sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
My short term thing is this mathematical programming puzzel https://projecteuler.net/problem=160 from Project Euler where you need to calculate a very large factorial.

My live goal is to bring back more programming and design techniques that we as a society used to make the best ps1 and gameboy games and old school animations to the way we are currently developing games. (Any tips and advice how i could help improve the game development industry is welcome. Next year I will be doing my masters so i'm also still looking for a subject for that. The last couple of months I have been experimenting with water color effects in openGL, so I'm looking for something like that)

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Castle Game Engine: Cross-platform 3D and 2D game engine
This reminds me to libgdx. The first time I saw libgdx my first thought was that it was dead but after making some small games with it I discovered that the small community is very active and was really trying to grow and help each other. It was really nice never the less it was very small. So I will keep an eye out on this project. Maybe its a good option to do next ludum dare with.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: Thoughts on teachyourselfcs.com?
It is a bit like this guide on how to become a game programmer https://github.com/miloyip/game-programmer It is a really good guide, and everything is thought out nicely but many people argue on both guides that it is too much stuff to learn. https://github.com/miloyip/game-programmer/issues/54 the answer that miloyip gave to the question that it may be to much sums it up for me. These guides contain to much if you want to be a simple programmer and get a job. But if you want to be one of the best in the industry you are going to need read and study all the parts.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: Is there a community or service where you can form study groups?
Here in the Netherlands there are a lot of different small community's. Some are organized by the universities and others can be found on https://www.meetup.com
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Kongregate closed to new games, shutting down forums and chat
It feels sort of sad to see this website go. It still reminds me of the kingdom rush games I played a few years ago.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: Best Video Call Solution for Elderly
My grandmother has an Ipad and an IPhone. We sometimes video call her on here phone using whatsapp. But this works around 50% of the time correctly and the other times we just call using a regular land line phone. She uses the Ipad only as a image viewer. We showed her multiple times how to google something but that is just to difficult for her. But she understands how to watch the photo's we put on the device, and she really likes to watch the old photo's of all our vacations together. So my recommendation would be use something that your grandmother is already comfortable with and start thinking from there. Introducing something new can be hard for her even if it is simpeler.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Video Games Are the Future of Education
While yes the game industrie will change some very small parts of education, my beleef is that it will not change anything big. Most of the time the games are already there but it is just not used because of many different problems.

I think that there are some small field that will be changed to games. For example I think there will be more good typing games like Epistory typing chronicles used in education. And some simple games for counting and learning a language. But this does not mean it changes the future of education.

I'm a Game Developer my self, for 4 years now, and most of the applied games and VR companies out there are just a hype to me. But I firmly beleef that platforms like EDX and Khan Academy and others will become bigger and bigger. Some schools may introduce a few classes or years with this model and they may flip the classroom. So in other words watch video's at home do your homework at school. And yes the simplest of simplest excesses on these platforms may become little games. But i'm interested to hear from all of you how you think games may be used or are currently used in education after the hype.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on A Guy Named Craig May Soon Have Control over a Large Swath of Utah
Well there is probably more to the story then just this. For example there are places in France where you can buy a house and a small piece of land for 1 euro. While this may sound strange the reason the government does this is because those houses where left abandoned. So when you buy it you sign a contract with special rules that say that you need to refurbish it or rebuild it within a few years.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on New Lego Mindstorms Robot Inventor
The scratch and python support are very welcome additions. my father still has the EV2 laying around here in the house even tho no one has played with it in the past 2 years.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: A way to adblock “we're using cookies” popups?
Most cookie popups are using javascript so when one is popping up i use the chrome extension "Quick Javascript Switcher" to toggle the Javascript off. This does not always work but it works in most cases.

I tried external list for Ublock as well. They say they will remove those things but they sometimes break things. Video's or slideshows for example did not seam to work when Ublock removed the cookie pup-ups.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Building a Search Engine for Programmers
Some information is very hard to find. So on my local machine i have many books about c and c++ I translate those using what shell command to readable text so that i can search it. So maybe you can help with the trend that some programmer seam to notice that certain information is disparaging.

So a combination of easy search of the wayback machine or a search in all online books.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on OpenAI API
very interesting blog, unfortunately it is just a sort of beta. It would be nice if they would also show what it could do precisely.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Dead Smurf Software
It would be nice if the title is a bit more descriptive of what the website and article are about.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
When you are programming in some lesser known graphics frameworks like libgdx or when you are using OpenGl then the special Reddit subpages are more active than stackoverflow. For example I implemented a framebuffer in OpenGL wrong a few weeks ago but the output then is just a black screen. Some redditor mentioned that specific thing in a comment on /r/OpenGL
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Shan, Shui: Procedurally generated Chinese landscape painting
yhea i was also interested to sea how he did the outlining effect. I made something tile this once in OpenGL. But that took a lot of code to create. So yhea magic code with many magic numbers.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
Yhea this is nice but this simply does not work on all websites. The edge between working and browsing the web can be very thin on some websites. For Facebook it is easy just block it completely but reddit and youtube are difficult so what I do is that I use a plugin called stayfocused it allows you to set a amount of time (for me 30 min) that you are allowed per day to be on the websites you listed. On my second browser I place no restrictions like that but use ublock origin to block everyting untill it is broken. So for example i remove the recommendations from youtube and it's search bar. On reddit I remove the list view so only a single post shows correctly. For me this works way better because the rules are fair and that makes sure you do not just remove the entries from your host file for example just a few days after you entered them.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Fake SpaceX YouTube channel with 36k live viewers scams people out of money
They hacked a large food channel that had 133k+ subs. When you go to the cumunity tab you can still see some of the original stuff still being there. (in case it gets removed to https://imgur.com/72nofl0.png)
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Norway Scientist Claims Report Proves Coronavirus Was Lab-Made
where is the proof, none of the researches that are mentioned are publicly available on the internet.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on [dead]
I am from the Netherlands and have seen this news on other small dutch news channels but I do not understand why this is on "HackerNews". @blue_devil could you elaborate why you posted this?

Yes the fact that mink can get the virus and that they can transmit it to humans is news worthy but even on the dutch national television this news was only mentioned very shortly.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on What computer and software is used by the Falcon 9? (2015)
Depending on the platforms and customers C and Java are also heavily used next to Ada. The history behind Ada is mostly that the military required components to be made for that language. That requirement shifted around 10 years ago to a preference.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on What Do You Do with a Stolen van Gogh?
When this article was first posted on Hackernews the title was different. Why are the titles getting changed?

It is still a clickbait title so i don't understand why the change was done in the first place.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Coronavirus will end the golden age for college towns
Side Note: Can we all appreciated that this website requires 112 of its 349 requests to load javascript from 47 different domains.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Ask HN: Is there a search engine which excludes the world's biggest websites?
I personally use Google Chrome with the duckduckgo search engine. Duckduckgo is not perfect, very in depth searches (such as gameboy advance memory layout only return junk, while google knows you are searching for a nich) but on your average search it is as good as google, somethimes better because it is more factual and will promote less webstores. When it does not give me what im looking for I can add !g anywhere in the question and the same search is done using google.

Then I use Violentmonkey an open source js/css injector to inject this user script: https://greasyfork.org/nl/scripts/1682-google-hit-hider-by-d... This will block specific domains for you in google, yahoo, duckduckgo etc. I use this to block domains like Quora, sourceforge, cnet and softonic.

The nice thing about this script is that you can permaban domain you know are junk and they will completely be removed or you can ban a domain like commercial websites. When you ban something it is not removed from google or duckduckgo but it only shows the title in light gray, Im currently experimenting with this on some mayor webstores so I can not really say if this may help you but It can be a good start.

(edit) I saw some people say why this was not possible before. Google allowed you to block domains and website a few years ago, but they removed this feature. Duckduckgo never allowed you to do that because that would mean that you will have a cookie that remembers your preferences and that is against there principles.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Most detailed ever photograph of The Night Watch goes online
Around the time that "nacht wacht" has bean pained nearly nobody in the Netherlands spoke English so that ha probably nothing to do with it.
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Most detailed ever photograph of The Night Watch goes online
English is a required second language here in the Netherlands. Like 80% here can speak it. It is so popular that many thing are English on default here now. Nearly all our radio music is English, university classes are English, Public Transport switches from dutch and English when it gets close to the bigger city's like Amsterdam or Rotterdam.

So if you ask a random Dutch person what kind of music he likes it is on default English other wise he will tell you specific. For the few words that we still use the dutch words to foreigners we have the opposite. We like to use the dutch word and don't translate it because it is just be a bit strange.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Daily standups should be async
wow some people sad that cadence looks like slack. But I just discovered it is really a 1 on 1 look a like. DAMN
sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Podcasts are my new Wikipedia
Podcasts are nice but for me definitively not comparable to Wikipedia for how I use them at least.

Podcasts: bring people of knowledge to talk about subjects.

Wikipedia: Brings the end result of all the talking to one written place.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
In the Nederlands multiple companies have bocome very big by using this trick. Some companies where doing this for some simple SEO improvements. The first site that used this trick to my knowledge was a website called CoolBlue 4 to 5 years ago (a Amazon like that only sells tech) For every category on there site they would claim a new domain name. So they would have ssdstore.nl monotorcenter.nl etc... once this happend many other sites followed. but this time the evil route.

A dutch Uber eats like company called "Thuisbezorged" made there signup price really cheap. like 2% of a restaurants income they made on the site was payed for using the platform. you get a personal website with a menu but after a while they started to push this really hard, buying automated domain names that roughly look like the name. And they started to spend google adsence for you sometimes without your knowing. restaurants now pay 30% of what they earn on the website to the platform and there are special rules that prohibit them from doing special offers to lure people to there own site.

So it sound like this stuff has already bean going on in the past 5 years, atleast here in the Netherlands it has.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
A friend of me added support for sending Giphy animations to a school project 2 years ago. He finished that in 2 or 3 hours. The API is basically give us 1 word and we give you givs / jif's / jivs / gif's idk. I atleast I understand why developers want to use it.

For users it can be useless because they do not seam to understand multiple words and they do not have localized memes, so they for example don't understand dutch words and they don't have dutch memes.

sneeuwpopsneeuw··on Most detailed ever photograph of The Night Watch goes online
As a dutch person it feels terrible to see the name of the art work translated to English. The dutch know this art work as the "nacht wacht".

The tech behind this all is very impressive non the less.
