timothyduong··on Why today's phones are so boooooring?
Because many things that are not boring are gimmicks.

I think of the Porsche 911 as a good example, beautiful but boring in its design iteration. It’s considered the top of its class in so many fields.

That’s how I feel about many things such as the aforementioned hd600. Classic design and outstanding performance.

timothyduong··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
iOS users need to have the iPhone 15 pro.. so everyone else is also cooked on iOS.
timothyduong··on Microsoft Recall should make you consider Linux
I don't think majority really care about their 'privacy' and would not switch in the first place due to Recall.
timothyduong··on Ticketmaster confirms data breach with a SEC filing
You’d think for all the additional booking fees that they’re known for charging that they’d invest a little more into security of their infrastructure both internally and externally…

Could apply this for anything complex and packaged.

I’m annoyed that I can’t buy particular engines off the shelf and use them in my bespoke approach, why dont car manufacturers give the approach that crate engine providers do?

Was very common for drug dealers to break their phones on being caught

timothyduong··on Microsoft starts testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu
The frustrating part is that on my older Win10 laptop, it goes "This PC doesn't currently meeting the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11, Get the details and see if there are things you can do in the PC Health Check app." in the Windows Update section.

Ok, I've installed that, and there's no way I can update to Windows 11, there's no TPM chip.

Go back to Windows Update, the prompt is still there, it has no connection to the fact that my laptop cannot physically update to Win11 nor does it know I've run the PC Health Check app multiple times.

Like, seriously? Stop wasting my screen real-estate with an ad for a product that cannot be used on the device. Hitting X makes it go away until my next reboot.

Catch 22? Let the robots scrape cause you want to be indexed, but at the same time, you don’t want to give the data scraped away for free.

I mean realistically, shouldn’t the news outlets just not let those articles be scraped and be done with this debate?

timothyduong··on Show HN: macOS Reminder Sync for Obsidian Tasks
Hi Rahil, yep, just as you said! Thank you! I'm waiting for the update to sync into the App Store to test this.
timothyduong··on Show HN: macOS Reminder Sync for Obsidian Tasks
Feedback: - It works! and really easily too! Thank you - Things I wish it could do: Sync based on #tag #metadata. I use 'Checklist' obsidian plugin and there's check-boxes that I throw in and there's 'checklist' items with tag name (e.g., #TODO) that I use to actually collate things that are to-be-done.

timothyduong··on Pixel owners report problems after installing January 2024 Google Play update
I did a little anecdotal Search using reddit, added “bricked” to iosBetas and Android and found android had more recent results.

There’s issues with software which affect a function then there’s issues that ruin the whole phone…

timothyduong··on Build your own hi-fi ear defenders
The trick is to add a bit of Lubricant. I use a little bit of spit.

Source: rode motorcycle daily and had to use earplugs cause of how loud it was, spit lube allowed easy snug fit off deep ear plugs

timothyduong··on Build your own hi-fi ear defenders
You can get custom moulded ear plugs that you mould at home for about 20-30 USD.

They’re not as good as etymotics but a lot comfier.

timothyduong··on Pixel 8 Pro owners complain about display bumps
It is their duty to perform QA.

Just like how car manufacturers don't make speakers but get B&W or Bose, if those speakers are at fault, do we send the car to Bose/B&W or to the car dealership/repair centre?

timothyduong··on The right-to-repair movement is just getting started
Re: number 2.

What if the current standard sucks and your new attempt as a start up is objectively better?

Example: you develop a new connector that has bandwidth that is 10x better than the existing, so you can house different parts that would be considered “non-standard”

timothyduong··on U.S. cities consider banning "right on red" laws amid rise in pedestrian deaths
In Australia the registration for private road vehicles is based on the weight of the vehicle (weight class based), which in my mind makes sense as the heavier the vehicle the more wear and tear, and impact to the shared roads.

So yes, I agree with the sentiment that larger vehicles should cost more. They’re literally using more road than others.

timothyduong··on As Smartphone Industry Sputters, the iPhone Expands Its Dominance
I’m stuck in a captcha loop on this link :( anyone else? Doing captchas for days but no forward to site.

Edit: must’ve been my wifi. Switched to cellular and it’s all gravy.

It’s a scale, the majority of colleagues that have an e-bike state they don’t want to rock up to work in sweat.

If exercise was the primary focus alongside a commuter, then getting a non-electric bike would be likely the focus.

Source: I just bought a bicycle and went through months of asking colleagues and friends their opinions on e-bikes. I ended up with a bike cause I’m not planning to commute

timothyduong··on YouTube Threatens to Cut Off Ad Blocker Users After Just Three Ad-Less Vids

timothyduong··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
Because a printer can’t function without ink, that’s its sole purpose unless it is a multi function printer.
