theguppydream··on MKUltra
This is great if you read it in a Fox Mulder voice.
theguppydream··on Apple is turning William Gibson's Neuromancer into a TV series
The book's first line really sets up a perfect opening shot for a TV version.
theguppydream··on Our Universe wasn’t empty, even before the Big Bang
There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful article.
theguppydream··on AI song featuring fake Drake and Weeknd vocals pulled from streaming services
Ghostface Killah is yet to sue Action Bronson.
theguppydream··on Writing is a single-player game
'I hope you die. I hope we both die' fits pretty well with Moby Dick too
theguppydream··on Some thoughts on writing
The story goes that Hunter S Thompson typed out the Great Gatsby to get the flow of the writing. Quite a different approach to his infamous daily routine.
theguppydream··on The Botanist Who Defied Stalin
I enjoyed 99% Invisible's podcast on the seed vault, which I had no idea about prior to listening

theguppydream··on James Baldwin, Here and Elsewhere
What is a good starting point for reading Baldwin?
theguppydream··on Who Wants to Be a Thousandaire? (2011)
Brilliant story. This reminds me so much of David Foster Wallace's 'Little Expressionless Animals,' I wonder if DFW was aware of the broadcast and took it as inspiration
theguppydream··on The Cat-and-Mouse Game of the Modern Penalty Kick
Here's a unique penalty technique from Ezequiel Calvente, the opposite to the stutter technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lXnoQdEunE&ab_channel=Rosla...
theguppydream··on Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner on their 70-year friendship
Sorry To Bother You from 2018 has a particular scene that runs counter to this idea. Very funny too
theguppydream··on Mere
Really interesting. The whole article feels like an argument against his point; pointing out the varied meanings, implications and stigmas of 'mere' or 'able' just reminds me how great that ambiguity is for literature.

The line from Yeats' 'Second Coming' works with both meanings, mere meaning pure anarchy reflecting the nightmarish time and being a great oxymoron, and mere meaning small, less noticeable anarchy fitting the subtle terror of 'the falcon cannot hear the falconer.' Even without that as an initial intention, it shows how language and great writing both evolve together over time.

theguppydream··on The outcry over deaths on Amazon's warehouse floor
James Bloodworth's book Hired is a good companion piece. It covers what it's like to work in an Amazon warehouse in the UK, among other low paid jobs. I'm not sure if it was the tagline, but I think 'the last thing you'll buy on Amazon' would be a decent slogan for the book.

He has a tendency to get a little purple with his prose, but if you can get past that it's a good precis of low pay jobs.

Here's a link to the Goodreads page. https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/37780792-hired

theguppydream··on The outcry over deaths on Amazon's warehouse floor
The Verge had a long read on life of Facebook moderators that is worth a read if you have the time. https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/25/18229714/cognizant-facebo...
theguppydream··on The “greased sled” theory of Stonehenge
Bill Bryson on Stonehenge:

"Can you imagine trying to talk six hundred people into helping you drag a fifty-ton stone eighteen miles across the countryside and muscle it into an upright position, and then saying, 'Right, lads! Another twenty like that...and then we can party!'"

(Yes, I only know that quote from Civ 6)

theguppydream··on The Story of Metal Gear Solid’s English Translation
Kojima's a good example of how limitless creative freedom doesn't produce the best work. Tarantino is another. Even the best creative minds need a voice questioning whether a vampire licking a knife over and over again is a good addition to a spy thriller.
theguppydream··on Fully Automated Luxury Communism
Unherd's review was a good read, the reviewer talking about how the book was wrong in an interesting way. https://unherd.com/2019/06/are-you-ready-for-fully-automated...
theguppydream··on Ecuador to Expel Assange Within ‘Hours to Days,’ WikiLeaks Says
If you're interested in Assange, check out Andrew O'Hagan's piece 'Ghosting' about being hired to ghost write Assange's autobiography. It's in his collection 'The Secret Life.'
theguppydream··on The First Photo Ever Created by a Japanese Photographer (2016)
Love the big suit like David Byrne in Stop Making Sense.
theguppydream··on Disclosure of autism at work holds risks and benefits
In the higher positions, yes.
theguppydream··on ‘I Fundamentally Believe That My Time at Reddit Made the World a Worse Place’
That's important from a product point of view. I see redditors unhappy about a specific community, I'm always confused why they're visiting that community.

It's a good distinction, but it doesn't solve the issue that problematic subreddits will continue to exist, even if I've customised Reddit to avoid them. I understood that was more Dan McComas's issue with Reddit, and with Twitter.
