The IRA were actually murdering people in Northern Ireland, not just "shooting up the landscape", and as already pointed out "we" behaved worse, in addition we had a level of privacy invasion at NI borders and within NI borders the rest of the UK and Ireland have, even now, no experience of. You don't get a full pat down when you visit Marks & Spencer, you don't walk to school with a soldier looking at you down the barrel of a rifle.

I'm currently trying to buy a house in UK, I check each potential purchase for distance to cabinet and FTCC on the cabinet. In most cases not having a nearby cabinet (<2KM) has been the deciding factor in not putting an offer in on that house (typically in this area that means a speed of ~1MBps).

You've never read them then, as they all use real world examples. Don Norman's has 3 Mile Island for example.

The Golden Ratio is one ratio, there are many. Some more, some less, aesthetically pleasing. Fitt's Law is basically about the metrics of completing any action involving your hand and a target, say a button or a link.

Consider an HTML pag with no graphical embellishments beyond a white body colour and a dark gray text colour, the proportions and spacing allocated to each bit of content will decide if people find it beautiful or not, and the ease with which they can interact with buttons and links will decide if they find it usable.

True, though .uk is more correct (Great Britain doesn't include Northern Ireland) and is reserved by the United Kingdom in ISO 3166

Range inputs are one of those things that seem obvious but in practice aren't that useful, in the grand scheme of things.

Can I suggest changing the CSS units for fonts from points to pixels? That way HN will look the same on both Chrome and Firefox for me :)

On Chrome 10pt HN type is 12px on Firefox it's 13.3333px (Mac OS X).

It has a measure with ~10 words per line, which helps make reading easier.

If you're the UX designer who came up with the human hand, by all means, patent away.

If I were making changes to HN it would be to add a "Nuke From Orbit" button to posts.

&& in OS X seems to put the left side into history and works as I described, but it didn't work when I tried it in Ubuntu 10. $_ works in both.

I have tried both, the difference is only that !$ echos the expanded command, while $_ simply runs the expanded command; both create a directory and cd into it.

(I'm running OS X, FWIW)

FWIW if you use Bash shell you can also use history expansion to shorten the mkdir && cd line further (the line already includes tilde expansion):

  mkdir ~/www/example.com && cd !$

!$ is the last argument of the preceding command
