sterkekoffie··on Request to register business in Indigenous language denied by B.C. government
I earnestly can't think of anything more offensive you could say to an indigenous Canadian than "just anglocise a little more and move on".
sterkekoffie··on Data Visualization and the Modern Imagination
There are real-text headings above the button bank at the top and the images have the role="presentation" attribute, meaning they're meant to be ignored by assistive tech. What is there to address...
sterkekoffie··on Why are so many coders still using Vim and Emacs?
sed, perl? I don't know why you would ever need to load a 10 gig file to memory.
sterkekoffie··on President Trump’s Twitter accessed by security expert who guessed password
Or not: https://www.vice.com/en/article/epd4x7/twitter-trump-hack-ev...
sterkekoffie··on Darwin’s theory about atolls is ‘beautiful’ but wrong
The original piece does address this. The gist is that the volcanic plateau underlying the carbonate platform influenced the early morphology of the platform (duh) but that its influence became "muted" once the plateau was entirely underwater. Volcanic activity is unlikely to be related beyond that initial effect.
sterkekoffie··on Ransomwiz – Online ransomware simulation platform
That's a local configuration issue.
sterkekoffie··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
Yes, you get a warning that explicitly says "Data beyond 256 (IV) columns by 65,536 rows will not be saved."
sterkekoffie··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
Prison in the U.S. is traumatic and life-ruining by design and people who are imprisoned become victims themselves. Not only that, but a huge number of offenders have previously been the victim of a crime, or will be after they're released. The world is not made up of attackers and sufferers, it's made up of people. You can waste your time allocating empathy based on your own flawed moral calculus or you can just try to see people as individuals and treat them accordingly. Note that this could also mean treating people worse than the justice system did.

If the empathy-allocating thing appeals to you, you can think about it in terms of externalities. If you can prevent recidivism, you can proactively "help the victims" by preventing their victimization in the first place. What drives recidivism? Primarily, poverty, unemployment, social marginalization, untreated mental health issues. People with no options will act as if they don't have options.

sterkekoffie··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
People are acting like you shouldn't be allowed to quit your job because you don't like your coworkers?
sterkekoffie··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
If you search a given free software (provided it's popular enough) with "onsite training" you will find a plethora of companies that provide it.
sterkekoffie··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
>What tools you use following that are up to you

For most, they're up to your employer. If everyone I interview knows AutoCAD because they all learned AutoCAD in college, I'm probably going to purchase AutoCAD. Companies provide those steep discounts to students because they want to condition you, not because it's good PR. And it's such an effective strategy that you never even have to consider that other programs exist, let alone that they could be worth your time.

sterkekoffie··on You may finally use JSHint for evil
You're buying a wrench. The checkout clerk disappears in a cloud of sulfur and reappears as a demon. She tells you she will sell you the wrench, but if it's ever used for evil, your soul will be bound to her for eternity. She then holds up a virtually identical wrench and says "this one is fine, though, do whatever you want with it." You really just need it to tighten some fittings under your sink. Which wrench do you buy?
sterkekoffie··on Twilio: Someone broke into our AWS S3 silo, added 'non-malicious' code to JS SDK
I'm not sure who "you" and "they" are in this scenario so I apologize if this isn't what you're getting at: the failure -> fallback -> threat evaluation-> remediation process can be entirely automated except the evaluation part. I'm not a web developer so I don't know the incidence rate of using unstable builds in production and having to patch stable builds, so maybe having to manually evaluate threats in this way /would/ be annoying, but the actual devops seems pretty trivial.
sterkekoffie··on Twilio: Someone broke into our AWS S3 silo, added 'non-malicious' code to JS SDK
>If it was a serious bug then that could be a huge issue.

Regardless of the severity of the bug, the only-case scenario is that all the sites you have pulling from that CDN break until you recompute the hash. How annoying this is scales directly to how frequently your libraries have to release vital security bugfixes.

sterkekoffie··on Windows code-execution zeroday is under active exploit, Microsoft warns
Secure OS is an oxymoron.
sterkekoffie··on Pantone 448 C
I set all of my backgrounds and accents to brown (lighter and warmer than 448 C) and magenta. Now I'm wondering if something's wrong with me.
sterkekoffie··on Microsoft’s quest to go ‘carbon negative’ inspires $1B fund
A well-done rooftop solar installation in 2020 will last you more like 30 years. That $8,000 comes after the payback period, meaning you end up with a 60% ROI.
sterkekoffie··on Caffeine attenuates high-fat-high-sucrose lipogenesis and body fat accumulation
There are reasons to care about metabolism besides a desire to lose weight.
sterkekoffie··on Caffeine attenuates high-fat-high-sucrose lipogenesis and body fat accumulation
Metabolism is an incredibly complex process influenced by innumerable variables. "Calories in, calories out" is a good maxim for combating fad dieters...but it's not actually true.
sterkekoffie··on SoftBank Vision Fund Employees Depict a Culture of Recklessness
It's a material problem, not a moral problem. Workplaces with gender parity function better, as evidenced by the article about securities fraud linked by elliekelly that you ignored.
sterkekoffie··on SoftBank Vision Fund Employees Depict a Culture of Recklessness
The problem is the dearth of women, not the presence of men.
sterkekoffie··on A Week in the Life of a McDonald’s Cashier
In 2017, McDonald's had 235,000 employees and paid its shareholders $7.7 billion. Compelling argument, all right.
sterkekoffie··on Mist Showers: Sustainable Decadence?
Can anyone brighter than me tell me the more specific names of the "brass mist nozzles" and "6mm hose adapter"?
sterkekoffie··on Microsoft Comic Chat
Out of the loop, anyone know when/why Jerkcity became BoneQuest?
sterkekoffie··on Open Letter to the Linux Foundation
Putting Yarvin in the same clause as Donglegate is a little gauche...
sterkekoffie··on Lifting the lid on Japan’s bento boxes
The very first pull-quote is "Bento boxes are expressions of a mother’s love for her child".
sterkekoffie··on Some corals regrow after 'fatal' warming
It breaks down to form water and CO2...which are both greenhouse gases.
sterkekoffie··on Some corals regrow after 'fatal' warming
If you'd RTA you'd have answered your question. We've long had evidence for this type of recovery happening. The problem is that the evidence is from the Paleozoic fossil record. It's vanishingly unlikely that /no/ corals ever undertook this process in the past 300 million years but it's not typical behavior and it's extremely significant that it's been observed in modern corals.

We know that catastrophic climate change has occurred in the past. Climate scientists are not proposing this is new on a geological time scale. But it's new to us and to most extant species. We don't all have these tricks up our sleeves.

sterkekoffie··on No Radical Changes in GNU Project
Pretty sure she was saying that hand-wavey statements like "he's done bad things in the past" are libelous, not people talking about their experiences. Regardless: there's another option here, where you don't dislike or disbelieve anyone, including rms. Just keep that in mind.
sterkekoffie··on Ken Thompson's Unix Password
Then I think our only difference in opinion is whether making sexually aggressive statements about your coworkers is crossing a line or just "naughty."
