throwahey··on Android devices should skip the iPhone X notch, not embrace it
I was initially bothered, particularly with the rounded corners. However since the X has nearly the same size display as the plus phones, really the area that is rounded off is just extra pixels. I'm not missing out on anything by having rounded corners, or the notch, rather I am gaining the extra display area over the plus phones. That changed my attitude about it.
throwahey··on How We Learned to Love the Bill of Rights
It scares me that there are people who think any type of resistance against the government would be hopeless, and would prefer to disarm the public for a false sense of security.

One thing I don't get is that those who are anti-gun don't seem to have much faith in the government to begin with, what makes them think that they won't continue to take away rights as soon as the public is disarmed, given that it has happened time and time again all over the world.

throwahey··on How We Learned to Love the Bill of Rights
So you are suggesting we just accept enslavement? Can you explain to me how that isn't stockholm syndrome? I'm sorry but even if the odds are zero, I among many others would rather go down fighting to protect our liberties. These are rights given to us by our creator, not government.

We should not need to rely on the morals of the military.

throwahey··on Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+
Most if not all smartphones have a fixed aperture. A lower F-stop allows more light to enter through the lens. This is advantageous in low light but during the day it may cause pictures to wash out. Because ISO can only go so high before minor hand movement seriously blurs a photo, it is better to have a larger aperture, again for low-light conditions. So a single adjustable lens over a single sensor can allow for a variety of ideal combinations depending on the conditions.
throwahey··on Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+
Interesting, if there is one thing I hope Apple takes away from this, it is the adjustable aperture. But time will tell whether a moving part will last long on a smartphone.

Though I fear that, like with Google's dual CMOS, they are too committed to the multiple cameras and removing one may come off as a downgrade to consumers whether or not a single one can satisfy all the same functions.

throwahey··on How Apple is paving the way to a ‘cloud dictatorship’ in China
That first link does not even demonstrate what the article title claims. Apple offered assistance in the same way it always has, providing iCloud access logs, IP's, etc. They did not help the FBI unlock the phone.

The other errors they have had lately on the other hand do seem malicious, but I suspect either serious fuckups on engineer side, or people being paid/blackmailed by intelligence agencies to introduce backdoors.

They actively remove posts from that sub when they hit the front page.
throwahey··on Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Steps Aside, Focuses on Initialized Capital
Reddit is not even pretending to be fair and balanced. They lean far to the left (or pander to them) and the front page is often filled with anti-Trump, pro-Democrat propaganda.

Free and fair discussion is a lost cause on that platform, 45 has made anyone with conservative values an enemy.

throwahey··on DNA tests on ancient skeleton reveal First modern Britons had “dark to black” skin
I'm skeptical that this discovery is anything but political. There is far too much psuedo-science recently pushing the idea of non-whites inhabiting Europe before whites. I don't understand the goal of such flaky publishings, but the anti-european sentiment is strong. I'm reminded of the viking with "arabic" jewelry.
throwahey··on Alaska is warming so fast, quality-control algorithms are rejecting the data
That dataset is limited, it’s vast and accurate for around 100 years then the quality and data points drop exponentially the further back you look.

Plenty of people agree that there is not enough data to draw conclusions about such a complex issue. Way to make this political for no reason.

throwahey··on Alaska is warming so fast, quality-control algorithms are rejecting the data
Consensus is not conclusive. It takes a special kind of hubris for someone to think they understand climate change with the minute dataset we have.

We don't have enough data to guess next month's weather let alone the possible effects in 10+ years.

throwahey··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
My response to the parent comment was why they are forcing their modems on people, not regarding the JS injection, which I was equally horrified to see. There is a reason I keep JS disabled by default.
throwahey··on Alaska is warming so fast, quality-control algorithms are rejecting the data
> The missing station was just the result of rapid, man-made climate change, with a runaway effect on the Arctic.

I'm not a climate change denier, but isn't it disingenuous to label this as man-made. There isn't enough science around how the climate functions in general to make the assumption that in this specific area, the changes are a result of humans rather than natural cycles we have yet to identify because of the very little data we have.

throwahey··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
There is a reason they are doing this. After signing up for Xfinity I noticed that the modem we were leasing was broadcasting a public access point with no way to disable it. I purchased my own modem immediately. Then some time later they rolled out their mobile services, which you guessed it, rely’s on those open access points and Sprint as a fall-back. So now customers are paying monthly to host Xfinity mobile services.

I will admit that it is clever, but this should be transparent and customers should not be subsidizing the cost.

throwahey··on Ask HN: How will the 2018 Tax Cut plan impact Engineers?
There are Republicans all over California, in fact the only blue districts are the major population centers.

I anticipate they will vote with the party, as in either case once the Tax Bill passes their blue constituents won't be happy.

throwahey··on Ask HN: How will the 2018 Tax Cut plan impact Engineers?
I'd like a citation on your first statement. All things considered, I don't believe either state is contributing more than they get back.

If you like to contribute to those services, you are more than welcome to, but they should not be mandatory contributions. My own view is the smaller the government, the better. Federal and State governments have their place, but it should be up to citizens to decide what matters to them.

throwahey··on Ask HN: How will the 2018 Tax Cut plan impact Engineers?
Understandably most people in high-tax states would be upset by this, but I see it a as a positive overall. This will put more pressure on those states to reduce their tax rates, lest they lose the workers.

Ultimately, I don't think that states like California use tax money responsibly, so the lower the tax rate the better. Democrats will have two options, to lower taxes or lose seats.

throwahey··on Tesla Semi
Diesel trucks with sleepers are not cheap, brand new they cost upwards of $150,000. If Tesla's price point is $250-300k I think it would be fair.
throwahey··on A Green Beret Found Two SEALs’ Illicit Cash. Then He Was Killed
No he's being down voted by sensible people who believe in punishment that fits the crime. Putting a murderer to death will not bring back those lost, but at least it may deter others from doing the same.
throwahey··on CIA created code to impersonate Kaspersky Lab: WikiLeaks
There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that (outside of the Clinton camp and Podesta) and given Wikileaks track record, it's highly unlikely.
throwahey··on Elon Musk Is Over-Rated
Did you just reply with a second account?

I hope you weren't up-voting your own post with that...

throwahey··on Elon Musk Is Over-Rated
No I read the whole thing. He has done far more than many in his position, and you are downplaying that. This type of self-gratifying, armchair criticism is precisely the thing that nobody cares to hear.
throwahey··on Elon Musk Is Over-Rated
Way to downplay the significant success of one of the most prominent magnates in modern history.

This blogpost certainly doesn't make you come off as a tremendous moron.

throwahey··on In two-thirds of heterosexual couples, the man is at least a year older
But they do, far more often I see older men with younger women. Rarely do I see the opposite, at least, as far as long-term relationships go.
throwahey··on Text-only NPR
Can someone explain to me why a news website needs HTTPS? Barring pages that require entry of financial information, why would you need to encrypt this kind of traffic? Is people snooping on what news articles you read a real concern?

Genuine question here.

throwahey··on Generals sway Trump on Afghan policy using pictures of Kabul women in miniskirts
Whatever the reason, I am glad he allowed his mind to be changed about such an important issue. Exiting Afghanistan now would throw away whatever little progress the previous two administrations made in the region. It would be a repeat of Iraq, hell it would be a repeat of post Cold War Afghanistan.

I long for the day I can return to the land of my father and help rebuild it.

throwahey··on Reserve the 418 status code

throwahey··on Harvard University's 2017 intake 'majority non-white' for first time
Through no fault of their own, white people now have a harder time getting into universities, medical schools, and even employment compared to a lesser qualified minority. This is terribly regressive, and no doubt a result of leftist pressure.

I'm all for giving everyone a fair chance, but I would never hire someone based on their race. I will pick the best person for the job even if that means having a team composed 100% of white males. And for what it's worth, I'm not even white.

throwahey··on Scott's Cheap Flights: Growing a small side project into a booming business
Hate to piggyback but I noticed that whenever this service gets posted on Reddit there are dozens of accounts that reply addressing Scott by name and have little to say.

Upon checking their comment history, I saw that most users hadn't posted anything for months, or even ever. It was clear that there was some kind of voting manipulation going on, and as reddit goes, if something gains traction it's bound to get upvoted just because.

It's a bit like Candy Japan, who posts here once a month with very little to say, and nothing vaguely technical in his articles. These kinds of posts just seem like blatant advertising. What are the rules for self-promotion of services on HN? It just seems dirty when there is a half-hearted article advertising a service without being labeled as an ad.

Throwaway of course, because I'd rather not get attacked by some bots.
