sprague··on FCC votes to restore net neutrality rules
A little-discussed consequence of this rule is that it opens the door for the FCC and others to monitor your internet traffic.
sprague··on Ray Kurzweil on Joe Rogan
Kurzweil predicts that, thanks to exponential progress, by 2025 we’ll have 100% renewable energy (and a grid to go with it) and then 2045 is the Singularity. AIs will be at human-level brain intelligence next year. We’ll be able to stop, and then reverse aging, within 5 years.

Kurzweil comes across as an old man, slow to respond to Rogan’s rapid-fire and well-informed questions.

sprague··on Humane AI Pin
Impressive demo, but then that's true of most "AI" demos. I wonder how it actually performs.
sprague··on 1893 Lancaster Watch Camera
I wonder what it used for film. And are there any sample images taken with the camera?

sprague··on Policies of US Companies Offering Direct-to-Consumer Laboratory Tests
"Direct-to-consumer (DTC) laboratory tests are increasingly available to consumers with minimal or no involvement from health care professionals". Why are tests bad but, say, medical books are okay? Or maybe these people would ban medical books too if they could?
sprague··on TI 84 GPT4All
Here's the Github repo: https://github.com/dontbanmeplz/ti84-gpt4all
sprague··on Gptzero: Efficient detection of AI generated text
I tested this on some text that I strongly suspect was plagiarized with a GPT-like bot. It thinks both texts are human: my original and the suspected AI-generated one. Judge for yourself: https://richardsprague.com/posts/2022/2022-11-30-plagarized-...
sprague··on Twitter engineer explains how it will break in the coming weeks
Two weeks since this piece was posted. I wonder if the anonymous engineer quoted is still at the company.
sprague··on TikTok data science shows looks are important for video success
Detailed breakdown of an attempt at rigorous analysis and verifying the hypothesis of TikTok actively (implicitly or explicitly) promoting lookism.
sprague··on Decentralized Science is poised to disrupt everything
I’m not a lawyer, but my understanding is that no, NFT and copyright are parallel systems. Owning one does not imply the other. But for legal purposes, an NFT is a good way to prove provenance in the event of a dispute over copyright.
sprague··on If you post this image on Twitter, you're immediately suspended for 12 hours
huh? I haven't tried it...is it somehow fooling a porn filter or something?
sprague··on Pediatric COVID19 Cases in Counties with and Without School Mask Requirements
Key conclusion: "observational studies of interventions with small to moderate effect sizes are prone to bias caused by selection and omitted variables."

Surprisingly few interventions are so good that you don't need fancy statistics to justify them. Really good treatments (e.g. antibiotics) are so effective as to be obvious to all.

sprague··on The Elondrop
Interesting idea, but what's to stop all those tokenholders from going elsewhere without Elon? Once you free up the ID space, what value is there anymore in Twitter?
sprague··on Guido van Rossum: Let Web3 die in a flaming ball of fire
The interesting thing about crypto to me is how there seems to be a deep divide among very smart people, some who think it's the greatest thing ever and some who think it's a fraud.

I can't remember when there's ever been such a Bigendian-scale dispute in technology before. Can you?

sprague··on Back to the Future of Twitter
Twitter "has the potential to be a new protocol for the Internet — the notifications and identity protocol; unlike every other protocol, though, this one would be owned by a private company."

You could build the ultimate DeFi/Sci/Anything on this. If Twitter does it, there's no particular reason to go blockchain, but if they did it would solve the identity problem in a big way.

sprague··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Weirdest tip of all: eat 2 TBS of a tasteless oil (e.g. avocado oil) every morning at 10am.

The theory is that obesity is cause by a misalignment between the body's sense of how much food it's eating (which it determines largely by smell and taste) and the actual number of calories consumed. High density, tasteless calories fool that system into thinking you're already full, so you won't want to eat more. Search for "Shangri La Diet" to learn more details.

sprague··on What does a real economist think of cryptocurrencies?
"I think of them as new kinds of computers, new kinds of legal systems, and new ways of achieving reliable decentralized consensus. So I think they’re most analogous to advances in computing rather than some kind of monetary event."
sprague··on Moderna's 2017 Pitch Deck to Investors

sprague··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
If you have consumer-grade microbiome test results, you may be interested in what I learned about CRC. Some of the bugs that are associated with it are surprisingly rare, and it would be interesting to see if you have any: https://psm.personalscience.com/caseStudyCancer.html
sprague··on Half of us don't know a single person infected with Covid
September 2020 survey of 500 registered voters in Washington State. (P. 47)
sprague··on 85% of Chinese international students say they don't have one American friend
That is so true, and good for you for reaching out. I'm sure those immigrants will remember those dinners as a highlight of the time they were in the US.
sprague··on 85% of Chinese international students say they don't have one American friend
This has definitely been my experience. Language and cultural differences make close friendships with US students difficult and International students are often forced to associate with one another instead. A real tragedy when many/most of these international students go back to their home countries.
sprague··on TwoMinutesHate
I propose this hashtag every time somebody shares a video of some apparently outrageous action by an otherwise obscure person, posted simply to gain righteous applause by others.
sprague··on T Mobile response to US wide outage
"This redundancy failed us and resulted in an overload situation that was then compounded by other factors" seems like those other factors may have been more important too.
sprague··on Update on T-Mobile Network Issues
"This is an IP traffic related issue that has created significant capacity issues in the network core throughout the day" Uh, what?
sprague··on 12-16 Years Younger Than My Chronological Age: What’s My Diet?
Most impressive to me is how he is able to track every single thing he eats, with a food scale no less.
sprague··on California’s new law bans schools from starting before 8am
Also, for a married couple raising a family, it's hard to beat a job that, by definition, coincides with the kids' schedule. If one spouse has a decent full-time job, the additional income from teaching is almost incidental compared to the flexibility of working the same hours and location as the kids.
sprague··on More than 300 teams competing for $1M AI prize from Medicare
With that kind of money, CMS should have expected lots of submissions, even though the application process itself was pretty involved and required a lot of work.
