sufehmi··on Garnix (A Nix CI) is shutting down
All clouds / serverless will end up like this. It's a matter of "when", not "if"
sufehmi··on Anthropic takes legal action against OpenCode
this is actually the best explanation of this situation, why is it downvoted?
sufehmi··on MacBook Neo
After several days of usage, Activity Monitor will usually shows that "WindowServer" is using 6 GB of RAM.

Yeah, 8 GB RAM does not cut it anymore. At least until Apple start fixing the memory leaks in MacOS.

sufehmi··on My Impressions of the MacBook Pro M4
Hi thank you so much ! I live in the tropics and often works outdoor and THIS is a lifesaver !!

sufehmi··on Lenovo May Be Avoiding 'Windows Tax' via Cheaper Laptops with Preinstalled Linux
This is business as usual in Indonesia - even very expensive Dell computers came with FreeDOS instead of Windows.

An example = https://www.tokopedia.com/nescomputer/dell-poweredge-t440-xs...

We still don't know so much, yet we claim so much.

sufehmi··on People Behind “The Print Shop” (1985)
Hey, just want to say THANK YOU for empowering a lot of us - we created so many banners, flyers, etc for a lot of for-good activities.

When I first find out you can print a single desain over multiple pages (banners), my mind was blown. Me and my friends then went quite wild with it.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

sufehmi··on So you think you know box shadows?
Was confused because everything moved in 2 seconds per frame on M2 Firefox.

Switched to Chrome - suddenly everything is butter smooth.

Congrats on an article very well done!

sufehmi··on What happened to blogs
So many people missing the point then and now.

Blog was, is, the easiest way to showcase your skills and capabilities.

I'm unable to count how many times total strangers suddenly contacted me and proposes collaboration, projects, job, etc

That's why after 23 years, I'm still blogging.

sufehmi··on What I've learned about open source community over 30 years
"Maintain a Website" - this really means "publish" (your works)

Because even if you do tons of very good work - if you don't publish it, then it's as if you're doing nothing.

This is where a lot of non-profits fail.

A lot of them are doing very, very good work - but because they suck at documentation & publication ; then people doesn't know about it at all.

sufehmi··on Vigorous Exercise, Cognitive Decline, and High Blood Pressure
Public policies are designed to work on populations, massive number of people - not anecdotal evidences like these.

And taxing private transportation / providing incentives for public transportation does not only benefit our health, it also bring other benefits; global warming issues, dependency on fossil fuels, etc

sufehmi··on Study Finds 268% Higher Failure Rates for Agile Software Projects
"According to the study, putting a specification in place before development begins can result in a 50 percent increase in success, and making sure the requirements are accurate to the real-world problem can lead to a 57 percent increase"

Thank You Captain Obvious

So when the project spec is unclear? And/or changed during project? Abandon ship??

Or, utilize a methodology that's capable in adapting to mid-project changes....?

Hmm.... I wonder....

sufehmi··on The API database architecture – Stop writing HTTP-GET endpoints
Note: Exposing your database directly to the Internet / external access should always be considered a bad idea & and as a last resort.
sufehmi··on Why use ECC? (2015)
GPUs have ECC, it can be enabled anytime, see https://discourse.codinghorror.com/t/to-ecc-or-not-to-ecc/37...
sufehmi··on Why use ECC? (2015)
As soon as I worked with high-load servers in the 90s, it's already clear that ECC should be the default.

Intel's marketing ploy on ECC is very desctructive and have costed many parties a lot of wasted time money & resources to handle problems caused by non-ECC memory ; and Linux Torvalds is absolutely right in roasting them for this.

sufehmi··on How paid Wikipedia editors squeeze you dry
If you're willing to cause damage to a very useful resource like Wikipedia just to sell something - then you deserve to be scammed.
sufehmi··on The teen mental illness epidemic is international (2023)
This is called "anecdotal evidence"

I have similar problem too, but then I also people got distressed over social media as well.

The existence of our problem does not mean that other people's problems are invalid / does not exist.

sufehmi··on The laptop that won't die
Low screen resolution is the showstopper - nowadays everything will look weird, and unusable, in a 1366x768 screen.

It still looks good & comfortable to my eyes ; however all kinds of software just become unusable at that resolution.

Which is quite disapponting.

sufehmi··on Technique for 3D printing metals at the nanoscale reveals surprise benefit
"Technique for 3D printing metals at the nanoscale reveals surprise benefit" - I would be surprised if it does not.
sufehmi··on An Opinionated Yubikey Set-Up Guide
I was looking for a cheaper alternative than Yubikey etc - then I found token2.

Their FIDO U2F costs only 5 euro.

Now I can say to people I talked to that they no longer have any reason not to use security key.

sufehmi··on CoQ4 is a functional substitute for CoQ10 and can be targeted to mitochondria
One question - in your case, how long does it take for you to start noticing its (good or bad) effect?

I've suffered from Longcovid since last year, and this seems to be something safe that I can try, with a possibility of positive result.

sufehmi··on The deadly “dancing plague” of 1518
People are more cattle-like than they'd like to believe.

Once I realized this, the world makes more sense.

sufehmi··on Passwords Are Fine
"I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that the problem with passwords is password hygiene, not with the method itself"

Clearly this guy has never got his password sniffed before, or even heard about it.

It's always painful to see someone who doesn't understand something talking about it, and worse, badmouthing it.

And,

"Notice that all of these problems are solved by fairly simple password hygiene"

Clearly this guy has never heard about various fiascos of various password manager software.

=====

Passkey doesn't need you connected to the internet.

Google Auth too.

Actually weak password is fine, when you have 2FA. I have some accounts which has weak password, some even already in haveibeenpwned; but no problem for years because it got 2FA as well.

Password alone without 2FA is okay, as long you can ensure no malware/keylogger enter your system. Which is a risk.

Forcing your users to change their password routinely is bad policy, it motivates your users to use weak password and/or store it insecurely, and other unexpected behaviours.

SMS 2FS sucks because it can be intercepted and/or snooped - no, this is not just a theory, this happens rather routinely in my country.

Etc etc

sufehmi··on Ask HN: Did Anyone Else Here Simply Not Do Well at School?
(1) That's not all that I said,and (2) missing the point.
sufehmi··on Ask HN: Did Anyone Else Here Simply Not Do Well at School?
School (and Uni) are designed to train you to become academics.

So naturally, anyone aspiring to be other than that, will be screwed to various degree.

I'm a certified genius. A member of Mensa.

But I never do well in school.

I do train myself to have the following attitudes : grit, honesty, initiative (note: different than assertive), be a helpful (friendly) person.

People consider me to be a rather successful person. Personally I don't think I am yet.

I taught my children the same, and I said these to them:

"I would never demand good grades from you. I won't even mind you skipping school/uni classes.

I do however expect you to always try your best. And try to develop your network of friends."

sufehmi··on 27 years later and the Psion 3a is still wonderful (2020)
Don't

Mine is now have its hinge broken.

Also its battery is almost dead, have emailed Planet asking for replacement (and how much) - and have been ignored for WEEKS. Looking at online forums, some have been ignored for MONTHS.

Keyboard feels very sloppy. And some of them must be pressed very hard - while others register multiple clicks even when touched very lightly.

Forget about the camera - it sucks so bad compared to even a cheap chinese smartphone. Just use it to scan QR codes at most, and even that it have problems from time to time.

And so on, so on.
