Very cool, please do!
spectre3d··on Thingino: Open-Source Firmware for IP Cameras
I used Marius’ Portainer guides for both Frigate[1] and iSpy Agent DVR (not OSS)[2].

I haven’t been able to get Frigate to see the garden eufy cam yet but iSpy worked right away with the same credentials.

I’ll choose my next cameras based on the Thingino supported list. Thank you to everyone working on this project!

They were Nvidia failures due to a manufacturing defect. My 15” 2008 Nvidia 8600-equipped MBP was repaired out of warranty (for free) for this issue.

All MacBook Pros from late 2007 to 2010 used Nvidia GPUs, not AMD.

Search “nvidia 8600 fail” to read more.

Focusing on the number of “keys” is an attempt to deceive.

Yes, moving focus to the location bar and then copying the URL gives you the same result. It’s not the same number of steps as copying the URL without changing focus.

Ctrl-L, then while still holding Ctrl, hitting C is not the same number of steps as chording Ctrl-Shift and hitting C. Two steps vs one step.

That’s a good point. I’m looking for the same thing.

OT: for your old Mac mini with the non-selectable Bluetooth “add” button, maybe try Mouse Keys.

spectre3d··on Google begins requiring JavaScript for Google Search
Useful list, thank you! I much prefer surfing without JavaScript. If I need to enable it for something temporarily, that’s fine. I just don’t want to leave it enabled all the time.

With Google search’s new landing page for those without JavaScript enabled, even if you enable JavaScript and reload, it just gives you the same ‘fail’ page. No matter what you do at that point Google deletes your search string and you need to retype it.

Just changed my default search to DDG and I’ll be looking into Kagi.

spectre3d··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
My opinion is, of course, in the minority. I understand that Google will do their best to keep the status quo in the advertising industry.

>How would the content creators or news sites earn then?

“Creators” seem to do just fine with the patronage model.

> ads are built on tracking as untargeted ads pays [sic] significantly lower than targeted.

Not my problem. I am not required to prop up your failed business model.

spectre3d··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Me too, I produced a lot of work with it. Lingo was a gas.
spectre3d··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Fair enough. I don’t use the iPad version of FCP or Resolve, but I’ve paid for both Mac apps and have enjoyed free updates from Apple and Blackmagic for close to 10 years.
spectre3d··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
2 of the 3 threads you posted are specifically related to pixel art.

The first linked thread is by a person who is doing pixel art. “I'm working on pixel art (very small-resolution bitmaps)”

The second thread you linked is also by a person doing pixel art. “I work on pixel art a lot”

This doesn’t take away from the fact that there’s a blurring issue happening that Affinity don’t seem to be able/willing to solve as of yet, just making it clear that you linked to two threads by people doing small bitmapped pixel art, then denied they had anything to do with it.

spectre3d··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
Apple told us the first iPad supports up to 11 finger multitouch, so people were understandably curious and got creative.

spectre3d··on YouTube now flooding your ad-block with "fake" ads that slow the browser
Just like with songwriting, I’m going to keep creating and posting videos, whether or not there is any monetary compensation. People who do things for their own enjoyment will find a way to do it.

If it’s on a centralized site like bandcamp or YouTube/Vimeo, that’s fine. If not, I can host the files myself.

spectre3d··on Foobar2000
VLC has 5-6 audio visualizers built-in that you can make fullscreen.

Not sure about anything else being discussed (Audacious, etc) but im guessing there mist be visualizer plugins for foobar.

spectre3d··on Foobar2000
There was no store in iTunes when it was released in 2001, and those of us using SoundJam MP knew there would be no further updates so we started using it and enjoyed its bulk metadata editing and album art embedding capabilities, with an interface that was intuitive for managing playlists and music. And scriptable!

It wasn’t until two years later that the store was integrated as part of an update.

Although there was an (Carbon?) OS X version for a while, Winamp was Windows-only from what I knew, so my opinion of it was always coloured by having to use Windows to interact with it, although I used CrossOver on Mac and Mint as well.

spectre3d··on Ask HN: Vision Pro owners, are you still using it?
That would be great, my Q3 spends almost all of its time in SteamVR in a fantastic and free overlay called Desktop+.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1494460/Desktop/

Everything being more legible on the AVP would make it even better. However, it’s also controlling some Windows things that I don’t think would be permitted on macOS.

I don’t have one to be able to test Steam Link or anything similar.

spectre3d··on Roku update turns on hated motion-smoothing feature, with no off switch
For myself, I’ve never had a reason to put it online.

If you’re using the TV online, then yes, get updates, but if you never let it have network access then this isn’t a deep concern.

spectre3d··on Roku update turns on hated motion-smoothing feature, with no off switch
Interesting! I haven’t connected my smart LG to the net since it was new, and it handles everything I throw at it.

I prefer to use an external box as opposed to the built-in apps, to have a more responsive interface, to keep the TV as clean as possible, and to have control over choosing to update the TV or not.

What brand is the one you’re talking about?

spectre3d··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
As the sibling comment mentioned, you can customize the keyboard shortcut so you don’t lose alt-space.
spectre3d··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
You meant Microsoft's PowerToys Run, correct?

Spotlight is Mac-only and uses Command-Space by default.

spectre3d··on Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
A good alternative to AE, especially for simpler stuff, is Apple Motion. It works in real time, unlike AE.

I’ve chosen it over AE for all the animated titles I’ve worked on for the past 8 or so years and have had no issues.

Opening AE to update old projects is a chore, never enjoyable. Motion is actually fun to use. I paid once, and they’ve been updating it for free since 2011.

spectre3d··on Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
I have a lot of old AE projects I sometimes need to modify for clients, so I need AE for those.

Since I can create the same titles/animations in Apple Motion in a fraction of the time that they take to create in AE, I use that for all newer projects.

I used Hotline client a bunch, but ran my own servers on KDX and Carracho. Same client-server setup as Hotline.

It was great to peruse the music people had uploaded to my server and discover bands I didn’t know that way.

Not having any luck finding info about The Agency. Can you provide some?

spectre3d··on Napster sparked a file-sharing revolution 25 years ago
Guessing you’re taking about Hotline. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotline_Communications

I ran a Hotline server for a few months, but ran KDX and Carracho servers for years. Same client-server setup as Hotline. Great communities and interesting people.

spectre3d··on Turn Your iPhone into a Dumb Phone
>But this article doesn’t really get into the stuff that the OS has built-in to manage notification priority, it just tells you to turn it all off

“Apple fortunately makes it straightforward to manage your notifications via Settings > Notifications — you can customize your notification preferences per-app, and if you’re on iOS 15 or later, you can also schedule a notification summary.”

>Kind of crazy that a blog post on this subject doesn’t even mention the Screen Time feature.

“using the native iOS screen-time feature or more advanced apps like Opal and Jomo to regulate your usage of them.”

spectre3d··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
Thank you for Aerial! It’s wonderful. I haven’t had any issues with it on an M1 mini with 2-4 displays, one always in portrait orientation. (I use DisplayLink USB adapters for the extra ones)

I don’t have app/window placement restoration issues on my main High Sierra machine. When I got the M1 and was forced to use Big Sur and up I started using BetterTouchTool to save and restore window layouts, so I haven’t thought much about window placement since then.

Again, love Aerial and its fantastic customization options. Thank you for all your work on it.
