the_cramer··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
You have to add context to it. Steamdeck is imho no device for your grandma or any non-tech savy user. (Even in this i am not sure anymore for basic gaming.) HN is a site full of very tech savy users.

That is the reason why people here like it very much, because they are able to work out the kinks. So screaming "marketing bots" is not fair, is it?

I am not sure about the future of Steamdeck on the broad market, but i believe it's strong step in a good direction.

How do you play these? I tried ONI on steamdeck and it felt clunky compared to KBM...
the_cramer··on Windows 11: a spyware machine out of users' control
Aside some AAA title and rare edge caves, gaming on Linux is quite good. Some tinkering necesary and of course wine, but it works.

Sincerely, a fresh Linux User with not much knowledge.

the_cramer··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
Why? Because HN people actually like it?
the_cramer··on Ask HN: Why are toggle switches replacing checkboxes? Isn't on/off less obvious?
Three state checkboxes are available nearly everywhere, not sure what is better about that in toggles.
the_cramer··on Elon Musk’s $44B education on free speech
I think we should define "power" here. My stance is that POTUS may have more direct influence on single entities, like CEOs or companies. Social media however can be used as tool to influence how people think, the majority of the populus. From influencing to straight up brain washing.

I think that this bottom-up influence is far more powerful in the long run than a direct top-down control style if you want to achieve certain beliefs, mindsets, obedience.

the_cramer··on Elon Musk’s $44B education on free speech
Is it? Presidency is a position. You need a heap of advisers and legal executives to handle this. I'd argue that the president themself is not as powerful in making people believe something as digital media in general is.
the_cramer··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
Jokes on you, but they changed the default branch to be named "main" instead of "master" for reasons of appropriation.
the_cramer··on Emotionally Intelligent People Use 3-Word Phrase When Criticised
Emotionally intelligent people are only one of two peers in communication. It could be that the "sender" is sending wrong signals without noticing. This is very often the case in intercultural exchange as habits, tonality and expression are very different.

The phrase is a good protection mechanism against such things. It prevents you from directly reacting negatively and maybe solve a message unwillingly disguised as (personal) attack by asking what was meant.

edit: got lost in my own sentence...

the_cramer··on Qatar World Cup critics are unprepared for the rest of this century
>I mean I can't go joking around as a Nazi in Germany

You can up to some point. Comedians do. People do. There are even Nazi marches in Germany. Although they represent a small fraction of the population and are not liked by others. But legally, you can be right if you deem so.

Well no not really. First few results are a mix of America, China and UAE...

That doesn't make it more right. I think you did not understand my remark.
the_cramer··on Qatar World Cup critics are unprepared for the rest of this century
Whataboutism. If you argue with a greater evil, nothing will ever be solved. Quatar did/does some nasty things and right now people have the possibility to boycott. Right now it's there and we will talk about it. All countries do nasty things all the time. But currently we're looking east.
the_cramer··on Always use [closed, open) intervals
This depends on use case. If you are doing a frontend layer on top of closed-open, then the frontend will have to handle the points the article is rambling about.

Users are used to selecting a daterange in closed closed format for example.

the_cramer··on Meal kit giant, HelloFresh, accused of using monkey labor to source coconut milk
Aside from a barely comprehensible lack of empathy and ethics... what is the legal situation here? Animal abuse sure... but having them work under good conditions? Would that be legal?

Don't get me wrong, monkeys should be monkeys and do monkey things. I'm just curious.

the_cramer··on Physicists rewrite a quantum rule that clashes with our universe
I have a very similar feeling, when i read about quantum superposition. It feels like a super theoretical theory. If you don't measure something it can be either state, but if you measure something it has a state, just like a entangled other piece you did not measure before.

Knowing nothing in-depth about this topic, it seems like a philosophical problem. The cat is dead and alive because you just don't know it. But it surely is one or the other, isn't it?

edit: maybe I'm confusing superposition and entanglement. I thought of these to be a similar problem in physics.

the_cramer··on It seems that the good times for online Minecraft play are over
-> Basically I was considered guilty unless I could proof my innocence

imho this is not comparable. You are considered unknown (account-wise) until you can prove that you are known. That's how a login system works.

Now why Microsoft didn't see your account, didn't accept your "proof" and left you in the rain, that's another story. A bad one. Big tech should care about the small man, they are their income after all.

Good decision on turning them the cold shoulder.

the_cramer··on How messed up was Germany's energy policy?
I am not sure if these lower costs are ever projected onto the end users. the energy prices weren't lowered since ~2000
the_cramer··on France experiencing worst drought on record
What about saving energy and not wasting water?
the_cramer··on France experiencing worst drought on record
In a german podcast a guy once said: "You won't get them with melting Icebergs and Polarbears. They're too far away".

It's true, nobody* cares about icebergs and other things they've never seen before. Just wait when the drought kicks in and more and more Problems arise. I hope then people start acting themselves instead of shouting into the social platform nirvana.

the_cramer··on Ask HN: Is anyone out there “quiet quitting” and willing to talk about it?
This. I don't want to work too. I like developing software, I like the tech world, I love the intellectual soup this and other communities brew together. But if I was free from the need of money to live without much loss of comfort, I'd rather not choose to work 40-60 hours on the same thing in front of the screen.

Therefore my approach is "I need money, you need work" let's frame the extent of that and fulfill both ends of the contract.

Maybe it's a lack of passion but I've seen so many people break because they somehow feel the need to be a "good bee" for a company. I like living and that's the most important point on my daily todo list.

the_cramer··on Congress' push to regulate Big Tech is fizzling out
How does Tesla fit in this, building a factory in Brandenburg against "some" public resistance? This case did not seem anti-competitive at all.
the_cramer··on How I went about learning Rust
I am currently starting with rust too. I'm coming from a C#/ASP.NET/Angular/SQL background. I really like the official documentation so far. https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/ch00-00-introduction.html

I also really like this quick introduction. https://fasterthanli.me/articles/a-half-hour-to-learn-rust

You won't "learn" rust by reading it but you get a pretty good picture of the basics in my opinion.

Maybe someone more experienced can rate these as i don't have comparisons yet.

the_cramer··on Exit, pursued by a bear
Especially in regards to Germany we would not have the current problem if we had decided or acted differently. Maybe pro-nuclear, maybe more building alternatives. For now you are right, we won't be able to activate anything nuclear till the winter.

The funny thing is, the same people arguing against nuclear power (with mostly ridiculously unscientific arguments against all statistics) will be the ones complaining about the situation and that politics should save us all.

I am very interested in the pro/contra nuclear discussion and the more i know about it, the more our current situation saddens me.

the_cramer··on Exit, pursued by a bear
Currently, Russia delivers less gas than expected, due to "technical issues". Repairs, that ought to be finished 21st of July. This is most likely not true and just a pressure point for Russia. If the repairs "fail" then Russia could switch of all of the gas. "Oops something broke"...

The german government is not deciding against the people in this case. (i believe... a german). German people are highly against nuclear and think that renewables could immediately solve our problems. This is just a lack of information and a ton of ignorance on the peoples side.

Apart from that our politicians are really "soft" in my eyes and i don't believe they will help the situation much in relation to Russia.

edit: Don't know about the rest of EU. That's why i state "my" countries perspective more.

the_cramer··on How to stop a robot vacuum from getting stuck on the laundry rack
So refreshing to see that others have this simple problem, too. Roombas really are like users. They will eventually find flaws and errors in your software, or, in this case, shoelaces and pieces of cloth lying on the ground.

Other issues with the roomba: - plant raisers with thin wooden feet. - wine rack with low base/feet - ikea chair with low U-shaped feet. Especially when the roomba tries to return to station

I also noticed that it has a hard time detecting dark/black surfaces. Probably it has to do with absorption of whatever kind of sensor wavelengths it uses.

the_cramer··on Study claims Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft work to derail data rules
You should absolutely get a ticket for accidently driving over the speed limit, as the company should too. Its about safety and awareness. If you are not paying attention to the road signs and/or your cars speed, who knows what else you are not aware of. Maybe a child crossing the road in front of you.
the_cramer··on Ask HN: Current state of coding .NET code on non-Windows machines?
Do you have one or two points why you like Rider more than VS? Honest curiosity. I never used Rider but i really like VS compared to other code editors (for other languages). To me it's the perfect match for anything .NET/C#.
