sker··on ASP.NET MVC, Web API, Razor and Open Source
> if you have light needs, or can easily restart the service on a regular basis, you may find it usable. But I'd definitely avoid deploying an MVC 3 app

Can you further elaborate on that one? Because that's exactly what I would like to do.

sker··on Alex Payne, a Twitter engineer, is shutting down his personal blog
That's what I usually do, but this time is different. This marks the end of HN as I knew it (for me anyway), and I felt the need to express how I feel about it. You don't just lose something you cherish and stay quiet, that's a very difficult thing to do. You won't be hearing this sort of complaints from me anymore.
sker··on Alex Payne, a Twitter engineer, is shutting down his personal blog
I can't believe this is on the front page and at number 2. Hacker News has officially jumped the shark for me. Yes, down vote me all you want.
sker··on Reddit: IAmA grad student who has tried nearly every "study"/"smart" drug
Because the bible says that you cannot take anything that alters your behavior or your body, something like that, and that has been inherited through centuries even if it's not cited as the main reason, but it is the source of the war on drugs.

Millennia old beliefs are the source of many current traditions held by society (specially drugs and sex related). I would love for someone to prove me wrong or at least state otherwise.

sker··on “You’re one simple step from…” Don’t sweat it Silverlight, I was just leaving
Another geek complaining about non-standard plug-ins. I really wish HN had categories so I could filter out repetitive rants.

If the author didn't install Silverlight and watched the video he wanted, that is pure ideology borderline religion and I can't feel any sympathy for him.

Sorry but I'm not a militant ideologist. I'm all about pragmatism and net value. If I have to install a non-intrusive plugin in order to watch a video, so be it.

sker··on Video: Notion Ink Adam, iPad alternative
The camera is one of those things that makes you say "why didn't I think of that first."

I was kinda allergic to all the tablet hype that is surrounding the tech scene lately, but this really makes me consider one. I want one, actually.

sker··on Automatically followed by abusive ex-husband (and his friends) on Google Buzz
I'm not sure what the problem is either. I also have complete control over my privacy settings, but it seems you can't say that in this particular topic because the army of group-thinkers will down-vote you (read: censor your comment) to oblivion.

We can't have two-sided conversations in HN anymore. Either you bash Buzz/Google or get the hell out of this thread.

sker··on Automatically followed by abusive ex-husband (and his friends) on Google Buzz
Why is he being down-voted? (-3 at the moment)

Oh right, "we don't like his comment, let's get rid of it." Jesus, people, behave.

He's making his case based on his knowledge of the situation and he's doing so in an educated manner.

Me, personally, I'm in his same situation. I can't understand how people got automatically added to that Buzz thing. The link appeared in my Gmail account and I never clicked it, NEVER. I just turned it off when I learned how.

sker··on Facebook makes HipHop for PHP open source
PHP is sane?
sker··on Steve Yegge's predictions from 2004
I don't think he offended Yegge in any way. It's a valid point to make when someone goes to make inaccurate predictions: you have to take that into consideration for future articles. But well, this is Hacker News these days.
sker··on Steve Yegge's predictions from 2004
I think he nailed it with prediction #7. Many of you are saying he was late because the iPhone was released in 2007. Well, the iPhone SDK wasn't released until 2008 and the industry didn't step up to the game until 2009 when a bunch of Android handsets started to come out.

I do think he was wrong on most of the others, though.

sker··on The Apple Tablet Is Here, And It's Called the iPad
To be fair, Apple didn't promise much. The lunatic media did.
sker··on Live from the Apple 'latest creation' event
The engadget live feed is pathetic. They're saying "Wow" to any regular feature that doesn't really have anything impressive. What is their agenda here?
sker··on Googlephone No Match for Kafkaesque Carriers
Americans complain just too much about their mobile carriers. You guys need to come to peace with the fact that you are below East Asia and Western Europe in mobile services and internet speeds.

You are still better positioned than 80% of the world, which includes Latin America, Africa, West Asia, Middle East and some other countries. You just can't have everything. sigh

sker··on Record police with phone camera in Boston, get arrested
When I was reading this I was wondering how is this Hacker News material. This is the kind of thing I expect to find on the Reddit frontpage.
sker··on Ask HN: Are we too lenient on Google and Apple?
Not only that, but anything released by Apple or Google is omg awesome and fantastic, and anything released by Microsoft is another me-too product, no matter how innovative it actually is.
sker··on Microsoft about to unveil their own tablet
The Zune is not an indication of "how well they'll stack up," because by the time they released the Zune, Apple had already sold about 100 million iPods.

This time they're both starting from zero, so it'll be very interesting to see who gains more market fighting on equal ground. (Perhaps the first time we see them in this situation?)

sker··on The Apple Tablet
Yes, I understand your point and his point. But in some parts he talks as if we were flooded by one-purpose devices like Amazon's kindle, and Apple was going to be our savior by introducing a general-purpose tablet. And that's not the case, general-purpose tablets have been the norm for most of the decade.

Honestly, you and I both reached the same conclusion: Apple's tablet will be better thanks to Apple's great execution. I just don't understand why the article gets son many up-votes. We should expect those results from Apple based on what they've done with their other products.

sker··on The Apple Tablet
I think the author's writing skills are top-notch. The article was entertaining to read from the beginning to the end and he looks like a smart guy with great ideas.

That said, I don't think his analysis is that great in this particular article, that's why I quoted the word analysis in my original post. Like I said, this feels like pure speculation backed by intuition on the author's part. His analysis doesn't use any sort of sales numbers or statistics to show where the market is heading and why Apply would take certain decisions.

sker··on The Apple Tablet
As far as I can remember, the industry's response to the iPhone was very favorable. They had basically sold thousands of units before they even announced the product. People were asking for the iPhone long before it was confirmed.

The only ones in denial were competitors. Users and bloggers loved it since day one, and by day one I mean the day Apple announced it, not the day Apple released it.

sker··on The Apple Tablet
I agree with that, but number one article for most of the day? It seems a bit exaggerated to me. This is macrumors material, in my opinion.
sker··on The Apple Tablet
Sorry for the meta-comment but why does this article has so many votes?

I read the whole thing and it's nothing more than pure speculation and "analisys." What I took from it is that The Apple Tablet will be a full working device like the many tablets we've seen since the beginning of the decade.

Is the author someone famous in the Valley or something?

sker··on My latest flash game, Robokill 2
Man.. I pressed Menu and then Main menu and it took me out of the game. It didn't even ask me if I wanted to live. I was about to finish level 4, now I have to restart level 4. Great game but that really killed the mood.
sker··on Researchers Create Gold Aluminum, Black Platinum, Blue Silver
This is dated February 1st, 2008. Shouldn't we be seeing applications of this by now?
sker··on The official term for the smell after it rains
According to the wikipedia spanish article for Petrichor, they haven't been able to synthesize the smell due to its complex composition of more than 50 substances.
sker··on Former Microsoft evangelist Don Dodge on Google vs. Microsoft
Microsoft: mainly the XBox division seems to still be doing this.

Also, the developer division: Generics, LINQ, F#. They all came from Microsoft Research.

sker··on How the United States Lost the Naval War of 2015
Keep in mind that US defense contrctors are probably the most expensive in the world. How much does a Lockheed Martin engineer makes versus a Chinese contractor engineer?

The US spending 40-50% of the world's defense budget doesn't say much other than the fact that a lot of people are getting very rich in America. Don't get me wrong, they are still far ahead from everyone else, but I don't think that's a valid metric unless you adjust for purchasing power.

sker··on Google Chrome OS will have no native apps, data will be stored in the cloud.
I don't think a product X is better than a product Y just because it's open. That doesn't work for me.
sker··on Hivelogic - Top Programming Fonts
I was a Consolas guy until I discovered Bitstream Vera Sans Mono. I find it more readable, you might want to check it out.
