sufehmi··on CSS Zen Garden: A demonstration of what can be achieved through CSS-based design
The "View all designs" link (http://www.mezzoblue.com/zengarden/alldesigns/) is broken - anyone knows the correct one?

sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
....and that's why I wrote "Birmingham canals"

Have you tried it? They're truly a wonderful place for cyclists.

(well at least back in 2001, no idea how is it now)

sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
Definitely not me.
sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
But but it's all 100% organic !!
sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
"I noticed cyclists will often use the sidewalks to pass slower bikes"

Yup, THIS. Right. there.

sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
This is the first comment with an explanation that makes actual sense.

Thank you.

sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
Exactly.

Being new to the place, we tend to notice things that other people already took for granted.

sufehmi··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
Exactly.

Why didn't they stepped unknowingly into car's lane - but did so into bike's lane?

It's all in the design.

sufehmi··on What memory model should Rust use?
OTOH - TIL : LiveJournal.com still exists, even when giants such as Friendster, MySpace, Google Plus #cough have perished. Awesome.

Another thing I only noticed when I visited Amsterdam - it's scary for pedestrians.

I love cycling, been cycling for 25+ years, including commuting to my office via (beautiful) cycling path at Birmingham canals.

But when I visited Amsterdam, of course I don't have my bike there, so I went anywhere using Uber, and walking around - and that's when I noticed that:

It's really scary to be a pedestrian in Amsterdam.

In a lot of places, the cyclist path is on the same surface with the pedestrian path. Of course it's separated with lanes (read: paint job on the surface) - but we are on the same surface, next to another.

Several times I was almost hit by the cyclists, I'm pretty sure I was on my / pedestrian's path, but I almost got hit anyway. A lot of the cyclists are cycling in a very high speed.

That was a new feeling & experience for me, and I didn't like it.

I hope the situation will become better for the pedestrians.

sufehmi··on Facebook plans to change its name as part of company rebrand
Actually, no.

sufehmi··on Facebook thrives on criticism of “disinformation”
Indeed most of disinformation in Indonesia is via contents not facebook ads.

But there's still problem with Facebook - echo chamber algorithm, it traps people in their own bubble world

I once tried to like just funny posts. In just a week, nearly all contents in my timeline are jokes and funny posts

Now that's scary.

sufehmi··on Ask HN: How do I get fit and healthy as a software engineer?
Good news is that exercise will cause your body to produce feel-good hormones.

So as others already said - book time for yourself, every day, and do some exercise.

It will help with your burnout, and make you healthier at the same time.

sufehmi··on The ACLU, Prior to Covid, Denounced Mandates and Coercive Measures for Pandemics
"very recently, the same group warned of the grave dangers of the very mindset it is now pushing"

That is pure, unadulterated, bullshit.

The original report masterly managed to strike a balance between the public and private rights, between the need to effectively combat this pandemic and the civil rights.

If you can't be bothered to read the full report, feel free to skip directly to the "Recommendations"

Only a delusional person will claim that this report "Denounced Mandates and Coercive Measures to Fight Pandemics:

sufehmi··on Home ownership is the West’s biggest economic-policy mistake
Yup, COVID-19 shows me something that I have suspected all along - a LOT of parents are not comfortable to be with their OWN children.

Because schools are closed, parents have to be with their children all the time

A lot of them are really, really stressed out because of this.

Which begs the question - why the fuck did you bother to have kids then?

Children are blessings from heaven. If they can not see it that way, then they should free themselves from that and chose not to have kids instead

Mind blowing

sufehmi··on Facebook Helped the FBI Hack a Child Predator via 0-Day in Tails (2020)
The article shows a convo with the child predator via SMS, which of course reveals its number, which in turn makes it possible to track its location

I'm confused to why couldn't FBI busted the bastard by this?

sufehmi··on The absolute worst scenario happened
"extorted"

This is pure slander

The company can avoid this if they only care to maintain the documentation / wiki left behind by said person

When they failed to do even just basic proper operations, it's their own fault.

I'm a business owner and a consultant, and I too charge more for these kind of asshole clients, because of the extra stress.

But nowadays I just try to avoid them, it's just too damaging for your own sanity. Their kind of stupidity, self-entitlement, and ignorance is on a completely different level.

sufehmi··on Algorithms don't cause filter bubbles, people do

This guy is a massive idiot and he doesn't know it yet.

sufehmi··on Indonesia bans forced religious attire in schools
And of course no one would mention that the actual sharia law does not care about your sexual orientation

The one in Aceh actually contradict Muhammad's (pbuh) example

sufehmi··on MkLinux
It was even worse in Indonesia. Once I realize how far behind we were in general computer news & information, I literally mailed USD$ 100 to Ziff-Davis' office

That's how I got my monthly PC Magazine subscription (this was when they were the best magazine about PC)

Also good technical books were practically non-existent

I got my first Assembly and Norton's book from a bookstore specializing in bootleg copies

Only years later I began to be able to buy good books

Things are so much better now, thankfully

sufehmi··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
3 years ago, my friend, an Indian fact-checker, showed me a screenshot of a WhatsApp screen, showing warning from WhatsApp that a message contains a dangerous link

This (the warning) is only possible if WhatsApp can read your messages

I'm guessing that they read your message on the app. So their claim (end-to-end encryption) is indeed true and correct.

But their app can and indeed has been reading your messages, for the past, at least, 3 years

Which I personally don't mind, when it's done fully automatically (no humans involved) and only for this kind of uses (to warn users of dangers)

sufehmi··on System76 – Pangolin
This is absolutely absurd nowadays.

My friend have a reasonably old Thinkpad laptop, she ran out of battery during a very important meeting, and I was able to help her by plugging my powerbank

sufehmi··on VPN by Google One
THIS.

I can not believe how many people just blindly recommend VPN like some silver bullet.

Using untrustworthy VPN as a privacy solution is like jumping from the fire into the pavement 20 stories below.

Dang, just visited a mall with Muji shop in it yesterday.

I will come back later to buy some pens

Thanks for the recommendation.
