smnrchrds··on Central African Republic Adopts Bitcoin as Legal Tender
> Any idea how that plays out when trying to change bags of coins at a bank?

I am not sure. I know they accept rolled coins for deposit at least from business customers. But I don't know what is the minimum legally required service level vis-à-vis coins and what is the customary service level banks actual offer right now. I remember TD having coin deposit machines that were free for TD customers to use but deducted a fee from non-customers, but they discontinued the service a couple of years ago. These days most people use third-party machines like this, which deduct a fee: https://www.coinstar.ca/

smnrchrds··on Central African Republic Adopts Bitcoin as Legal Tender
It depends on the country. In Canada, there is a limit on the quantity of coins, above which they are not legal tender.

(2) A tender of payment in coins referred to in subsection (1) is a legal tender for no more than the following amounts for the following denominations of coins:

    (a) forty dollars if the denomination is two dollars or greater but does not exceed ten dollars;

    (b) twenty-five dollars if the denomination is one dollar;

    (c) ten dollars if the denomination is ten cents or greater but less than one dollar;

    (d) five dollars if the denomination is five cents; and

    (e) twenty-five cents if the denomination is one cent.*

They are ridiculous. Nonetheless, they are legal obligations.
smnrchrds··on I want to give Oracle money but I can't
Considering how many people on the internet talk about using these cards for evading contractual obligations (e.g. cancelling the card instead of going through the contract cancellation process and paying the termination fee, if any), it's surprising their acceptance has lasted as long as it has.

Of course not. You cannot make lemonade with cheese.
smnrchrds··on I liked the idea of carbon offsets until I tried to explain it
Canada's "carbon pricing" (the government tries to avoid the word "tax" due to its negative connotations) is designed to be almost revenue-neutral to avoid this exact problem. 90% of the money is rebated directly to the people. The other 10% is used to fund green projects.

The companies can also try to do creative things through bankruptcy courts to avoid any negative consequences, like Johnson & Johnson is doing right now:

> J&J, which also makes products such as Tylenol and Band-Aid, assigned legal liability for the complaints to the spinoff company, which immediately filed for bankruptcy — a maneuver dubbed the "Texas two-step."

smnrchrds··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught me anything about science, it's that if you do a "meta-analysis" without reading each paper carefully and critically, you can end up proving anything regardless of its veracity. You cannot replace domain-expert scientists spending huge amounts of time painstakingly going over every detail of many papers to weed out mistakes and fraud in order to write a meta-analysis, with a computer program. Well, at least not until we figure out AGI. Until then, it would be irresponsible to rely on such a program for any clinical decisions.

smnrchrds··on Inflation is a disease (1978) [video]
From the video:

"In the famous case of Chile with Mr. Allende in power, he produced an inflation which was one of the major factors that caused the economic catastrophe that led to the replacement of his government by a military dictatorship."

It seems like Friedman in myopically focusing on economics of Chile, while the real reason for the coup was something entirely different. The real lesson here is not to take history lessons from economists.

That is strange. I have a different model (KD65X80J), but it seems to have all the same options and software. Yet, even though I chose Basic TV instead of Android TV, the internet connection page did not have the option to skip. It might be a bug, as you suggest.
smnrchrds··on Serious flaws in the way Samsung phones encrypt key material in TrustZone
I was trying to avoid it. I am tech savvy. I could not find a workaround. There was no way, at least none I could find despite my efforts, to skip the screen requiring you to connect without connecting.
smnrchrds··on Serious flaws in the way Samsung phones encrypt key material in TrustZone
My new Sony TV wouldn't allow me to do anything without connecting it to the internet during initial setup. I just wanted to use it as a dumb screen to show HDMI signal. But even that wouldn't work without initially connecting it to the internet. I haven't connected it to the internet since and so far it hasn't stopped working, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it does as some point and forces me to reconnect and update it.

smnrchrds··on Official Response: Request to Freeze Canadian Edge Users’ Accounts
It wouldn't have made a difference if the Emergencies Act was not invoked. There is a court order to freeze assets which does not rely on the Act, just existing laws. Even without the act and by the order of the judiciary, the funds would have been frozen.

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-judge-orders-up-to-20-mil...

smnrchrds··on Official Response: Request to Freeze Canadian Edge Users’ Accounts
As far as I know, the law does not demand asset seizure, but freezing. And the frozen accounts will be unfrozen when the emergency order expires or is lifted. The goal is to prevent the use of assets right now to finance blockades, not to deprive people of their property forever.
