg2··on Google Docs will now use canvas based rendering
Which makes you wonder why it doesn't work in Firefox (where it='copy & paste in Google docs').
tmalsburg2··on Google Docs will now use canvas based rendering
Perhaps Java applets were not such a bad idea after all?
tmalsburg2··on Use Alacritty instead of Termite
The thing that got me annoyed was the bold claim that it‘s the fastest terminal emulator even though many people reported that other terminal emulators were faster. For instance, urxvt was 3 to 5 times faster last time I checked (in addition to also being rock solid).
tmalsburg2··on Emacs native compilation merged into trunk
Wonderful. I've been using the native compilation branch for months now and have had zero problems with it. I would estimate the speed increase to be a factor of 2 to 4, very noticeable and game-changing in some cases. Amazing work!
tmalsburg2··on EU proposing to regulate the use of Bayesian estimation
Perhaps that's because American tech loves to stick it to the rest of the world? Just speculating.
tmalsburg2··on Mars becomes the 2nd planet that has more computers running Linux than Windows
The rover actually can't mine bitcoin because by the time it manages to create a block and sends it back to Earth, the block chain has already moved on and the block is obsolete. I guess this means that Bitcoin is never going to be an interplanetary currency. Paper money is perhaps not so bad after all.
tmalsburg2··on Chick Corea has died
What a coincidence! I bought some of Corea's records 20 years ago but hadn't listened to them in a long time. But on the day of his death my 2-yo son pulled out one of them, and we listened to it. A recording of a concert he gave in 1978 together with Herbie Hancock [1]. They are playing like gods, absolutely breathtaking. Good starting point if you haven't made contact with Corea's work yet.

tmalsburg2··on Over 700k paintings from the Rijksmuseum online copyright free
Can someone please write an Emacs command that shows me a random painting from this data set?
tmalsburg2··on GPT-Neo – Building a GPT-3-sized model, open source and free
I imagine recreating the model will be computationally cheaper because they will not have to sift through the same huge hyperparameter space as the initial GPT-3 team had to.
tmalsburg2··on Nikon Is ending 70 years of camera production in Japan
And some long-forgotten German manufacturers as well.
tmalsburg2··on Shen in 15 Minutes
Shen looks like a dream come true to me. Some key features: pattern matching, optional static type checking, macros, integrated Prolog, optional lazy evaluation. I wish I could use this in my work. In case you're into Emacs and would like to play with it there is an Elisp implementation with a REPL [0]. There are also implementations in Python, JavaScript, C, and others [1].

tmalsburg2··on Apple M1 vs. Ryzen 3900X vs. Intel I9 in Software Development
Why is the naive-bayes benchmark (first graph) such an extreme outlier? M1 is ~10 times slower on this benchmark whereas it is faster than the competition on almost any other benchmarks.
tmalsburg2··on Pornhub just purged all unverified content from the platform
> Their entire business is built on stolen content uploaded by anonymous users,

Not disagreeing with you, but, to be fair, that was exactly Youtube's recipe for success, and still is to some extent. I never understood how Youtube could get away with that.

tmalsburg2··on EmacsConf 2020 Talks
Over the years I have exchanged messages and worked with many of the speakers at this conference, but I have never had the opportunity to meet any of them in real life. It is so nice to finally see their faces and hear their voices. Thanks, Covid, I suppose.
tmalsburg2··on Germany raided 83 homes in coordinated raids against online hate speech
No, the quote is only shortened a bit for convenience. Please visit the Wikipedia page and check for yourself.
tmalsburg2··on Germany raided 83 homes in coordinated raids against online hate speech
No, the "total ban" mentioned in the BBC article existed only in the context of video games. Displaying the swastika has been allowed for many purposes for quite a while.
tmalsburg2··on Germany raided 83 homes in coordinated raids against online hate speech
Displaying a swastika is not illegal in Germany. It's only illegal if you use it for nazi propaganda purposes. Stop spreading misinformation. Relevant quote [1]:

"Whoever domestically disseminates or produces ... the contents of which are intended to further the aims of a former National Socialist organization ... shall be punished ..."

tmalsburg2··on Yann LeCun on GPT-3
Interesting. As a reading researcher, I imagine that this could potentially introduce subtle and difficult to spot bugs when you get a proposed completion that looks about right i.e. close enough to what you imagined. Has this been an issue in your experience?
tmalsburg2··on Logs, Tails, Long Tails (2013)
Ah, that's likely the interpretation that the author had in mind. But it didn't help that he wrote log probability when he actually talked about log probability density.
tmalsburg2··on Logs, Tails, Long Tails (2013)
No, the logarithm is only defined for positive values. Plus probability densities are strictly non-negative. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logarithm
tmalsburg2··on Logs, Tails, Long Tails (2013)
It's possible that I misunderstood the text but what's the alternative interpretation of "The log function asymptotes at 0"? Also note that the text says log probabilities when it actually refers to log densities.
tmalsburg2··on Logs, Tails, Long Tails (2013)
Interesting article but with some factual imprecisions: 1. A bit nit-picky but the Beta distribution has support [0, 1]. So the distribution in the graph is not a Beta. It's probably a shifted and scaled Beta. 2. The probability density can be arbitrarily high, which means that the log of the density can't have an upper bound at 0. Probability is bounded at 1 but probability density isn't. The fact that none of the example distributions passes zero is a mere coincident. I'm surprised to see this beginner's mistake in an otherwise insightful article.
tmalsburg2··on Emacs-Helm development is now stalled
Why the negativity? Helm has served me really well for pretty much every day for the last 10 years. I'm extremely thankful for it.
tmalsburg2··on Self-driving cars learn to read the body language of people on the street
You're assuming that the latest version would not have produced this accident, but do we actually known this?
tmalsburg2··on Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing
Since this post is receiving downvotes, I'd like to know which part of the HN guidelines it is violating.
tmalsburg2··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
Integrity should be woven into the fabric of a company's culture. It can't possibly be a role. Making it a role looks like window-dressing and effectively an empty gesture.
tmalsburg2··on Iranian teen shocks Magnus Carlsen to win $14k prize
This is not a proof that he was commonly referred to as "Norwegian teen". The internet is vast and a proof of existence has little weight. But any data is better than not data, so +1 to you.
tmalsburg2··on Iranian teen shocks Magnus Carlsen to win $14k prize
Nothing wrong with pointing out that he's young. But he still has a name, and you've got to wonder about the significance of him being Iranian.
tmalsburg2··on Iranian teen shocks Magnus Carlsen to win $14k prize
Why is Alireza Firouzja being referred to as "Iranian teen"? He's an international top player. I doubt that Carlsen was referred to as "Norwegian teen" when he was ranking in the top 25.

p.s: As always: responses > downvotes.

tmalsburg2··on Ask HN: What is the best way to learn Lisp in 2020?
This is how I learned Lisp. It's not just a good way to learn lisp, it's also fun and has some nice side effects.
