stevecalifornia··on Why TCP needs 3 handshakes
Pilots also do a 3 handshake exchange when handing over control to the other pilot.

Pilot: "You have the plane." Co-Pilot: "I have the plane." Pilot: "You have the plane."

The third statement is the pilot acknowledging that the transfer of control has completed. Without it, the co-pilot doesn't positively know that the pilot knows that control has been handed over.

As an aside, Air France 447 was a crash where the co-pilot was pulling back on the stick without the captain knowing. The captain couldn't understand why his controls weren't having the intended effect. Both pilots were making inputs, unaware of each other.

stevecalifornia··on Controversial Windows Recall AI Search Tool Returns with Proof-of-Presence
I'm very excited for this feature and bought a Copilot+PC for this feature.

I spend so so much time looking for information I saw in the past...a document, a conversation, a website, etc. This will be a big time saver and have a ton of utility.

To those that are scared of it: don't use it. I can make my own choices.

stevecalifornia··on Half of Google's white-collar staff 'does no real work,' Silicon Valley VC says
How many people work at Google?

About 50%.

stevecalifornia··on Real-time map of every Starlink satellite in orbit
This can't be an accurate realt-time map. The satellites are travelling way, way too fast. This map shows a satellite travelling from LA to Denver in 10 seconds.

You can literally see the satellites at night and they do not traverse horizon to horizon 1/10th as fast as depicted here.

stevecalifornia··on Missing Titanic sub faced lawsuit over depths it could safely travel to
Does this thing have a tether to the surface or not? I would be blown away if it didn't have a tether, but that seems to be the case.
stevecalifornia··on The cost of being poor: Why it costs so much to be poor in America
As a landlord of single family homes, I have to look at the detailed credit history of potential tenants. Before I even get to that stage I let them know the income requirements, etc. so usually we are looking at the top 3 applicants out of the 30 that applied.

With almost no exception, the renters make horrible financial decisions that set them up to work until they die. The average credit report I see is about a 500 and it's filled with missed payments, loans sent to collections, etc. Then, right at the top, in the last two or three months will be new loans for expensive cars and jewelery. It's mindboggling and sad. Most of my tenants have a nicer car than me (I own a pretty vanilla $30k sedan).

The renters usually come just above the 3x income to rent ratio and they never fail to pay their rent. But I don't really ever forsee them owning a home if they continue to make luxury purchases that prevent them from saving. The loan industry really enables a life of debt.

stevecalifornia··on What are executive off-sites good for?
This site is basically Reddit now. Really stupid comments from people with no insight.
stevecalifornia··on Ask HN: Have you stopped reading most news?
I went dark for six months in 2019. I treated the news like Game of Thrones spoilers-- I worked really hard to stay un-informed. The result was that I was absolutely happier, more focused and a better father. I recommend such a sabbatical to anyone who will listen. Try it for 30 days.

Coincidentally, I just turned on my domain blocker again this evening (I use Freedom.to, it syncs all your devices on the ban-list to avoid unconsciously opening up news sites out of habit).

stevecalifornia··on Good riddance to long books
I recently wrote a science fiction novel that I intentionally kept short (50,000 words - 200 pages- readable in a weekend). When reading, I don't finish most of what I start because it takes 80-100 pages to get to the hook. I understand that there is a joy in reading a long novel that builds up a character, but most of the time these novels are just tedious. I couldn't finish the 2020 Hugo Award winner because for the first 50 pages it was the protagonist moving into an apartment, unpacking stuff and walking around in a city. It kills me.
stevecalifornia··on New asteroid strike images show impact 'a lot bigger than expected'
That's the thing, I'm certainly not the demographic the ad is targeting.
stevecalifornia··on New asteroid strike images show impact 'a lot bigger than expected'
This page shows like 15 copies of the same mildly NSFW ad. Surprised this is a thing on Spacedaily.
stevecalifornia··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
Install a scheduled host blocker and block all your time wasters until the hours of 10PM until midnight.

Don't be afraid to admit that the moment you feel a touch of boredom you reflexively type 'reddit'. Tools like 'Freedom.to' block these time sinks and you don't even realize how frequently you visit these sites until you get the block notification.

After a week or two your cured.

stevecalifornia··on Subaru, Kia shut off some car features rather than adhere to 'right to repair'
I have yet to see how this thread will go but I imagine there will be some population that sees this as a malicious attack on 'right to repair'. My take from behind the scenes on these kind of things is that this is likely 'until we have the tools and processes to handle the work stream originating from this one state in this one country, we should disable the feature'.
stevecalifornia··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
I am going to call this some kind of technical error. The episodes deleted are so mundane that it's impossible to imagine taking these down but keeping all kinds of horrible music that is explicitly violent, rapey and racist.
stevecalifornia··on San Francisco's homelessness is a humanitarian crisis
There are broadly two kinds of homeless: those who lost their job and are discreetly trying to get back on track... and those who choose this lifestyle and shit all over the place, make enormous amounts of trash, smoke meth in bookstore bathrooms, steal from stores and assault people.

All day long I see the second group all over town destroying stuff and causing mayhem that ends up hurting innocent bystanders.

Yet when the media talks about homelessness they only speak as if all homeless are in the first group-- down on their luck and needing a helping hand and if you feel anything other than deep guilt you are less than human.

The ruse is up: everyone has too many anecdotes of being assaulted, having to walk out into the street to go around heaps of garbage, watching people openly inject drugs on sidewalks in front of unwilling witnesses.

There are clearly two distinct things going on and they likely have two totally different solutions. If media and politicians keep communicating as if there is only one problem, despite what our ears and eyes tell us every single day, then this will continue to get worse and the outcome will likely be the same as the 'defund the police' movement-- a voter referendum that says 'enough of this nonsense'.

stevecalifornia··on Backblaze IPO
I wrote Backblaze and said "I would pay to ship you a drive so I don't have to upload 500GB over my consumer internet. That is my biggest pain point." and then the customer service rep replied that it wouldn't be a good business model to do that. Why is the customer service rep making these decisions? Just forward the email to your biz dev team.
stevecalifornia··on Facebook is an addiction treadmill most may never be able to quit
I sometimes feel alone when I go to Reddit and have the same disgusted feeling you do-- and it's because all the dissenting opinions are downvoted and deleted.

With that kind of moderation, how is there any other outcome other than a loud, obnoxious hive-mind?

It bothers me because perhaps the younger generation will grow up in Reddit thinking that this hive-mind is normal and healthy.

stevecalifornia··on A Soviet Prisoner's View on What's Important
"...No matter how abominable your condition may be, try not to blame anything or anybody: history, the state, superiors, race, parents, the phase of the moon, childhood, toilet training, etc… The moment that you place blame somewhere, you undermine your resolve to change anything; it could be argued even that that blame-thirsty finger oscillates as wildly as it does because the resolve was never great enough in the first place.

After all, a victim status is not without its sweetness. It commands compassion, confers distinction, and whole nations and continents bask in the murk of mental discounts advertised as the victim’s conscience — but try to resist it. However abundant and irrefutable is the evidence that you are on the losing side, negate it as long as you have your wits about you, as long as your lips can utter “No…”

On the whole, try to respect life not only for its amenities but for its hardships, too. They are a part of the game, and what’s good about a hardship is that it is not a deception."

This resonates with me-- it's something I have always held as a core belief. I made an appointment to be where I am today-- good or bad. The moment I blame my situation on someone or something I cede control of the situation.

stevecalifornia··on Of 55 students in my class at Columbia’s Film program, 4 made a career out of it
Govt funding of a student's degree in proportion to the need for that skillset. We need it.

China does something similar to this-- essentially preventing swaths of the population from getting useless degrees.

stevecalifornia··on Cornel West Releases Resignation Letter from Harvard
You are right, I didn't write out my intention clearly. People should bring life experiences like that to work-- probably shouldn't keep a scorecard though.
stevecalifornia··on Cornel West Releases Resignation Letter from Harvard
His resignation letter chastises the school for not giving enough attention to his mother's death-- he only got two condolences. Does this strike anyone else as a really strange thing to bring up a tally of condolences in a resignation letter?
stevecalifornia··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
There are many, many videos like this: https://youtu.be/arss9V3A1VA?t=44

Warning, there is nothing NSFW, but it's just sickening to watch.

stevecalifornia··on Multiple US Navy destroyers swarmed by mysterious 'drones' off California coast
I don't get why the UAVs need lights. They might not have been detected without them-- so it's like they were asking too be seen.

Also just an aside, I was on that cruise ship that was in the vicinity a month before this. I went out onto the deck (the bow) late at night. We were way out offshore near the military operating area. It was pitch black out there and creepy as fuck.

stevecalifornia··on How to deal with difficult people on software projects
This is a horrible website and you will likely experience diminished tenure if you follow it's advice.

First, there is a complete lack of empathy for the person being labelled. What are the motivations and constraints that led to this person acting this way? A key question and the foundation for building healthy productive relationships.

Second, the 'solutions' are horrible. "Go around the person" is terrible advice for anyone on a team. If you follow the advice from this website you will end up being the problem.

I would argue that this website is almost sociopathic-- completely ignoring the perspectives of anyone but the reader and suggesting damaging solutions and labels.

stevecalifornia··on S.F. pays $61k/year for one tent to shelter the homeless
Heard this third hand but fairly reliable: owners of a hotel had rooms used to house homeless in SF and they were destroyed and cost a tremendous amount to repair.
stevecalifornia··on Fry's Electronics is closing all stores
I went to a Fry's in San Jose (jungle themed I think) on a Saturday afternoon at 3PM and there were literally 7 cars in the parking lot. I went inside and there were few people and the shelves were loosely stocked with junk from China and random crap like towel warmers.

I hope to read the management post-mortem.

stevecalifornia··on Gyroplane Accidents 1985-2005
Well I have an oddly specific contribution to this thread: My first boss was absent all the time. He'd show up to the office and lock himself away, leave and then not come back for another 6 months. He hated software and computers and didn't want to be a part of the software product we were building-- which is self evidently strange.

He used to race experimental cars. He was in a horrific crash on one of those salt flats and his personality was permanently changed. He went from being pleasant to the person I knew him as-- cold, strange and reclusive.

Turns out he was coming in to the office just long enough to use Excel to run a calculation. He was designing a helicopter where the jet engines were on the tip of the rotors and you stood in a can above the whirling blades. We called it GarbageCopter.

Anyways, he eventually gave up and bought a gyrocopter. He flies that thing all day, every day. Just circling in the pattern at our airport at 1,000 feet and 20 knots.

He is very old and blind on one side. I have no idea how he got his health check. I am pretty sure he will be a statistic someday, but at least he's doing something he likes.

stevecalifornia··on The Enduring Myth of Stranger Danger
Of all the missing children, less than 1% is non-family abductions. [1]

I live in a safe suburb far from any major city and I let my 6 and 8 year old take themselves on a walk around the neighborhood when they check in with me first. Literally every time they go on a walk one or two adults stops and asks them where their parents are and sometimes the adult even calls us to warn us of the dangers of kidnapping.

When I mention that we let our kids walk themselves to my parents I get lectured like crazy about how people will steal our kids. I am totally confident someone will lecture me in this thread. The stats don't match the fear.

It's unreasonable and unhealthy to deny your children the experience of self-reliance and exploration.

stevecalifornia··on Robinhood blocks purchases of Gamespot, AMC
This is the motto for 2021 so far.
stevecalifornia··on Halt and Catch Fire Syllabus
I have watched all four seasons seven times.

This show is so good I don't recommend it to my friends because I'm not sure I could handle it if they didn't like it as much as myself.

If you haven't seen the show, watch season 1 episode 1. If you don't like it, this isn't your show. You don't have to invest 20 hours of your life 'to get to the good season'. It's all good right from the start.
